Beach campaigners recreate Pink Floyd album art

A campaign group against plans to bring an electricity cable from an offshore wind farm onshore at a Devon beach have staged a Pink Floyd-inspired demonstration.
White Cross offshore wind farm's plans at Saunton Sands - where the rock band shot the cover for its 1987 album A Momentary Lapse of Reason - were approved by North Devon Council on 7 May, despite more than 1,800 objections.
Founder of Save Our Sands, Helen Cooper, held the demonstration on Sunday morning. She said: "If this can be approved in this area, nowhere is safe."
North Devon councillors were won over by the developers' argument the project would create new jobs and bring renewable energy to the region.
White Cross offshore wind farm wants to put seven floating turbines about 30 miles (52km) off the north Devon coast and plans to bring a power cable onshore at Saunton Sands, then under Braunton Burrows and across the Taw Estuary to connect to a new electricity substation.
Ms Cooper said she was "bitterly disappointed but not surprised" after plans were approved.
She said the idea for the demonstration came after the council's planning meeting, in which she said she thought the council had its own "momentary lapse of reason to have approved" the plans.
When plans were approved, Al Rayner, the project director for White Cross, promised his company would "inject £153m into the local economy" and it was an "enormous" opportunity.
Objectors at the planning meeting cited concerns about the impact on tourism, on the environment and about high numbers of heavy goods vehicles.
About 100 members of the public came to the meeting with the vast majority against the plans, while leading figures from business and education spoke in favour of the application.
The Pink Floyd album artwork depicts dozens of beds with metal frames stretching out far into the distance on the beach, with a man sitting on one bed holding a mirror.
Members of the campaign group raised about £895 in less than 24 hours to fund the demonstration, Ms Cooper said.

"We've been really overwhelmed by the support," she added. "It's to highlight the fact that we feel... we have been silenced.
"What we're trying to do is highlight the fact that we really need people to value this area a lot more.
"It's a very precious environment.
"We feel if this can be approved in this area, nowhere is safe, nowhere in the UK, nowhere in the world."
Ms Cooper said the campaign group had not been set up against the wind farm or the cable itself, but it was against the cable route.
She added: "Our beauty, our ecology, our environment is so very special, not just in North Devon, and that doesn't seem to be given the sort of respect it deserves."

Car dealers halt sales of two second-hand models amid 'stop-drive' warning

Car dealers have been told to halt sales of second-hand Citroens amid replacements to potentially dangerous airbags. The warning was extended after the French manufacturer's parent company Stellantis issued a 'stop-drive' notice to certain Citroen models in June. It comes after a woman sustained fatal injuries caused by an airbag in a 2014 Citroen C3 in Reims, France, last year. Now, second-hand Citroens are also being included in the warning amid thousands still being listed for sale across the UK, according to This is Money. 'Buyers could have been driving away in potentially dangerous motors while also invalidating their insurance,' an article states. Since then, a team of motor trade lawyers have now issued a nationwide warning to used car dealers to suspend sales of vehicles in stock What Citroens are being recalled? The vehicles affected are second-generation Citroen C3s produced from 2009 to 2016 and first-generation DS3s manufactured from 2016 to 2019. As a result, around 82,000 C3 and DS3 models have been removed from the road across France. What is the recall on the Citroen C3 2025? The vehicles use Takata airbag systems, which could be faulty. However, Stellantis UK said that there were no reported incidents of faults in the UK, but it has decided to take action regardless. The car manufacturer in a recent statement said: 'Stellantis UK is mobilising its full network of suppliers, retailers and manufacturing plant to support this action to ensure the fastest, safest and most convenient solution for each customer. 'Stellantis remains fully committed to acting swiftly, transparently, and responsibly in addressing this issue.' Owners have been told to book their vehicles in to be rectified as early as possible and to not drive them in the meantime. However, a study by Which? revealed that hundreds of these cars were listed for sale on major used vehicle websites with no information that the manufacturer had issued a stop-drive notice. How do I check my Citroen recall? If you already own an affected Citroen, you should be contacted by letter, or you can check whether your car is affected by using the VIN check tool on Citroen's website. Trump unloads in late-night rants threatening to prosecute news networks, Beyonce, Oprah and Kamala Harris

Despite the lateness of the hour in Scotland, Donald Trump remained vocal on social media Saturday, unleashing a late-night rant in which he threatened to prosecute Kamala Harris, Oprah Winfrey and Beyonce while lashing out at news networks whose 'licenses could, and should, be revoked.' The president, who is spending the weekend golfing in the UK, wrote at 7.45 p.m. ET (12.45 a.m. local BST) that he was reviewing the large amount of money spent by his Democratic opponents 'probably illegally' during the 2024 election. Trump claimed Beyonce was paid $11 million to endorse Harris, and that she 'never sang, not one note, and left the stage to a booing and angry audience!' He also claimed that Democrats paid $3 million in 'expenses' to Oprah and $600,000 to civil rights activist and TV personality Reverend Al Sharpton. There is no evidence that any of the people named in Trump's rant were paid for their endorsement by the Democratic campaign. 'YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO PAY FOR AN ENDORSEMENT. IT IS TOTALLY ILLEGAL TO DO SO,' the president wrote in a Truth Social post. 'Can you imagine what would happen if politicians started paying for people to endorse them. All hell would break out!' 'Kamala, and all of those that received Endorsement money, BROKE THE LAW. They should all be prosecuted!' he added. Oprah previously said she 'was not paid a dime' to appear alongside Harris, whose campaign covered $1 million in production costs for a live-streamed event. 'The people who worked on that production needed to be paid. And were. End of story,' Oprah said at the time. The Harris campaign also has denied ever paying Beyonce for her endorsement. The campaign similarly paid her production company Parkwood Production Media LLC $165,000, according to Federal Elections Commission records. Beyonce's mother Tina Knowles previously said the accusation that her daughter was paid for her endorsement is a 'lie' and that Beyonce also paid for the flights for herself and her team to and from the event. It's not the first time that Trump has targeted Beyonce and other celebrities over their alleged 'illegal campaign donations' late at night. The president lashed out at the Lemonade singer as well as Bruce Springsteen and Bono in a 2 a.m. Truth Social post on May 19. In another pair of posts shortly after 1 a.m. while still in Scotland, Trump threatened NBC and ABC, and suggested that networks he believes are 'political pawns for the Democrat Party' should be stripped of their licenses to broadcast. 'It has become so outrageous that, in my opinion, their licenses could, and should, be revoked! MAGA,' he wrote Trump has also routinely used threats of legal action to threaten media outlets, publishers and journalists over what he perceives as antagonistic coverage. Following lawsuits against the networks during his campaign, Trump reached massive financial settlements with both ABC News and CBS News, sparking fears among press freedom advocates. Such fears have not been allayed, after the president this week filed a $10 billion lawsuit against Rupert Murdoch, The Wall Street Journal and its parent companies, as well as two journalists, following the newspaper's publication of the president's alleged birthday letter to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. That suit came fresh of the back of a $16 million settlement with Paramount for a lawsuit concerning the editing of an episode of 60 Minutes interview with Harris, which the president claimed was unfair to his campaign.
