Nepali Sherpa guide Kami Rita scaled Mount Everest for the 31st time on Tuesday, breaking the record he set last year.
The 55-year-old reached the 8,849-metre (29,032 foot) peak - the highest in the world - by the traditional southeast ridge route, officials said, adding that 27 other Sherpas also accompanied the group.
Kami Rita, who uses only his first name, first climbed Everest in 1994 and has done so every year except for three years when authorities closed the mountain to climbers for various reasons.

More than 8,000 people have climbed Mount Everest since it was first scaled by New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953.
After Kami Rita, another Sherpa, Pasang Dawa, has ascended Everest the most with 29 climbs.
Among non-Sherpa climbers, the record is held by British guide Kenton Cool who has accomplished the feat 19 times, followed by American climbers Dave Hahn and Garrett Madison with 15 times each.
One of the poorest countries in the world, Nepal is home to eight of the world's 14 highest peaks and is heavily reliant on climbing, trekking, and tourism for foreign exchange.
Guiding foreign climbers to Everest and other peaks provides crucial family income to many Sherpas.
Authorities have issued 468 permits to climbers for Everest this March-May climbing season, and more than 300 climbers and Sherpas have already scaled the peak, officials said.

Katy Perry, Leonardo DiCaprio, and other celebrities caught in coastal tsunami scare

Tsunami waves flood an area after a powerful magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off Russia's far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, in Severo-Kurilsk, Sakhalin Region, Russia, July 30, 2025, in this still image taken from video. Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Survey of the Russian Academy of Sciences/Handout - REUTERS Katy Perry, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Aniston, and Oprah Winfrey are among the A-list celebrities whose coastal residences were swept into concern after a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia's coast triggered a tsunami advisory across the Pacific. The alert covers large sections of the US West Coast, Hawaii, and Alaska, regions known for their beachfront estates and celebrity hideaways. Leonardo DiCaprio's Malibu compound, estimated at over $13.8 million, and Jennifer Aniston's $21 million Montecito mansion fall within the zones under caution. Katy Perry owns a Santa Barbara, area estate reportedly worth $15 million, while Oprah Winfrey's sprawling $100 million Maui property has also been flagged due to its proximity to coastal areas impacted by wave activity. While no mandatory evacuations have been issued, residents have been strongly urged to avoid beaches and remain alert for several hours due to the risk of unpredictable wave activity. In Hawaii, waves measuring several feet reached shorelines on multiple islands, prompting local officials to open emergency routes and issue safety notices. On the mainland, California counties like Santa Barbara and Los Angeles, where many stars own property, also remain under advisory. So far, there have been no reports of injuries or structural damage. However, the situation has stirred concern among emergency services and locals, especially in areas where previous wildfires and flooding have already strained disaster response systems. Authorities continue to monitor for aftershocks and secondary wave surges, warning that unstable coastal conditions may persist.

Kalinskaya sets up DC final with Fernandez

Anna Kalinskaya celebrates after match point against Emma Raducanu in the DC Open semi-final at Rock Creek Park Tennis Center. PHOTO: GEOFF BURKE/REUTERS Anna Kalinskaya prevented a rematch of the 2021 US Open final by ousting Britain's Emma Raducanu, booking a berth against Canada's Leylah Fernandez in Sunday's DC Open final. The 26-year-old Russian, seeking her first WTA title, downed Raducanu 6-4, 6-3 in Saturday's Washington hard court semi-finals to reach her third career tour final. It denied what would have been the first meeting between Raducanu and Fernandez since they met as teen prodigies four years ago in the Flushing Meadows final, which Raducanu won 6-4, 6-3. "I think for the both of us, it would be a tremendous result," Fernandez said of the rematch. "We've come a long way from the 2021 US Open final." Left-hander Fernandez rallied to defeat third seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan 6-7 (2/7), 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (7/3) after three hours and 12 minutes to reach Sunday's final. "It was definitely a tough match. It was a battle from beginning to end," Fernandez said. "In important moments I was able to pull through." Fernandez won her only meeting with Kalinskaya, taking a first-round victory in 2021 at Guadalajara. "She's a very fast player, so it's going to be very intense rallies," Kalinskaya said. "I just hope I'm going to play great and I want to enjoy it." World number 36 Fernandez seeks her fourth career WTA title and first since the 2023 Hong Kong Open. Fernandez reached her seventh career WTA final and first since June 2024 at Eastbourne. Kalinskaya reached her only tour finals last year at Dubai and Berlin. Raducanu, ranked 46th, has not reached a WTA final since her Grand Slam breakthrough in New York. The men's final sends 13th-ranked Australian Alex de Minaur, who eliminated French lucky loser Corentin Moutet 6-4, 6-3, against 26th-ranked Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who eliminated eighth-ranked American Ben Shelton 6-2, 7-5. De Minaur is 2-2 lifetime against the Spaniard, winning their most recent meeting in a 2023 Canada semi-final. World number 12 Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon winner, and Fernandez each surrendered only one break. Rybakina fired winners on the final four points of the first tie-break to claim the opening set after 53 minutes. Rybakina broke to open the second set. Fernandez fought back from 0-40 down to hold in the fifth game then broke Rybakina in the 10th to pull level at 5-5. "I wasn't telling myself much in that moment," Fernandez said. "Listen to my coach and execute. Don't overthink too much." Fernandez jumped ahead 5-0 in the second tie-breaker and 4-0 in the third on her way to winning both, a far cry from leg cramp issues on Friday. "If I was going to get rolled out in a stretcher today, then so be it, but I was just going to give it my all," Fernandez said. Kalinskaya broke Raducanu in the ninth game and held to take the first set in 53 minutes. World number 39 Kalinskaya fired a backhand cross-court winner to break in the opening game of the second set but Raducanu broke back at love. Kalinskaya broke again for a 3-2 edge and held to the end, which came when Raducanu netted a forehand after 94 minutes. On the men's circuit, De Minaur, who lost the 2018 Washington final to Alexander Zverev, seeks his 10th ATP title. The Aussie broke for a 4-3 lead, took the first set in 57 minutes, then won the first 14 points of the second and cruised despite 33 unforced errors. "It wasn't pretty tennis, but I knew it was going to be a tricky match without a lot of rhythm," De Minuar said. "I had the mentality of doing whatever it took to get into the title match." Davidovich Fokina took the first set in 27 minutes and captured the match in 80 as he pushes for a first ATP title, having lost February finals at Delray Beach and Acapulco.

Record-breaking Root bats on, Eng 433-4

England's Joe Root celebrates his century on day three of the fourth Test against India at Old Trafford. Photo: REUTERS Joe Root climbed to second on the all-time list of Test run-scorers after hitting a sparkling 38th century on Friday as England hunted a series-clinching win against India. Ben Stokes' men, 2-1 up in the five-match series, were 433-4 at tea on the third day of the fourth Test at Old Trafford, 75 runs ahead of the toiling tourists. The imperious Root, who had just overtaken retired Australia great Ricky Ponting in the run-scoring charts, was 121 not out, with Stokes unbeaten on 36. Earlier, Ollie Pope (71) put on 144 for the third wicket with Root before he was dismissed by Washington Sundar, who also removed Harry Brook cheaply to give India renewed hope. But skipper Stokes ensured England regained the initiative, celebrating at the non-striker's end as Root reached 13,379 runs with a single behind point, moving one ahead of Ponting's figure. "Congratulations, Joe Root. Magnificent, second on the table," Ponting said on Sky Sports. England earlier resumed on 225-2 following a blistering opening partnership of 166 in 32 overs between Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett on day two, with Pope 20 not out and Root on 11. India's pacemen had too often been wayward on Thursday and Jasprit Bumrah saw his first ball Friday drift down the legside to be clipped away for four by Root in elegant fashion. Root then uppercut Mohammed Siraj over the slips for another boundary. On 21, the former England skipper walked a long away across his stumps only to miss an intended glance off Siraj. India reviewed for lbw after Ahsan Raza ruled in Root's favour but replays upheld the Pakistani umpire's decision, indicating the ball would have missed leg stump. There was another scare when Root, on 22, was nearly run out but Ravindra Jadeja's shy at the stump missed. Root then leapfrogged India's Rahul Dravid and South Africa's Jacques Kallis into third place in Test cricket's list of run-scorers. Pope, who drove Siraj for a superb four between cover and mid-off, completed a 93-ball fifty before Root followed him to that landmark in 99 balls. Spin, however, eventually paid dividends for India where pace had failed. Pope had added just one run to his lunchtime score of 70 when, beaten by the drift from off-spinner Sundar, he edged a flicked front-foot drive to KL Rahul at slip. England were soon 349-4 when Brook, on three, was stumped by Dhruv Jurel, deputising for injured India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. Root reached his century in 178 balls with a leg glance for four off debutant paceman Anshul Kamboj. His 38th Test century drew him level with Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara in fourth place on the list of most hundreds in a Test career.
