TASEK GELUGOR, July 13 (Bernama) -- The Penang Veterinary Services Department (JPVPP) has stepped up efforts to curb the spread of African Swine Fever (ASF), which has been detected at three pig farms in Kampung Selamat here.
JPVPP director Dr Saira Banu Mohamed Rejab said ASF was first reported on July 7 after members of the public spotted pigs at a farm in Kampung Selamat showing clinical signs of the disease.
She said the animals were later sent to a slaughterhouse in the Seberang Perai Utara (SPU) district, and the department immediately conducted inspections and collected samples from farms in the area.
'To date, 188 pigs have been culled and 45 carcasses disposed of at the first farm, while 70 pigs have died at the second farm from ASF-related complications.
'We have yet to enter the third farm, which is also infected, and I was informed that many pigs there have shown signs of illness,' she said when contacted today.
Dr Saira Banu said all pig carcasses from the ASF-infected farms had been safely buried, with disposal works completed at the first and second farms.
According to her, the number of farms confirmed to be infected with ASF remained at three, with no new farms reporting cases of infected pigs.
'We urge pig farmers to remain vigilant and to continue enforcing the restrictions and ban on the movement of pigs from positive farms to the designated slaughterhouses.
'The JPVPP is also stepping up biosecurity monitoring and control at surrounding farms, while additional sampling is ongoing at farms identified as at risk,' she said.

Johor, MOH Agree On Urgent Staffing Needs, Upgrades At Three Major Hospitals

JOHOR BAHRU, July 15 (Bernama) -- The Johor government and the Ministry of Health (MOH) have agreed on the urgent need to fill vacancies, improve facilities and upgrade infrastructure at three major hospitals to strengthen healthcare services and support frontline workers. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said these key matters were discussed during a meeting between the state delegation and Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad in Putrajaya today. The discussion focused on enhancing the operations of Johor's three main hospitals, Hospital Sultanah Aminah, Hospital Sultan Ismail and Hospital Kulai. 'Both parties also agreed that Hospital Pasir Gudang and Klinik Kesihatan Cendana must be further improved with additional manpower and equipment ahead of their expected opening early next year. 'To ensure smooth implementation, a special task force will be set up to coordinate and monitor short-, medium-, and long-term action plans,' he said in a statement posted on Facebook. He also expressed his appreciation to the Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail, for his continued concern for the welfare and well-being of Johoreans, particularly in the area of public healthcare. Onn Hafiz emphasised that the state government and MOH remain committed to upholding the people's right to fair, efficient and quality medical treatment, while also safeguarding the welfare of frontline workers who form the backbone of the healthcare system. Yesterday, Onn Hafiz revealed that Johor is facing a worsening healthcare manpower crisis, with some nurses reportedly managing between 10 and 14 patients per shift, far exceeding the ideal nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:6, or a maximum of 1:8, especially at major hospitals. He described the situation as alarming, warning that it not only affects the morale of healthcare workers but also compromises the quality of care provided to patients.

BMI Programme Helps 90 Kelantan Cops Move Out Of Obesity Category

GENERAL KOTA BHARU, July 15 (Bernama) -- The Kelantan Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM)'s six-month 'Biggest Losses' Body Mass Index (BMI) reduction programme has helped 90 officers, rank and file, and civil staff from 354 participants move out of the obesity category. Kelantan deputy police chief DCP Mohd Ali Thamby said the remaining 264 participants are still undergoing the programme and are being closely monitored to strengthen the force's readiness through a holistic health approach. "The main goal of this programme is to help PDRM personnel achieve an ideal BMI, improve stamina and physical endurance, and cultivate a healthy work culture. "The ideal BMI is not just a health indicator, it reflects physical readiness, professional image, and the ability of personnel to perform demanding duties more effectively," he told reporters after closing the programme at the Kelantan Police Headquarters here today. The programme started last November and was initiated by the Training Branch of the Kelantan Contingent Management Department, with participation from 10 districts and 10 departments under the state PDRM. Meanwhile, Constable Muhammad Aiman Abdullah, 32, from the Gua Musang District Police Headquarters transport unit, emerged as the winner after reducing his weight by 27.8 kilogrammes (kg), from 105.8 kg to 78 kg over six months. "Previously, I would tire and feel sleepy easily, but now that I'm lighter, I feel more energetic and motivated to work. I avoided sugar, skipped rice at night, chose egg whites and grilled food without oil, and drank a lot of water. It was tough at first... the first one or two weeks, my hands and feet were shaking, but eventually, it became part of my routine," he said. -- BERNAMA
