Six killed in Bangkok market after gunman opens fire
At least six people were killed when a gunman opened fire at a market in Thailand's capital Bangkok on Monday, Thai police said in a statement.
The fatalities include the gunman who took his own life, Charin Gopatta, Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, told Reuters.
"Police are investigating the identity of the person and the motive for the incident," Thai police said in a statement. The five people killed by the gunman were security guards at the market, it said.
No tourists were killed or injured in the shooting incident, said Sanong Saengmani, a police official in Bangkok's Bang Sue district, where the market that mainly sells agricultural produce is located.

Tourism is a key economic driver in Thailand, Southeast Asia's second-largest economy, where growth has been sluggish and such incidents can potentially dampen sentiment.
In video footage shared by police, a suspect in a white hat and a backpack slung over his chest is seen walking through a parking lot at the market.
Gun violence and gun ownership are not uncommon in Thailand. In October 2023, a 14-year-old suspect used a modified handgun to kill two people and injure five others at a luxury mall in central Bangkok.
A year earlier, a former police officer killed 36 people, including 22 children, in a gun-and-knife attack at a nursery in eastern Thailand.

A woman was killed in the Adler district in a Ukrainian drone attack late last month, but attacks on Sochi, which hosted the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, have been infrequent in the war that Russia launched in February 2022. May 9 riots: Omar, Shibli among over 100 convicted by ATC
FAISALABAD: An anti-terrorism court on Thursday sentenced more than 100 members of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan's party to prison terms on charges related to riots that targeted military sites in 2023, a court order said. Fifty-eight of the defendants, who included parliamentarians and senior officials, were sentenced to 10 years in prison and the rest were given sentences ranging from one to three years, the court said. The accused include Omar Ayub Khan and Shibli Faraz, the leaders of Khan's opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party (PTI) in the lower and upper houses of parliament respectively, the court order seen by Reuters read. 'The prosecution has proved its case against the accused without a shadow of doubt,' it said in announcing the sentences. Khan, who has been in prison since 2023 facing charges of corruption, land fraud and disclosure of official secrets, is being tried separately on similar charges related to the riot. The government accuses him and other leaders of inciting the May 9, 2023, protests, during which demonstrators attacked military and government buildings, including the army headquarters in Rawalpindi. He denies wrongdoing and says all the cases are politically motivated as part of a military-backed crackdown to dismantle his party. The military denies it. Woman dies on bus with iPhones glued to her body

Photo: Reuters A 20-year-old woman died under mysterious circumstances during a bus ride in Brazil, with authorities discovering 26 iPhones glued directly to her skin. The bizarre incident unfolded as she travelled alone from Foz do Iguaçu to São Paulo, a long-distance route often scrutinised for smuggling activity. The woman reportedly began feeling unwell when the bus stopped at a restaurant in Guarapuava, Paraná. Emergency services were called after she complained of difficulty breathing. Paramedics from the Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU) treated her on-site and attempted resuscitation for 45 minutes. Despite their efforts, she was declared dead at the scene. While treating her, medics found tightly wrapped packages on her body, later revealed to be 26 iPhones affixed directly to her skin using some kind of adhesive. No drugs were detected by sniffer dogs, but authorities seized bottles of alcohol found in her luggage. Her identity has not been disclosed. Police from multiple agencies, including the Military Police, Civil Police, and Scientific Police, are now involved. Forensic teams have been deployed, and the seized phones were handed over to the Federal Revenue Service as part of the smuggling investigation. Authorities await toxicology and forensic reports to determine the official cause of death. The woman's mode of transport and concealed cargo strongly point to an illicit smuggling operation, although it remains unclear whether she was coerced or knowingly involved. The unusual nature of the concealment method, with the phones glued directly to her body, has only deepened public speculation around the case. The investigation is ongoing, and officials say further details will be released once the forensic analysis is complete.
