Penny Wong in Washington for key talks amid US alliance concerns

The Australian20 hours ago
Australia's chief diplomat has touched down in Washington for a key meeting with her Quad counterparts as the Trump administration looks to ramp up pressure on China.
The Quad, made up of Australia, India, Japan and the US, is a partnership broadly seen as a check on China's economic and military might.
'Fantastic to arrive in Washington DC ahead of the Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting,' Foreign Minister Penny Wong posted on social media, along with a photo of her and Australian ambassador Kevin Rudd.
'Thank you (State Secretary Marco Rubio) for hosting our second meeting in six months.
'Looking forward to discussing how we continue to support a peaceful, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific.'
The meeting comes as pressure mounts on the Albanese government to bolster Australia's alliance with the US.
Six months have passed since Donald Trump's inauguration and Anthony Albanese is yet to secure an in-person meeting with the US President.
Australian producers have been slugged with tariffs on most exports to the US, including duties of up to 50 per cent on steel and aluminium, and doubts loom large about the Trump administration's commitment to AUKUS after it launched a snap review of the defence pact.
The Albanese government has also refused to budge after Washington's call to hike defence spending to 3.5 per cent of GDP amid alarm over China's military build-up.
Unless the Prime Minister books a Washington trip, his next most-likely opportunity to meet Mr Trump is at the Quad leaders summit tipped for September.
In a statement announcing the trip on Sunday, Senator Wong said the US 'is our closest ally and principal strategic partner'.
'Our alliance contributes to the peace, prosperity and stability of our countries and the region we share,' she said.
'We will continue to work together to further our important economic and security partnership and advance our mutual interests.'

Former US president Joe Biden was last year caught on a hot mic telling his fellow Quad leaders that China was 'testing' them, giving a rare glimpse into the candid nature of talks between some of the region's key players.
'We believe (Chinese President) Xi Jinping is looking to focus on domestic economic challenges and minimise the turbulence in China's diplomatic relationships, and he's also looking to buy himself some diplomatic space, in my view, to aggressively pursue China's interest,' Mr Biden said.
'China continues to behave aggressively, testing us all across the region, and it's true in the South China Sea, the East China Sea, South China, South Asia and the Taiwan Straits.
'It's true across the scope of our relationship, including on economic and technology issues.'
Mr Biden's bluntness was a stark contrast to how other Quad leaders have tried to frame the strategic four-way dialogue, often deflecting suggestions that it exists to counter China.
The hawkish approach to Beijing has been adopted by the Trump administration, with US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth earlier this month warning of an 'imminent' threat to the Indo Pacific.
Mr Hegseth said China could invade Taiwan as early as 2027.

Transgender swimmer Lia Thomas stripped of titles after Donald Trump order

Transgender swimming champion Lia Thomas will be stripped of her University of Pennsylvania swimming titles after the Ivy League college on Tuesday bowed to pressure from the Trump administration. The prestigious university will also issue formal apologies to every biological female competitor who lost out to a transgender competitor following an investigation by the Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR), The New York Post reports. The investigation found the University violated Title IX by 'allowing a male to compete in female athletic programs and occupy female-only intimate facilities'. Title IX is a civil rights law introduced in 1972 that prohibits sex-based discrimination in any education or athletic setting. The department opened its investigation in February after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning transgender girls and women from participating in girls' and women's sports. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon celebrated the university's decision in a statement released on Tuesday. 'Today's resolution agreement with UPenn is yet another example of the Trump effect in action,' she said. 'Thanks to the leadership of President Trump, UPenn has agreed both to apologise for its past Title IX violations and to ensure that women's sports are protected at the University for future generations of female athletes.' The resolution agreement signed by the university will require it to undertake a host of additional actions, including adopting 'biology-based definitions for 'male' and 'female' under Title IX' and issuing a public statement that it will no longer allow biological men to compete in female athletic programs or occupy women-only locker rooms. The University of Pennsylvania has agreed to restore all individual Division I swimming records and titles to female athletes who lost out to Thomas. The 26-year-old in March, 2022, became the first transgender athlete to win the highest level of NCAA title. She also won several other swim meet events in college-level competitions where her name will now be wiped from history. The record times she set in 500m freestyle and 200m freestyle will also no longer be recognised. The decision was cheered by athletes who were impacted by the inclusion of trans athletes in women's sports in recent years. 'As a former UPenn swimmer who had to compete against and share a locker room with a male athlete, I am deeply grateful to the Trump Administration for refusing to back down on protecting women and girls and restoring our rightful accolades. I am also pleased that my alma mater has finally agreed to take not only the lawful path, but the honourable one,' said Paula Scanlan, a former University of Pennsylvania swimmer. Riley Gaines, a former University of Kentucky swimmer who has been outspoken on the issue, said, 'It is my hope that today demonstrates to educational institutions that they will no longer be allowed to trample upon women's civil rights, and renews hope in every female athlete that their country's highest leadership will not relent until they have the dignity, safety, and fairness they deserve.' Trump in February said he signed the executive order to stop 'a war on women's sports'. 'We are putting every school receiving taxpayer dollars on notice that if you let men take over women's sports teams or invade your locker rooms, you will be investigated for violations of Title IX and risk your federal funding. There will be no federal funding,' he said.

Australian retail spending weak despite RBA rate cut

Australians are spending a little more at the shops after the Reserve Bank of Australia cut interest rates in May, but it was not the boost to spending that experts were hoping for. Retail sales jumped 0.2 per cent in May following a disappointing April when sales fell by 0.1 per cent despite two long weekends in the period. Oxford Economics Australia head of economic research and global trade Harry Murphy Cruise said households remained pessimistic and it was weighing on sales. 'For households, the uncertainty of global events and the ghosts of inflation past are trumping the good news in the labour market,' he said. 'Unemployment remains remarkably low, with soaring job vacancies suggesting workers can remain confident that good news will continue. 'But the shadow of tariffs, the slowdown in China, and years of price rises eroding real disposable incomes are keeping households' wallets firmly closed.' Mr Murphy Cruise said Wednesday's results showed households needed more convincing via rate cuts before they lifted spending. 'Today's data is another notch in the column to cut rates when the RBA meets next week,' he said. ABS head of business statistics Robert Ewing said spending remained weak, with the jump on the back of clothing purchases. 'Retail spending was otherwise restrained this month, with a drop in food-related spending and flat results across household goods,' he said. Clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing rallied 2.9 per cent and department stores were up 2.6 per cent, but they were the only industries to rise, although both were off the back of large falls in April. 'Clothing retailers and department stores were boosted by people buying winter clothes, having held off on those purchases with the warmer-than-usual weather last month,' Mr Ewing said. While there was a bounce in clothing retailing, food-related spending fell for the first time this year. Food retailing went backwards 0.4 per cent for the month, while spending in cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services came in flat. The weaker-than-expected results came as experts said retail growth would be about 0.5 per cent on the back of a rate cut in May.
