ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The family of Avesta Yousuf, who fell into an Erbil river in April, plan to continue looking for her as civil defense teams wrap up their three-month search on Saturday.
'After the completion of the civil defense teams' mission, we will remain and continue searching,' said Avesta's uncle Fakhreddin.
Avesta, 27, fell into the Mergasor River in Soran district, around 132 kilometers north of Erbil, while on a picnic with her family on April 5. She had reportedly jumped into the water to save her brother who had fallen in. He survived, but Avesta was swept away by the current.
In June, Karwan Mirawdali, director of Soran Civil Defense, told Rudaw they would end their search on July 5 and present a final report to the relevant authorities.
Search efforts intensified on the last day, Saturday, with more than 100 personnel deployed around the river, using several techniques to locate Avesta, according to Rudaw's correspondent on the ground. The search will continue until 7:00 pm when local officials will hold a press conference.
Avesta's uncle said the family intends to perform a funeral prayer in absentia for her on Saturday.
'As respect for the effort and hardship that the people of Shanidar and that area have had, we want to convey our thanks and appreciation and for them to participate with us in the prayer,' he said.
They also plan to hold a funeral in Erbil but the date has not been set.
The Kurdistan Region's lakes and rivers draw crowds during the hot summers, yet they tragically claim lives every year due to drownings. Erbil's Civil Defence Directorate has attributed the fatal accidents to poor swimming skills, unfamiliarity with the terrain, dangerously cold water temperatures and a lack of proper gear like life jackets and inflatables.

Baghdad says ‘unacceptable' for KRG to blame drone attacks on PMF

Also in Iraq KRG accuses Baghdad of evading responsibility on drone attacks Sadr reaffirms boycott of Iraqi election Kurdish farmer disappears in Kirkuk, ISIS suspected Iraq installs speed cameras, records 10,000 violations in first day A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Iraqi government on Saturday said it was 'unacceptable' for Erbil to accuse the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF, or Hashd al-Shaabi) of being complicit in a string of drone attacks in the Kurdistan Region. 'The accusation issued by the Ministry of Interior in the Kurdistan Regional Government [KRG] against an official Iraqi security institution is unacceptable, condemned, and impermissible under any pretext, especially since it was issued in the absence of evidence,' the prime minister's spokesperson Sabah al-Numan said in a statement. On Friday, the KRG's Interior Ministry blamed the PMF for recent drone attacks that it said were carried out 'with the intention of creating chaos.' It called on Baghdad to bring the perpetrators to account. Baghdad said that such accusations risk undermining the country's stability and instead urged 'cooperation and coordination through official channels.' Multiple explosive-laden drones have crashed or been downed in the Kurdistan Region since a US-brokered ceasefire between Iran and Israel went into effect on June 24. Most recently, a drone was intercepted near Erbil International Airport on Thursday, but 'did not cause any casualties or material damage,' said the Directorate General of Counter Terrorism (CTD), which is part of the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC). Iraqi militia groups have denied involvement and blamed the Islamic State (ISIS). During the 12-day Iran-Israel war, numerous drones and rockets flew through the airspace of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. Several of them fell or were intercepted.

KRG accuses Baghdad of evading responsibility on drone attacks

Also in Iraq Baghdad says 'unacceptable' for KRG to blame drone attacks on PMF Sadr reaffirms boycott of Iraqi election Kurdish farmer disappears in Kirkuk, ISIS suspected Iraq installs speed cameras, records 10,000 violations in first day A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Interior Ministry of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on Saturday accused Baghdad of evading its responsibility to investigate and prevent repeated drone attacks in the Kurdistan Region. "There is an expectation from the relevant parties of the federal government that when there are threats against the Kurdistan Region or any other area of Iraq, necessary measures should be taken to reveal the truth and prevent the recurrence of threats and punish the perpetrators. However, unfortunately, we feel there is a kind of cover-up and evasion of responsibility regarding those security breaches that are carried out against the Kurdistan Region,' the ministry said in a statement. Multiple explosive-laden drones have crashed or been downed in the Kurdistan Region since a US-brokered ceasefire between Iran and Israel went into effect on June 24. No group has claimed responsibility. On Friday, the KRG's Interior Ministry said the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF, or Hashd al-Shaabi) were complicit in the attacks. The Iraqi government responded on Saturday, saying such accusations against a federal force were 'unacceptable.' Iraqi militia groups have denied involvement and blamed the Islamic State (ISIS). In its statement on Saturday, the KRG's Interior Ministry said that in the past Baghdad has never taken action against the perpetrators of drone and missile attacks on its territory. 'Although the direction and source of the missiles and drones were clear, and several times joint committees were formed between the regional government and the federal government to reveal the truth, unfortunately again neither were the results of the investigations disclosed to the public opinion, nor was anyone punished for those apparent crimes and illegal actions, and no measures were taken against any party,' it said. Iran and Iran-backed Iraqi militia groups have carried out multiple attacks on targets in the Kurdistan Region in recent years. The Interior Ministry said that safeguarding people's lives and national sovereignty is the responsibility of both the federal and regional governments, regardless of political differences.

Turkey detains three opposition mayors

Also in Turkey Poll shows 65 percent support for Turkey-PKK peace Hope for peace grows with new library in Turkey's Hakkari New superstition emerges in Diyarbakir AKP lawmaker labels Kurdistan Region's role in PKK disarmament 'very important' A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Turkish authorities on Saturday detained three mayors as part of an investigation into corruption, state media reported. All three are members of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP). The mayors of the southern cities of Antalya and Adana, as well as the southeastern Kurdish city of Adiyaman (Semsur) were arrested on charges of fixing tenders through bribing mayors and senior municipal executives, according to the state-owned Anadolu Agency. 'This morning, I was detained from my house in Ankara. I am being taken to Istanbul,' Adiyaman Mayor Abdurrahman Tutdere said on X. Zeydan Karalar, mayor of Adana, vowed to 'continue the struggle' after he was detained. The arrests are part of a wider investigation into alleged graft within CHP-led administrations, according to Anadolu. Ankara mayor and CHP strongman Mansur Yavas blasted the arrests as a targeted campaign against the party. 'In a system where the law is bent and twisted according to politics, where justice is applied for one segment and ignored for another, no one should expect us to trust the rule of law or believe in justice,' he said on X. 'We will not bow to injustice, unlawfulness, and political operations.' In Turkey's 2024 municipal elections, Karalar received 46.7 percent of the vote, Tutdere scored 49.7 percent, and Antalya's Muhittin Bocek took 71.4 percent. The practice of dismissing elected officials has been ongoing for years. Dozens of mainly Kurdish mayors have been removed from their posts since 2016 and sentenced on terrorism-related charges for alleged ties to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which Ankara has designated a terrorist organization. More recently, the AKP-led government has cracked down on CHP and other opposition mayors, detaining them largely on cases of alleged corruption. On Thursday, a raid sparked by an alleged corruption case at the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality - a key CHP bastion - resulted in the arrests of 60 people, including former Izmir mayor Tunc Soyer and the head of CHP's Izmir branch Senol Aslanoglu. In March, Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was sacked from his position on charges of corruption. Considered the main rival of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the upcoming 2028 elections, his arrest sparked Turkey's worst unrest in a decade, which in turn led to a massive crackdown on protests. The dismissed mayors are replaced with state-appointed trustees.
