Unfortunate that rape cases are being politicised, this cannot be tolerated: Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan

India Gazettea day ago

New Delhi [India], June 30 (ANI): Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan condemned the alleged gang rape of a law student in Kolkata and said that such cases were being politicised and this cannot be tolerated. This comes amid mounting protests by several political parties over the incident.
Ranjeet Ranjan said, 'In any state, whether it is our government or the BJP government, if there is harassment against women, then it is absolutely condemnable and it should not be tolerated in any situation. We went to Odisha and in a week there were cases of gang rapes in three different places. Whether it is Odisha or West Bengal, there should be no attempt to protect anyone, and it is unfortunate that everywhere it is politicised and as a woman, this cannot be tolerated.'
Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kunal Ghosh on Sunday hit back at Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's remarks against the TMC government, asserting that the state remains one of the 'safest places for women' in the country.
Responding to Pradhan's demand to 'free' West Bengal from TMC rule, Ghosh accused the Union Minister of ignoring atrocities against women in BJP-ruled states.
'Tell Dharmendra Pradhan to talk about crimes against women in places like Unnao, Hathras, Prayagraj, and Delhi first... Police take action in West Bengal. Social crimes have lessened in the state. This is the safest state for women,' the TMC leader said.
The remarks came hours after Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan alleged that West Bengal under TMC rule was facing a governance crisis similar to the Emergency imposed in 1975. Drawing a parallel, Pradhan said the TMC was carrying forward the legacy of the Congress-era Emergency by eroding constitutional values.
'50 years ago, an Emergency was declared to dismantle, tear apart, and disregard the country's Constitution... It is disheartening that the party carrying forward that Congress culture is the Trinamool Congress. It has not yet overcome that mindset,' Pradhan said during a press conference.
Meanwhile, Kalyan Banerjee in the latest row said, 'Yes, incidents do happen. Not all men are like this, but some have a perverted mindset. These perverted men then come out on the streets, hold protests and demand the death penalty.'
On June 25, a female student was allegedly gang-raped inside the South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata's Kasba area. The police have arrested four persons, including the main accused Manojit Mishra, and formed a five-member Special team to investigate the incident. (ANI)

Didn't discuss leadership change with MLAs, MPs in Karnataka: Congress leader Surjewala

AICC general secretary and party's Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala on Tuesday ruled out gathering any opinion on leadership change, remarks that came in the wake of internal bickering in the Congress' state unit over the matter. Surjewala said that he has been meeting the MLAs and MPs to understand the work done by them in their respective constituencies. "Some of you asked me are you taking opinion on leadership change. The answer I had given yesterday also and I am answering again today-- the answer is clearly 'no' in one word," Surjewala said in a press conference. Flanked by Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, who is also the Karnataka State Congress president, Surjewala said he had a meeting with the party MLAs, MPs, MLCs and party candidates who contested the assembly and Lok Sabha elections. He also said that in the next seven to eight days he would meet all the MLAs. Live Events Explaining the reason, the Congress general secretary said, "We are meeting the MLAs and MPs. We are trying to understand from our MLAs what work they have done in the past two years in their respective constituencies. It's important to review their performance." "If I'm an MLA, I'm obliged to ensure that my accountability to the people and the election promises of the Congress party are fulfilled in my constituency. So, I am asking my MLAs to give their report cards," he added. The MLAs will also be asked about the status of the Block Congress Committee, Assembly Congress Committee and the number of party meetings they held from time to time, the Congress leader said. "We are also asking them (MLAs) what, if any, difficulty or aspiration he or she has. Every MLA has some aspirations or some more work to be done in the constituency," he explained. Stating that it was fine to have aspirations, Surjewala said their ambitions will be conveyed to government and whatever best can be done on a priority basis will be taken up. After the MLAs, the Congress leader said he would meet the ministers to understand what they have done in their respective constituencies. The role of the frontal organisations such as NSUI, Mahila Congress, SC/ST and OBC, Minority, Kisan departments and Youth Congress will be reviewed, he said. Surjewala said it was necessary to see the status of the implementation of the five guarantees. The five guarantees are Rs 3,000 monthly assistance to homemakers, loan waivers up to Rs 3 lakh for farmers, Rs 25 lakh health insurance per family, Rs 4,000 monthly allowance for unemployed youth, and free bus travel for women. On the BJP being critical of the five guarantees, he said, "This is a bogey raised by BJP in Karnataka. They want the guarantees to be shut down." "I reiterate that the BJP leaders from R Ashoka to Vijayendra want the five guarantees to be stopped. They want Rs 58,000 crore not to go to the accounts of Kannadigas in a transparent manner," he alleged. The Congress leader said the five guarantees will never be stopped. On some Congress MLAs' charges that there was no development work happening in their segments, Surjewala said there are sufficient funds with the government in Karnataka. Regarding MLAs giving open statements in public against the government, the Congress leader said, "What we deliberate in the party should remain within the party. I have advised my MLAs also. If they have a problem, instead of raising an issue or a non-issue to settle score, raise it with the head of the family -- In the PCC, there is Shivakumar and in the government there is Siddaramaiah." PM's 8-year 'landmark' journey of GST meets Rahul Gandhi's 'economic injustice' cry

As the Goods and Services Tax (GST) completed eight years of its implementation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday praised it as a landmark reform that has reshaped India's economic landscape. However, his statement drew sharp criticism from Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, who called GST a tool of "economic injustice" that has punished the poor and benefited a few a post on X, Prime Minister Modi said, "Eight years since it was introduced, GST stands out as a landmark reform that has reshaped India's economic landscape. By reducing the compliance burden, it has greatly improved the Ease of Doing Business, particularly for small and medium enterprises. GST has also served as a powerful engine for economic growth, while fostering true cooperative federalism by making states equal partners in this journey to integrate India's market."advertisementHe said the tax reform had not only simplified processes but also promoted the spirit of cooperative federalism, with states becoming equal partners in building a unified national market. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, however, launched a blistering attack on the Modi government over its implementation of the GST. Responding to the Prime Minister's remarks, Gandhi wrote: "8 years on, the Modi government's GST is not a tax reform - it's a brutal tool of economic injustice and corporate cronyism. It was designed to punish the poor, crush MSMEs, undermine states, and benefit a few billionaire friends of the Prime Minister."Gandhi alleged that instead of the promised "Good and Simple Tax", what India got was a "compliance nightmare" riddled with a five-slab tax regime that has undergone over 900 criticised the system for being confusing and bureaucratic, claiming that items like caramel popcorn and cream buns had been caught in its "web of confusion".advertisementHe further said the GST framework favoured large corporations with resources to manage its complexities, while small traders, shopkeepers and MSMEs struggled to cope. "The GST portal remains a source of daily harassment," he claimed that over 18 lakh enterprises have shut down since GST was rolled out, and accused the government of weaponising GST dues to target non-BJP-ruled states."Petrol and diesel have been deliberately kept outside the GST framework, hurting farmers, transporters, and ordinary people," he asserted that the GST, originally envisioned by the UPA to unify India's markets and simplify taxation, had been "betrayed by poor implementation, political bias, and bureaucratic overreach". Calling for reform, Gandhi said, "India deserves a tax system that works for all, not just the privileged few, so that every Indian, from the small shopkeeper to the farmer, can be a stakeholder in our nation's progress."WHAT IS GST?The Goods and Services Tax (GST), introduced on July 1, 2017, under the stewardship of then-Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, replaced a convoluted system of indirect taxes, including VAT, excise duty, and service tax-with a single, streamlined tax applicable on the supply of goods and services across as a transformative reform, GST aimed to simplify tax compliance, eliminate the cascading effect of multiple levies, and boost the ease of doing business.
