Odisha undergraduate girl student's self-immolation bid following sexual harassment: College Principal arrested, Governor seeks report

Bhubaneswar, July 14 (UNI) With the undergraduate girl student of Government-run Fakir Mohan Autonomous College still battling for life after resorting to self-immolation for allegedly being denied justice over 'sexual harassment' by an assistant professor, Odisha police today arrested the principal of the higher educational institution on the charge of allegedly abetting the suicide. While controversy over the unsavory incident is not showing signs of dying down, Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati has sought a report from the state government on the circumstances which drove the college student to resort to self-immolation. The Governor has sought a report on steps taken to address the situation. Principal of the college Dilip Ghosh has been arrested for alleged complicity in the incident, which forced the girl to end her life. The role of the principal in not bringing the matter to the notice of police amounts to suppression of crime committed against a young girl and is a penal offence under BNS. After prima facie evidence was found against Ghosh, he is placed under arrest and will be later forwarded to court, said a police official. Demand for Ghosh's arrest was being raised by the student community and family of the victim. The Government had earlier suspended the principal for allegedly covering up the girl's complaint and not ensuring justice to her. Accused Sameer Kumar Sahoo, Assistant professor, Education department, who allegedly sought sexual favour from the victim and threatened to sabotage her academic career, was arrested on Saturday last- the day when the victim poured petrol to self-immolate in front of the principal office. Meanwhile, the health condition of the victim girl, who suffered over 90 percent burn injury, is stated to be extremely critical. In a related development, Governor Kambhampati acting on Leader of Opposition in Odisha Assembly Naveen Patnaik's plea for governor's intervention has sought a report from the government on the unfortunate incident, which has triggered statewide condemnation. 'Spoke to Higher Education Minister Shri Suryabanshi Suraj (@suryabanshibjp) regarding the unfortunate incident involving the girl student of FM (Autonomous) College, Balasore, who is currently undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. I sought details about the circumstances that led to the incident and the steps being taken to address the situation,' Governor Kambhampati stated in a post on X. The unsavory episode, which brought to the fore unsafe campus environs for girl students in higher educational institutions, severely damaged the government's image keeping in view the fact the State has witnessed spurt in crimes against women during the one-year-old BJP government in Odisha. Improved momentum in China-India ties should be cherished with great care: Wang Yi to EAM

Beijing, July 14 (UNI) Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, during his talks with Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in Beijing today, said that China-India relations have sustained a momentum of improvement and development, which has not come easily and should be cherished with great care. China and India should adhere to the direction of good-neighborliness and friendship, and find a way for mutual respect and trust, peaceful coexistence, common development and win-win cooperation, he said, according to a Chinese readout. Wang Yi said that the current international landscape had evolved profoundly, and that unilateral protectionism and acts of power bullying had brought serious challenges to the world. As two major Eastern civilizations and major emerging economies living side by side, the essence of Sino-Indian relations is how to live in harmony and achieve mutual success. Last year's meeting between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Modi in Kazan reached an important consensus, pointing the way for the improvement and development of Sino-Indian relations. Both sides should choose to stand on high ground, plan for the long term, adhere to the direction of good-neighbourliness and friendship, realize 'the dragon and the elephant dance together', and find a way for the two countries to live together with mutual respect and trust, peaceful coexistence, common development, and win-win cooperation. Wang Yi said that this year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and India, and that China-India relations maintain a momentum of improved development, which is hard-won and worth cherishing. Relations between the two countries have their own historical logic and endogenous dynamics, and they are not directed at third parties, nor should they be interfered with by them, he added. They should trust each other rather than suspect each other, cooperate with each other rather than compete with each other, and achieve each other rather than consume each other. Wang Yi said China is willing to work together with India to implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, reflect the strategic vision of emerging and developing countries, consistently enhance political mutual trust, expand exchanges and cooperation halfway, properly handle conflicts and differences from the overall situation, and cooperate with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Strengthen cooperation and cooperation on other multilateral stages to promote the sustained, healthy and stable development of China-India relations. Wang Yi said that President Xi Jinping proposed to promote the construction of a community with a shared future for mankind, and Prime Minister Modi advocated 'one world, one family'. These concepts are connected with each other. Both China and India support multilateralism and hope that the international order will develop in a more just and reasonable direction. China is ready to strengthen communication and coordination with India to jointly safeguard the multilateral trading system, the international environment of stability and open cooperation in the global chain of production and supply, promote an equal and orderly multipolar world and inclusive economic globalization, and work together to safeguard the common interests of the 'Global South' and promote regional peace, stability, development and prosperity, he said.
