Briefly describe your role and responsibilities and how long you have worked with your company.
My current role is Group Sustainability Director for LION. LION operates primarily in Australia, but we are also the largest brewer in New Zealand. In addition, we have a significant craft beer presence in the United States, including New Belgium Brewery and Bell's Brewery. Our US craft beer network spans four operational sites: Bell's Brewery in Michigan; New Belgium's breweries in Fort Collins, Colorado; Asheville, North Carolina; and our newest site in Daleville, Virginia. Beyond brewing, we also operate wineries on the west coast and New Zealand.
I've been with LION for around six and a half years. I initially joined as Environment Director, and after three years, I transitioned into the Sustainability Director role. My responsibilities now focus on leading LION's overall sustainability strategy, which we divide into three pillars—Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG)—to maintain clarity and focus. My role is to set the strategy across these pillars and ensure its successful implementation.
Before joining LION, I worked across a range of carbon intensive industries, including aviation, chemicals, steel, and aluminum. This diverse background has been invaluable in bringing a fresh perspective to challenges such as decarbonization, water stewardship, and advancing the circular economy within the brewing industry.
I'm a chemical engineer by background, and the first half of my career was centered on engineering and management roles. My first dedicated sustainability role was at Qantas, where I worked for six years before joining LION.
How has the company's sustainability program evolved over the years, and what are your specific priorities for 2025?
When I first joined, our sustainability strategy was organized into distinct areas of focus. On the environmental side, it centered around four key pillars: carbon, water, packaging (within the broader circular economy), and environmental risk management. Socially, our priorities included responsible consumption—our most material issue as an alcohol producer—along with community investment and reconciliation work with Australia's First Nations people. We've also focused on broader human rights initiatives, which naturally tie into responsible sourcing. Governance underpins all of this, with a growing emphasis on climate reporting, risk management, and policy development, particularly as new disclosure requirements emerge globally.
Most recently, we've made significant progress. For example, on carbon, we have science-based targets cascaded from our parent company, Kirin, in Japan. In Australia, we've already exceeded our 2030 Scope 1 and 2 targets, achieving a 70% reduction against our 2019 baseline. This success is largely due to investments in renewable electricity, including agreements to supply 100% renewable power to our Australian operations. In New Zealand, we have a credible pathway to meet our 2030 target of a 55% reduction, but the U.S. presents more challenges. Access to renewable energy agreements there is more complex, so identifying opportunities to secure wind and solar power for our U.S. breweries will be a major focus over the next few years.
On water stewardship, we're on track to achieve a 2.4L/L water efficiency target at our large breweries in water-stressed regions—Brisbane, Sydney, and Launceston—by next year. This has been enabled by the installation of a new reverse osmosis water recycling plant at Tooheys in Sydney that matches our water recycling operations at XXXX Brewery in Brisbane.
For packaging, we're making strong progress in increasing recycled content. On average, our packaging contained over 70% recycled material last year. Some of our glass bottles have exceeded 80% recycled content, and aluminum cans exceed 50%. Working closely with our suppliers, we're continuing to reduce demand for virgin materials and the carbon intensity of packaging. For instance, using recycled glass reduces energy consumption in glass furnaces, especially when combined with innovations like oxygen injection and cullet pre-heating, which has the potential halve furnace energy use.
Looking ahead to 2025, we're shifting focus from discrete efforts on carbon, water, and circular economy to integrated projects that deliver impact across multiple pillars simultaneously. To truly accelerate progress, we need to move beyond individual efforts and start collaborating more deeply across the value chain.
Our suppliers make up roughly 80% of a beer's carbon footprint, so working collectively with them is essential. A great example is the Australian Climate Leaders Coalition's Scope 3 Roadmap project, where we brought key players together—packaging suppliers, maltsters, logistics providers, and customers. Instead of relying on generic database figures, we gathered real carbon emissions data directly from our partners. It wasn't easy—there is a natural reluctance to share sensitive data—but we addressed concerns by aggregating where needed and building trust.
With accurate data, we could have meaningful discussions about emissions reductions—whether that's increasing recycled content in packaging, using electric trucks, or working with farmers on regenerative agriculture. This project demonstrated the power of collaboration and the need to take the blinkers off. Too often, companies pursue the same targets independently, missing opportunities to work together.
In 2025, we'll focus on fostering more of these 'pre-competitive' collaborations, where competitors and partners align on shared challenges. There's precedent for this—like the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil —where companies worked together to address deforestation. We're out of time, and we can't afford to tackle these issues alone. Guardrails are needed to ensure compliance with competition laws, but these non-competitive conversations are critical to accelerating change.
A great example of this approach is the work we're exploring to support the resilience of the Great Barrier Reef. Projects like this demonstrate how we can simultaneously address nature conservation and sustainability challenges across the value chain.
Ultimately, I find this deeply exciting. There's so much potential when we work together. The limits of going it alone are now clear, but when we take collective action, we can make a much bigger impact on the climate, circularity, and beyond.

Alkan Air will be providing air ambulance services to Yukoners for the next ten years, thanks to a new contract with the Yukon government. The awarding of the contract was announced on July 29. It's a $157-million contract, valued at around $15.7 million a year. Alkan Air has been doing medevac flights in the territory for decades, according to Alkan Air chief executive officer Lacia Kinnear, but this is the first time the company has been awarded a ten-year contract with the government. Alkan Air provides medevac flights from rural Yukon to Whitehorse, as well as from Whitehorse to southern cities like Vancouver and Calgary. The length of the contract will be instrumental in ensuring longevity and continuity of service in the Yukon, Kinnear said. She said other jurisdictions like the Northwest Territories and British Columbia have been awarding 10-year contracts to their respective air ambulance providers. 'We're really grateful that government has continued with that trend, because it's definitely the best way to ensure consistent and quality service for Yukoners,' Kinnear said. The contract, according to the press release, will begin April 1, 2026, as the current contract with Alkan Air is set to expire on March 31, 2026. There is the option for the contract to be extended by an additional two years. As part of the contract, Alkan Air will continue to provide 24/7 air ambulance coverage to the territory. 'We'll be introducing two new planes to our fleet, not brand new, but new to the Yukon, and they will have all brand new interiors, as well as new internal, the med equipment and the inside will all be brand new,' Kinnear told the News over the phone on July 30. The contract will also see continued partnership with the Yukon First Nation Air Leasing Limited Partnership, according to Kinnear. The partnership is composed of eight First Nations development corporations, who will help Alkan Air purchase and lease the new aircraft required for this contract, according to a Yukon government press release. There are two new planes being introduced to the Yukon as part of this contract, said Kinnear. She said that Alkan Air will own 25 per cent of the new planes and the Yukon First Nation Air Leasing Limited Partnership will own 75 per cent. 'This will help to ensure that the benefits of this work in this contract are shared, through both training, employment opportunities, but also a shared path towards economic reconciliation and by bringing local First Nations into the contract and economic opportunities within the territory,' Kinnear said. 'There is the goal of hiring both First Nation pilots, First Nation AMEs, but also recognizing and working with our First Nation partners about what is the pathway to make sure that those people are in those programs so that we can eventually hire them into this contract,' Kinnear said. AME refers to aircraft mechanical engineer. The territory has seen an increase in demand for air ambulance service in the past years, according to the Yukon government's press release. In 2020, 988 patients were transported via air ambulance in the Yukon; in 2024, that number was 1,489. Kinnear said the new contract allows Alkan Air to meet that increase. The provisions include the number of pilots and the number of mechanical engineers that Alkan Air is able to employ to work on aircraft to ensure work is done as needed and on schedule. The contract also has a provision that there can be an additional aircraft added at some point in the contract. She said that opportunity is forward thinking in case demand increases. NDP government gives brush off to forestry industry's pragmatic, made-in-B.C. solutions

VICTORIA — The Council of Forest Industries wrote a letter to the New Democrats earlier this month, outlining more than a dozen proposals to rescue a struggling industry. 'B.C.'s forest industry is in crisis,' wrote COFI President Kim Haakstad in the July 14 letter to Forests Minister Ravi Parmar. 'Fibre availability is at historic lows, permitting systems are gridlocked, and investment is retreating in the face of prolonged uncertainty. The risk is not gradual decline — but accelerated facility closures, job losses, and the permanent erosion of forest industry capacity.' Haakstad was responding to Premier David Eby's announcement of a 'major project' to restore the industry in a speech to this year's COFI's convention. Plus, the premier has mandated Parmar to boost the annual timber harvest to 45 million cubic metres, up 50 per cent over last year's 30 million. To that end the COFI president offered 'pragmatic actions' to address problems of regulatory overload, paralysis in issuing cutting permits, bottlenecks in consultations with First Nations, inefficiencies in timber sales, and friction among too many ministries and agencies with oversight of forestry. She called for a pause on issuing new regulations, policies, reviews, or other changes 'that don't directly contribute to the path to 45 million cubic metres.' Instead, New Democrats should concentrate on 'implementing already announced actions effectively and simply.' Second, the government should expedite the promised makeover of the troubled B.C. Timber Sales agency. Third, the ministry should recruit a team of retired managers and officials to clear up the backlog in permitting and accelerate approval of new ones. Another proposal on the list called for stepping up funding for the Forest Enhancement Society, allowing it to do more thinning, fire protection and salvage in the forests. At the same time the government should fast track harvesting of insect-damaged and fire ravaged stands. 'These steps are not flashy,' wrote Haakstad. 'But they would send a serious signal to industry that government understands the urgency and core challenges faced today.' They would also protect jobs, restore the flow of fibre to industry, send encouraging signals to investors and create time and space for longer-term reforms. 'The forest sector fully supports the shift toward a more efficient, inclusive, and sustainable system,' she wrote in conclusion. 'But that future cannot be built on a collapsing foundation.' 'These interim actions are not about preserving the status quo. They are about keeping the doors open long enough to build what comes next together.' I asked the government last week for a response to the proposals set out in the COFI letter. I got back a general statement from Parmar, which pretty much brushed aside the notion of a crisis in the industry. 'B.C. is the second-largest exporter of softwood lumber in the world,' it read in part. 'That's a testament to the strength, resilience, and innovation of our forestry workers and communities.' Not that there weren't 'real challenges,' said Parmar. He cited 'unfair and rising softwood lumber duties, shifting market conditions, and the lasting impacts of wildfires, the end of the mountain pine beetle crisis and climate change.' The industry letter had also acknowledged the challenge posed by softwood duties. B.C. got whacked with them again on Friday of last week, with the possibility of more to come. But the focus of the COFI letter was that (as Haakstad put it) 'we really need to focus on what we can control (and) look at what we can do in British Columbia to make sure that we stop managing the decline in forestry and get back to thinking about our competitiveness.' B.C. is rated as the highest-cost jurisdiction for forestry in North America, along with one of the slowest to issue permits and deliver fibre supply into the hands of producers. Parmar, in his perfunctory response to the COFI letter last week, claimed to be 'focused on protecting jobs, supporting communities, and ensuring long-term sustainability. 'I'm working every day with First Nations, industry, and the entire sector to build a forestry future that delivers for people, protects our forests, and drives economic prosperity for generations to come.' This week the minister was back at the blame game, pointing fingers at the U.S. for the latest softwood penalty and at Ottawa for not rescuing B.C. from the tariff squeeze. 'As well, one of the things that I can't control right now, and I don't know if I ever will, is market conditions,' Parmar told Simi Sara on CKNW. 'We can do as much as we can. We can even harvest or, rather, permit 45 million cubic metres over the next year. But if the market conditions don't allow for companies to go in and harvest that and make money, that's an issue.' Those market conditions are shaped by B.C.'s uncompetitive nature, a function of high costs and over regulation. But when asked about permitting, timber sales and other obstacles identified in the COFI letter, the most Parmar would say is 'we need to speed things up.'
