Former Canisius student sentenced for posting threat of mass harm toward school
Just before 11:40 a.m. on the morning of Aug. 22, an 18-year-old Canisius student made a post on Snapchat that was 'threatening in nature.'
He pleaded guilty to making a threat of mass harm on Jan. 7. He will have to receive counseling and complete 60 hours of community service as a part of the sentence.
His name was originally released but is no longer being released due to his age at the time of the crime.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced Wednesday the arrest of 48 individuals and the filing of 153 charges during a six-day undercover operation targeting online child predators in Central Florida. The operation, led by the Marion County Sheriff's Office and supported by the Office of Statewide Prosecution, involved nine law enforcement agencies at the local, state, and federal levels. According to Uthmeier, it marks the highest number of arrests in the history of this annual initiative. Among those arrested were six foreign nationals who were flagged with detainers by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Authorities said they traveled to Florida from Jamaica, El Salvador, Dubai, and India with the intent to exploit children. "They came after children, but Florida and federal law enforcement were waiting for them," Uthmeier said. "Thanks to the Marion County Sheriff's Office for putting this operation together so these men were stopped before they could harm a single child." Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods urged parents to remain vigilant. "Parents, we will never arrest every single one of them," Woods said. "You have to know what your child is doing online, and children have to know what dangers are lurking online." Officials said the suspects used various platforms, including Snapchat, to try to contact minors who were actually undercover officers. The Attorney General's Office is suing Snapchat, alleging the company violated Florida law by misleading parents about the platform's risks. "This is one of the best operations I've seen," said State Attorney for the Fifth Judicial Circuit Bill Gladson. "Sheriff Woods and his deputies did an outstanding job catching and removing 40 predators from the Central Florida community." Married special education teacher pleads guilty to sending nudes to student on Snapchat
A married special education teacher from Missouri has admitted to sending nude images to a 16-year-old student, but avoided jail after more severe charges including statutory rape and sex trafficking of a child were dropped. Rikki Lynn Laughlin, 26, sent X-rated photos and a video of herself using a sex toy to the teen student over Snapchat, as well as soliciting nude pics of the boy and trying to pressure him into having sex, according to Maries County investigators, KRGC reported. Laughlin pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of a child creating substantial risk – 1st degree – 1st offense – no sexual conduct last Thursday, according to the report. She was a teacher at St. James High School in St. James, MO, around 75 miles southwest of St. Louis, at the time of the crimes between Sept. 8 and Oct. 19, 2023. 3 Rikki Lyn Laughlin, 26, pleaded guilty to exchanging nudes with an underage teen. On Oct. 23 last year, prosecutors charged Laughlin with felony counts of possession of child pornography, tamper or attempt to tamper with a victim in a felony prosecution, statutory rape – 2nd degree, sexual exploitation of a minor, tampering with physical evidence in a felony prosecution, furnishing pornographic material to a minor, and sexual trafficking of a child – 2nd degree – under 18 years of age. Laughlin was sentenced to five years of probation last week. City commissioner in Florida asked 12-year-old Illinois girl for nudes, cops say
An elected official in Florida is facing two dozen felony charges after a mom in Illinois reported he had been sexting her 12-year-old daughter over Snapchat, authorities said. St. Lucie County Sheriff Richard Del Toro Jr. announced July 24 that law enforcement conducted a traffic stop on Fort Pierce City Commissioner James Taylor, 38, and took him into custody. His arrest marks the culmination of a nearly yearlong investigation that began in August 2024 when the victim's mom filed a report with the Evanston Police Department, the sheriff said in a news conference. The mom of the now-13-year-old girl said a man had been inappropriately contacting her daughter over Snapchat beginning when she was 12, according to investigators. He sent her nude images of himself and asked her to do the same, Del Toro said. This went on for a couple months, investigators said. Detectives in Illinois traced the messages to a person in St. Lucie County and contacted the sheriff's office, which confirmed the suspect's IP address belonged to Taylor, the sheriff said. Investigators don't believe Taylor and the girl ever met in person. Taylor was pulled over during a traffic stop involving a 'ruse,' and was cooperating with detectives, according to the sheriff. 'I would say that he admitted his role in these and was very remorseful, obviously, I think mainly because he was caught,' Del Toro said. Taylor was elected Fort Pierce's District 2 commissioner in 2024 after serving on the county's planning and zoning commission for nearly a decade, according to his commissioner biography. He's involved in several local organizations, including the county's education board and theater advisory board. 'The City of Fort Pierce is aware of the recent arrest of Commissioner James Taylor,' a spokesperson for the city told McClatchy News in an email. 'We understand that this development may raise concerns within our community, and we want to reassure our residents that we remain committed to serving the public with integrity, transparency and accountability.'
