Samsung opens 2025 call for black-owned ICT SMMEs to join programme

Samsung in collaboration with the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC) has opened its third call, inviting all suitable, black-owned ICT and Service Centre SMMEs to apply for participation in this year's Equity Equivalent Investment Programme (EEIP) for Enterprise Development (ED). Samsung's R280-million worth EEIP, which was launched in 2019, has managed to demonstrate considerable success since its inception. In its six years of sustained success, this year represents the 3rd edition of the programme and seeks to continue making a measurable difference to the socio-economic development of black South Africans. This year's call follows two successful cycles and forms part of Samsung's broader commitment to the ICT sector, SMME development and the government's Vision 2030. Importantly, this transformative SMME Development programme aims to empower black-owned ICT and Service Centre enterprises; while also ensuring that Samsung fulfils its contractual obligations to the DTIC. Local small businesses in the ICT and Service Centre space have an opportunity to take their businesses to new heights with the Samsung EEIP. Nicky Beukes, Samsung EEIP Project Manager said: 'This programme has in the last few years seen great success and has also had a positive impact in the lives of entrepreneurs in the ICT space. As part of our transformation objectives, our EEIP programme continues to contribute to the sustainable development goals of the National Development Plan (NDP).' Importantly, through Samsung's collaboration with the DTIC – these partners remain committed to making a positive contribution to broader economic growth and, to continue playing a significant role in both job creation as well as sustainable entrepreneurship opportunities within South Africa. Beukes added: 'And together with the DTIC, we have in the last few years re-affirmed our commitment to ICT development and economic transformation which are aligned to South Africa's Vision 2030. This third edition of EEIP and its success to date, is a clear indication that Samsung's significant investment in SMME development is yielding tangible results.' This third, consecutive call to all black-owned SMEs in the ICT and Service Centre space across South Africa is a great opportunity for the country's ICT SMMEs to grow and shape the future of their businesses through this Samsung ED Programme.

'There's a place for you in the EFF': Malema tells Mkhwanazi after SAPS corruption allegations

EFF leader Julius Malema has offered KZN police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi a political home should he be axed for exposing alleged corruption within the SAPS and judiciary. Image: X/EFF The door is open for KwaZulu-Natal provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi to join the EFF if he is fired from his position within the SAPS. That's the invitation made by the red berets' leader, Julius Malema, to the top cop. Malema has thrown his support behind Mkhwanazi, who made damning allegations of corruption and collusion among senior SAPS officials, the judiciary, and criminal syndicates. An ad hoc portfolio committee, which the EFF is part of, has been established in Parliament to investigate the claims. This comes after Police Minister Senzo Mchunu was placed on special leave by President Cyril Ramaphosa, following the allegations made by Mkhwanazi that top police officials are involved in corruption. Ramaphosa has since appointed Wits University law professor Firoz Cachalia as acting police minister, effective August 1, and established a judicial commission of inquiry into the allegations. Addressing thousands of supporters at the party's 12th anniversary rally on Saturday at the Khayelitsha Rugby Stadium in the Western Cape, Malema hailed Mkhwanazi as a hero. 'We say to Mkhwanazi, do not be shaken, because if they fire you, there's a position for you in the EFF so that you can continue to fight corruption in South Africa,' said Malema. Malema said the ad hoc committee must investigate all those implicated in the allegations. 'That ad hoc committee is going to investigate all the allegations levelled by Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, and every other relevant piece of information that exists in society must come to Parliament,' he said. The red berets' leader also called on more police officials to fight crime syndicates and drugs in communities. 'We want the people of Mitchells Plain to come to Parliament and tell us who the drug lords are, and who is protecting them, because we need to start fighting drugs.' Malema also called for action in communities grappling with gun violence. 'We want to know where the guns come from in the Cape Flats, in Khayelitsha. You, the people, know the truth. This is the time, this is the platform to expose the rot. Do not be scared,' he said. 'The killing of our children must be stopped now. Mkhwanazi opened the way, and we must join him to restore peace and order in South Africa.' IOL Politics

Government approves R94. 8bn guarantee to bolster Transnet's finances

This decision made on Friday comes as a part of the government's ongoing efforts to support Transnet's operational stability amid mounting challenges posed by credit downgrades and economic volatility. The government has approved an additional R48.6 billion guarantee for Transnet, ensuring that the entity can cover all debt redemptions over the next five years and maintain adequate liquidity levels. This decision made on Friday comes as a part of the government's ongoing efforts to support Transnet's operational stability amid mounting challenges posed by credit downgrades and economic volatility. The newly approved R48.6bn guarantee follows an earlier allocation in May, which saw the government approving R51bn in guarantees, including R41bn aimed at funding requirements for the 2025/26-2026/27 fiscal years and R10bn designated for liquidity management purposes. The total financial backing for Transnet now amounts to R94.8bn, what the Department of Transport said was a testament to the government's commitment to restoring the financial health of the embattled entity. Transnet, which plays a crucial role in the logistical backbone of the country, has been grappling with operational inefficiencies and financial strain exacerbated by credit rating downgrades. These downgrades have not only affected the company's access to capital but have also heightened the risk associated with its existing debt obligations. Recognising these challenges, the government has allocated an additional R46.2bn to mitigate the risks from potential further negative credit actions, thereby seeking to safeguard the company's financial future. In her announcement last month, Transport Minister Barbara Creecy indicated that the government was committed to working closely with Transnet to ensure both operational and financial improvements. This initiative is part of a broader strategy aimed at accelerating reforms within the logistics sector, which includes encouraging private sector participation to enhance efficiency and productivity. This latest financial intervention is critical in ensuring that Transnet can continue to operate effectively while implementing necessary reforms. The government's steadfast support reflects its recognition of the vital role Transnet plays in South Africa's economy, responsible for moving goods across vast distances and supporting numerous industries.
