‘Sindoor Van' to celebrate success of armed forces and military operation

Plantation of these forests will be inaugurated on Aug 15 in a state-level programme organised in Lucknow.
"These forests will be a part of Shaurya Van, which will be raised in every district on Aug 15 to mark the valour of the Indian defence forces," a forest department official said, adding that villages of martyrs will be the preferred locations for plantation. After exceeding the plantation target of 37 crore saplings by planting 37.21 crore saplings in 12 hours on July 9, the govt has started raising thematic forests in districts, as was planned under Plantation 2025.
Planting of Eklavya Van was launched by the forest department in a state-level programme in Pilibhit on July 19 and that of Oxy Van at Bareilly, a day later. Each of these plantations will be done on at least a hectare of land in every district during monsoon. Eklavya Van is UP's tribute to the revolutionary tribal icon, Birsa Munda, whose 150th birth anniversary is being celebrated as Janjatiya Gaurav Varsha by the central govt.

Oxy Van will be developed as green lungs in cities. Every municipal corporation and nagar palika will have one such forest.
Among other special forests that will be raised this year is Gopal Van. Its plantation will start from Mathura on July 27. Every 'gaushala' will have this forest, comprising fodder and shade-yielding species of trees.
Inaugural plantation of Atal Van in Agra will begin from July 30, celebrating the birth centenary of Bharat Ratna and former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee. In an event at Bateshwar Mahadev temple in Vajpayee's ancestral village, Bateshwar in Agra, every divisional forest officer (DFO) will get a banyan sapling to plant in Atal Van in their districts.
Inaugural plantation of Ekta Van will follow on July 31 to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Home department will be extensively involved in planting Ekta Van as Sardar Patel was the first home minister of independent India.
The Ek Ped Guru Ke Naam event on Sept 5 will mark the culmination of plantation drive.

Mumbai records surge in snake sightings Cobras, vipers among 122 snakes rescued in two monsoon months
In the first two months of monsoon this year, Mumbai recorded a surge in snake sightings with as many 122 snakes being rescued from various residential and commercial areas in Mumbai between June 1 and July 25. The snakes are being rescued jointly by the state forest department and Resqink Association of Wildlife Welfare (RAWW) following SOS calls. Data also shows that 266 snakes were rescued this year between January 1 and July 25. Out of the total snakes rescued, 86 are Indian rat snakes, which is the most common non-venomous snake in India, while 49 are spectacled cobra which is the most common venomous snake in the country. Speaking to the Indian Express, Pawan Sharma, honorary wildlife warden and founder of RAWW, said that both these species of snakes mostly feed on rodents. He also said that most of the sightings were in drains and garbage bins. Considering both housing societies and commercial zones have open garbage bins and open drainages, it becomes easy for the reptiles to find a place for hiding. 'In a city like Mumbai, these snakes are almost everywhere right from drainages in residential and commercial spaces to open spaces and public gardens. Our inability to control edible waste and rodent population leads to natural predators like rat snakes and cobras coming into action. Now with non-stop supply of prey and lack of natural predators like mongoose, raptors, etc, the snake population is flourishing,' Sharma said. Some other species that are rescued by the authorities include 26 Indian rock pythons, 25 Russel's vipers, 21 chequered keelbacks and 16 long nosed whip snakes. However, the number of snake rescue operations that were recorded this year is marginally low compared to the past five years. According to the data shared by RAWW, 153 snakes were rescued between June 1 and July 25, last year, while in 2023, 123 snakes were rescued during this same period, a total of 211 snakes were rescued during this period in 2022, 189 in 2021 and 208 in 2020. However, Sharma also said that the drop in numbers doesn't indicate that the snake population is falling in Mumbai. 'Every distress call that is reported may not lead to a successful rescue. Many times snakes escape before our rescue teams reach the spot. These snakes are used to being within the urban habitat and people are usually willing to coexist with snakes, especially when they know that they are non-venomous in nature,' Sharma added. After the snakes are rescued, they are released in their natural habitat after medical assessment. In many cases, rescued eggs are also artificially incubated to ensure the hatchlings are not lost. In June this year, 22 eggs that were rescued along with a rock python were successfully hatched artificially, following which the hatchlings were released in their natural habitat.

Delhi to host mock emergency drill on August 1; quake, chemical disaster simulations to be held
The national capital is set to host a mock drill aimed at bolstering emergency response capabilities for major calamities such as earthquakes and chemical disasters, officials said on Sunday. The field-level drill will mark the culmination of a multi-agency ' Exercise Suraksha Chakra ' designed to enhance emergency response coordination in the National Capital Region covering 18 districts across Delhi , Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, they said. This is a crucial step towards building a resilient city capable of handling major disasters, an advisory from DDMA said. It urged citizens to cooperate fully and not to panic during the drill. It is a planned exercise and not a real emergency, it added. Live Events As part of the exercise, residents may witness increased movement of emergency vehicles including ambulances, fire tenders, police vans, and army trucks. Sirens and public address systems may be used to signal the start of the drill. Temporary facilities like incident command posts, staging areas, relief camps, and medical aid posts will also be established, the advisory said. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), armed forces, civil defence, Delhi Police and other stakeholders will carry out simulated rescue operations, casualty evacuations, and medical assistance to mock victims, the advisory added. The exercise will begin on July 29 with a high-level symposium on disaster risk and strategic preparedness. A tabletop exercise (TTEx) will be conducted on July 30 to allow disaster managers to test their response plans in a controlled environment. The full-scale mock drill on August 1 will be the final phase, putting planning into action on the ground. Apart from Delhi's 11 revenue districts, the exercise will cover Gurugram, Faridabad, Palwal, Nuh, and Rewari in Haryana, and Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddha Nagar in Uttar Pradesh, it said. The DDMA emphasised the "whole-of-government" approach adopted for the drill, which includes the involvement of the armed forces, scientific bodies like the IMD and NCS, and civil society organisations. It said the exercise is a significant step towards making Delhi and the NCR more disaster-resilient through proactive planning, capacity building, and public awareness.
