Naver Webtoon to launch new short-form video service
Naver Webtoon is set to launch a new short-form video service called Cuts, designed to offer a new webtoon experience.
On Monday, the company unveiled Cuts via a special episode of the hit series "My Daughter Is a Zombie." With the film adaptation of "My Daughter Is a Zombie" slated to premiere Wednesday, the episode doubled as a cross-promotional effort, featuring characters from the webtoon teasing the movie while introducing the new Cuts platform.
According to the webtoon episode, Naver Webtoon will debut 'A Day in the Life of Ms. Kim Ae-yong' (translated), a slice-of-life comedy starring Ae-yong, the feline character from "My Daughter Is a Zombie," exclusively on Cuts. The series will follow the daily lives of the webtoon's family members, with the cat as the series' main protagonist. Additional original series by popular webtoon creators are also in the pipeline for the platform.
Slated to roll out in September, Cuts marks a shift from the traditional vertical-scroll webtoon format by offering webtoon series as short-form video content.
The move follows Naver Webtoon's earlier foray into short-form with the New & Hot feature launched in May on its North American platform. New & Hot focused on recaps of existing webtoons in a short-form format, whereas the upcoming Korean launch will blend both recap content and exclusive original productions.
Cuts arrives as Generation Z and young Millennial audiences — the core consumers of webtoons — increasingly turn to short-form video as their medium of choice. According to the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family's 2024 Youth Media Usage and Harmful Environment Survey released in April, 94 percent of Korean students from grades 4 to 6 in elementary school, as well as middle and high schoolers, reported that they consumed short-form content.
In April, Kakao Entertainment also stepped into the format, launching Helix Shorts, which features AI-generated videos designed to promote webtoons on Kakao Page.

Park Chan-wook's ‘No Other Choice' to open this year's Busan International Film Festival
Venice-bound black comedy to kick off Korea's top film event on Sept. 17 Park Chan-wook's latest film, "No Other Choice," will open the 30th Busan International Film Festival on Sept. 17, festival organizers announced Monday. The black comedy marks Park's return to feature filmmaking three years after "Decision to Leave." Based on Donald Westlake's 1996 novel "The Ax," the film follows a laid-off middle-aged man who begins eliminating rival job seekers in a desperate bid to secure employment and support his family. Park reportedly spent 17 years developing the screenplay, which he described as a 'long-awaited passion project' during an appearance at BIFF in 2019. The film wrapped production in January. "No Other Choice" is set to make its world premiere later this month in Venice, where it will compete for the Golden Lion. It is the first Korean title to screen in the festival's main competition since Kim Ki-duk's "Pieta" took home the top prize in 2012. Following its Korean premiere in Busan, the film is slated for domestic release via CJ ENM later in the same month. Lead actor Lee Byung-hun will host the BIFF opening ceremony ― marking the first time for a male actor to do so solo. Lee has maintained a long-standing relationship with the festival, dating back to his first appearance in 2003. BIFF director Jung Hanseok voiced high hopes for "No Other Choice" as the festival opener. 'I sincerely hope the inclusion of Park's new film will spark renewed global interest in Korean cinema,' he said in a statement. This year's festival marks a historic shift as BIFF launches its first official competition after decades as a noncompetitive event. Fourteen Asian titles will compete for five awards. Total programming expands to approximately 240 films, up from last year's 224 entries, as organizers aim to restore the event's prepandemic scale. The 30th Busan International Film Festival runs Sept. 17–26 at venues throughout Busan, with the Busan Cinema Center serving as its main hub.

Day6 to mark decade-long career with concert, album
Day6 shared its plans to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its debut via a video clip on Monday. It is planning to roll out fourth full album 'The Decade' on Sept. 5 after hosting a live show of the same title at Goyang Sports Complex in Gyeonggi Province on Aug. 30-31. The group will be the first-ever Korean guitar band to hold a standalone concert at the venue. This marks another historic step for the quartet which has been pushing the envelope for a Korean band taking over major concert venues in Korea: Inspire Arena, Gocheok Sky Dome and KSPO Dome. Its May gig at the last venue, concluding an international tour, drew 96,000 fans combined through six shows. The LP will follow a year after its ninth EP 'Band Aid' and close to six years since its previous LP 'The Book of US: Entropy.'

LA designates Aug. 1 'KCON Day'
World's largest K-pop festival recognized for cultural, social and economic contributions Los Angeles has officially designated Aug. 1 as 'KCON Day,' honoring the world's largest K-pop fan and artist festival for its impact on the city's culture and economy, the event host CJ ENM said Sunday. This marks the first time in KCON's 14-year history that it has received formal recognition from the city government. Four LA City Council members — John Lee, Katy Yaroslavsky, Curren Price and Heather Hutt — co-sponsored the resolution, citing the event's decadelong impact on LA's culture, landscape, tourism and economy. First launched in Irvine, California, in 2012, KCON has grown into the largest global gathering of K-pop fans and artists. With over 100,000 fans participating annually, it has played a pioneering role in promoting Korean culture globally. Lee praised the festival's influence, stating that KCON has "played a central role in promoting global pop culture" and "provides LA residents and visitors a special chance to experience Korean music, food, fashion and technology fully," according to CJ ENM. CJ ENM said the recognition highlights the growing influence of Korean culture, lifestyle and brand influence — driven especially by K-pop — in the world's largest music market. "The Korean American community and Korean culture are at the heart of what makes Los Angeles one of the most creative, influential and dynamic cities in the world," said Yaroslavsky, who represents western Koreatown. Last year's KCON LA, which was broadcast live on The CW Network, boasted 5.9 million fans between the festival and digital streaming. This year, the event was streamed live via the Amazon Music channel on Prime Video and Twitch.
