WCL owner on scheduling of IND vs PAK games despite border tensions - ‘It was premature on our part to want to go ahead'
World Championship of Legends (WCL) owber Harshit Tomar has admitted it was premature on their part to go ahead with the India vs Pakistan matches in the 2025 edition of the tournament despite knowing the recent border tensions between the two countries. India Champions were scheduled to play Pakistan Champions first in group stages and then in the semifinals. In both the cases, the Indian players refused to play Pakistan in the light of Pahalgam attack that killed 26 innocent lives on April 22. India retaliated with Operation Sindoor months after. Since then, calls to boycott Pakistan in every aspect grew and it was no surprise, pressure was on the WCL organisers too. Days before the group stage match between India and Pakistan on July 20, fans took to social media, to show their displeasure over the IND vs PAK game. The game was abandoned eventually after several Indian cricketers withdrew from playing against Pakistan. A similar scenario took place ahead of the first semifinal where Pakistan were set to play India. But the Indian retired cricketers stood their ground and didn't play the game, allowing Pakistan a smooth passage to the summit clash where they lost to South Africa. Speaking for the first time on the IND vs PAK issue, Tomar he failed to understand the emotions of the Indian audience. 'I felt really bad. You raised questions about me; I get that. But you raised questions on Yuvraj Singh, who was battling cancer, and still he played the World Cup," Tomar said in Shubhankar Mishra's YouTube channel. "We are Indians, we are emotional. We were being bashed on social media, and we didn't want to do anything wrong. We failed to read the emotions, and it was premature on our part to want to go ahead with the match,' added the WCL owner. 'The entire Indian team had the stance of not going ahead with the match against Pakistan. All 15 players decided not to play against Pakistan,' he added. Tomar also cited the examples of India vs Pakistan clashes in the Asia Cup and Women's World Cup later this year and said WCL can't be faulted entirely. 'The Women's World Cup is soon going to happen. India will take on Pakistan there. Asia Cup chatter is also there. You tell me, where were we wrong in wanting to go ahead with the match? It was next to impossible for me to change things at the last minute. I just had the option of not going ahead with the tournament this year,' said Tomar.

IND vs ENG 5th Test: Anderson-Tendulkar series breaks all-time batting record
KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Joe Root and Ben Duckett The ongoing India-England Test series has become one for the history books, with nine different batters scoring over 400 runs — the most ever in a single Test series. This remarkable feat surpasses previous records held by the West Indies in Australia (1975/76) and the 1993 Ashes, where eight batters achieved the milestone. India have dominated the run charts. India Captain Shubman Gill leads the pack with a stunning 754 runs across five Tests. KL Rahul (532), Ravindra Jadeja (516), Rishabh Pant (479), and Yashasvi Jaiswal (411) have also had memorable campaigns. For England, Ben Duckett (462), Joe Root (455)*, Jamie Smith (432), and Harry Brook (408)* have all played standout innings. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! These big scores were made possible by largely batting-friendly pitches across the series — The Oval being the only venue where bowlers consistently found help from the surface. And on Day 4 of the final Test there, India's bowlers made that advantage count. Yashasvi Jaiswal press conference: Message from Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli help, support from Gambhir Mohammed Siraj continued his impressive run by dismissing England captain Ollie Pope with a sharp nip-backer, becoming the series' leading wicket-taker with 20 wickets. Earlier, Prasidh Krishna removed Ben Duckett for 54 after sustained pressure from the Indian seamers. Poll Who do you think will win the final Test? India England At lunch, England were 164 for 3, still needing 210 more runs to complete a record chase. With Joe Root and Harry Brook at the crease, it's all set for a gripping finale — but India, with the ball moving under overcast skies, remain in control. 'Where Were We Wrong?': WCL Owner Breaks Silence On India-Pakistan Match Cancellation
Last Updated: Harshit Tomar has defended the decision to initially proceed with the India-Pakistan match in the World Championship of Legends. World Championship of Legends owner Harshit Tomar has questioned how he was wrong in going ahead with the league stage game between India and Pakistan, mentioning how India and Pakistan are going to play each other in the upcoming Women's World Cup as well as the Asia Cup. Former India cricketers Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, Irfan and Yusuf Pathan pulled out of the contest a day before the game and the organisers had to call the match off. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board on Sunday, August 3, announced a blanket ban on its cricketers' participation in future editions of the WCL, accusing the tournament organisers of being 'biased" and lacking sporting integrity. 'We are going ahead with the tournament in England, which means that everything was taken care of 8-10 months in advance. Our schedule was revealed in December. The Champions Trophy was played in February," Tomar said while speaking on Shubhankar Mishra's YouTube channel. 'I cannot express my sadness at what happened in Pahalgam. We supported Operation Sindoor. The war happened and then it was stopped. Then, the sports between the two countries started to get normal," Tomar said. The World Championship of Legends owner said that he will always abide by what the Indian government says. 'The Women's World Cup is soon going to happen. India will take on Pakistan there. Asia Cup chatter is also there. You tell me, where were we wrong in wanting to go ahead with the match? It was next to impossible for me to change things at the last minute," Tomar said. 'We had all the permissions from the ECB. Cricket is an emotion. As the match got close, people realised the reality of India playing against Pakistan. They started to express their emotions," Tomar added. 'I felt really bad. You raised questions about me; I get that. But you raised questions on Yuvraj Singh, who was battling cancer and still he played the World Cup. We are Indians, we are emotional," Tomar said. Meanwhile, the decision by PCB follows a sequence of events in which India forfeited both their group-stage clash and semifinal against Pakistan, citing the nation's stand against bilaterial ties with Pakistan after the gruesome Pahalgam terror attack. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
