INDIANAPOLIS: Chicago Sky co-owner Nadia Rawlinson knew security concerns were serious.
The Sky have physical security nearly 24 hours a day – around hotels, outside gyms, by buses and planes – but one of the final frontiers of player safety was the internet.
Earlier this month, the Sky teamed up with Moonshot to protect their players from threats and hate on social media, the first relationship of its kind in the WNBA.
"People think as athletes, we should take what comes our way,' Sky guard Ariel Atkins said. "We are human and some comments that people make are inhumane. It's phenomenal of our organization to take care of us.'
Moonshot's technology was created for use in counterterrorism; it's used by the US government.
"It's a great thing to implement right now,' said Sky All-Star Angel Reese, who has one of the most popular social media platforms among WNBA players. "It's really important to be able to have that (protection), especially as a woman."
What does this technology do for the Sky players?
Moonshot monitors more than 25 social media and internet platforms, including those on which players do not have personal accounts. The technology shrinks the millions of posts it looks at every day into thousands of posts that contain direct threats to the athletes.
From there, Moonshot's team of human threat assessors, from clinical psychologists to social workers, takes over. They look through the flagged posts and report them, if necessary – whether that's to the social media platforms themselves for removal or, in more serious and imminent cases, directly to law enforcement.
They target actionable threats to the athletes, like the release of their personal information or possible stalkers.
It's that human involvement that Moonshot co-founder and CEO Vidhya Ramalingam said is necessary to its success.
"This is not a problem that can just be solved by technology alone,' she said. "It's fundamentally a human problem, and this is a human partnership.'
How the partnership came to be
Rawlinson, who said her own experiences as a woman of color have informed her understanding of the issue, knew it was something she wanted to focus on.
"With the rise in women's sports, the rise in attention, the greater fandom, the greater investment, all of it is historic,' Rawlinson said. "But there's a dark side to that. At some point, you just want to play the game, so the goal is to remove some of the noise that happens off the court.'
After reading about Moonshot in a tech publication a few weeks ago, Rawlinson reached out to Ramalingam about a partnership.
It was a quick connection.
"It was really clear there was a values alignment,' Ramalingam said. "Some of that stems from some of our shared experiences as women of color in spaces where so often our voices are underrepresented, and the desire to actually do something about it and not just sit there.
"For far too long, I saw women like me, people of color, be overrepresented as targets and underrepresented in the solution,' she said. – AP

Inter Miami's Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba in question vs. FC Cincinnati

Inter Miami will host FC Cincinnati in a matchup of two of the top five teams in the Eastern Conference on Saturday night in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. FC Cincinnati (15-6-3, 48 points) blanked Inter Miami 3-0 on July 16 and surged to the top spot in the conference following a 1-0 win over Real Salt Lake last Saturday. Inter Miami (12-4-5, 41 points) rebounded from its loss to Cincinnati with a 5-1 win over the New York Red Bulls last Saturday and sit in fifth place with three more matches to play than each of the East's top four teams. FC Cincinnati held Lionel Messi without a goal in the previous matchup, snapping the superstar's league-record streak of five matches with a brace. But Miami enters Saturday's clash with some uncertainty surrounding two of their biggest stars after Messi and Jordi Alba did not participate in Wednesday's All-Star Game. MLS rules state that any All-Star player who does not participate in the game without either a reported injury or a league-granted exemption faces a one- match suspension. The league has yet to announce such a move. "Most of our teams had a 10-day break. Miami hasn't," MLS commissioner Don Garber said Wednesday. "So we have to manage that as a league. At the same time, we do have rules, and we have to manage through that as well." Cincinnati superstar Evander, who scored two goals in the recent victory over Miami, served as team captain in the MLS All-Stars' 3-1 win over the Liga MX All-Stars. Evander also set a record in the All-Star Game Skills challenge for points scored. He enters Saturday's game with the third-most goal contributions in the league (23). "Just playing (and) just enjoying the moment," Evander said on the Apple TV broadcast. "I was kind of focused on the targets, and I did it." Luca Orellano, who scored the lone goal in the win over Real Salt Lake, also continues to be a force in terms of creating scoring chances. For Cincinnati, Ahoueke Denkey (leg), Obinna Nwobodo (leg) and Yuya Kubo (ankle) remain out. Miami is expected to again be without injured goalkeeper Oscar Ustari and likely will turn to Rocco Rios Novo in net again. Maxi Falcon also is out due to yellow card accumulation.

Cycling-Britain's Lizzie Deignan retires after announcing pregnancy

FILE PHOTO: British cyclist Lizzie Armitstead-Deignan talks with her husband Sky rider Philip Deignan before the start of the 7th stage of Paris Nice cycling race, in Nice, France March 11, 2017. REUTERS/Eric Gaillard/File Photo LONDON (Reuters) -Britain's former world champion Lizzie Deignan has announced her retirement with immediate effect after confirming she is pregnant with her third child. The 36-year-old has been the flag bearer for women's road cycling in Britain since claiming a silver medal at the London 2012 Olympics and had planned to see out the season. Her crowning moment came at the 2015 world championships when she won the women's road race in Richmond, out-sprinting Dutchwoman Anna van der Breggen for gold. "A new chapter in the Deignan story," the Lidl-Trek team rider posted on Instagram, alongside a photo of a babygrow. "I have this life outside of cycling that gives me so much fulfilment and so much love," she said. "Often people say, 'Retire on the top.' But I have no ego or necessity to retire at the top. I'm really happy to go full circle and to have ended my career as somebody that helps other people win bike races again." Deignan enjoyed 43 professional wins, including a stunning victory at the inaugural women's Paris-Roubaix in 2021. Other notable wins included Liege-Bastogne-Liege, Strade Bianche and the Tour of Flanders. She took a career break in 2018 after the birth of daughter Orla, and again in 2022 following the birth of her son Shea. Her final victory came during a team time trial in the opening stage of La Vuelta Femenina in Spain. Deignan, who also won a world title on the track in 2009 as part of Britain's team pursuit squad, has been a fierce advocate for equality in women's professional cycling, long overshadowed by men's racing. "I feel like I've carried the torch for quite a long time now, and it's really cool that there is now a group of women ready to take over," she told Cycling Weekly this year. Messi, Alba risk ban after MLS All-Star game withdrawal

LOS ANGELES: Lionel Messi and Inter Miami team-mate Jordi Alba could face a suspension after withdrawing from Major League Soccer's All-Star game. Argentina superstar Messi and Alba had been due to start for a combined MLS team which will face a squad representing Mexico's Liga-MX in Austin later Wednesday. However a league source said Inter Miami had notified officials on Wednesday that both Messi and Alba had been pulled from the event. Under MLS rules, both Messi and Alba could be given a one-game suspension unless they have a valid reason for the withdrawal, such as an injury. A league source told AFP however no decision on possible disciplinary action would be taken until MLS officials had spoken to Inter Miami to confirm the circumstances of the withdrawal. The duo's participation in Wednesday's mid-season exhibition game had been under a cloud after Miami coach Javier Mascherano indicated at the weekend he wanted Messi and Alba to rest. "The players are called up. I'd prefer they rest, but it's not my decision," Mascherano said. "I know how important the All-Star Game is, and as far as I know, there's no decision from the club - everything continues as normal." Both Messi, 38, and Alba, 36, have a history of recent injury problems while Inter Miami has faced a gruelling schedule which included participation in the recent FIFA Club World Cup. - AFP
