Highway 144 closed northwest of Sudbury after crash

An Ontario Provincial Police cruiser blocks a closed roadway for a police investigation in this undate photo. (File photo/Ontario Provincial Police) A 'serious' two-vehicle collision has closed part of Highway 144 in the Greater Sudbury community of Cartier, with delays expected to last several hours. Ontario Provincial Police first reported the crash on social media at about 1:45 p.m. on Saturday, asking it had blocked all lanes between Windy Lake Provincial Park Road and the entrance to community. The Ministry of Transportation's 511 traveller service confirmed the full closure of the highway in the area at 2:02 p.m., urging drivers to avoid the area. Police advised motorists to use Old Cartier Road, also known as Old Highway 544, as a detour where possible. OPP warned the closure could extend for some time. '(The) closure will last several hours,' police wrote. 'Expect traffic delays.' For the most up-to-date road conditions, check Ontario 511. Authorities have not released any details about injuries, the types of vehicles involved, the cause of the crash or if any charges are pending as a result. OPP said they will provide additional updates later. CTV News has reached out to authorities for more information on the crash but those messages have not yet been returned. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Spencer Colby A crash involving multiple vehicles has sent two people to hospital and caused heavy traffic on Highway 8 Saturday afternoon. In an email to CTV News, Ontario Provincial Police said the crash happened between two small sedans and one SUV. One elderly woman, who's age was not provided and one man in his 30s were transported to hospital with minor injuries as a precaution. At around 4 p.m., bumper-to-bumper traffic could be seen on the highway just before the Highway 7 on-ramp. Police said traffic had become a stop-and-go domino effect.
