Libya's embassy in Turkey confirms it's closely following case of citizen detained for allegedly filming child without permission

Libya Observer21 hours ago
The Embassy of Libya in Turkey has confirmed that it is closely monitoring the case of the Libyan citizen detained in Istanbul, who is currently under investigation for allegedly filming a Turkish child, as claimed by the child's mother.
According to the embassy's statement, the Consulate General in Istanbul immediately contacted the relevant Turkish authorities upon learning of the incident, in order to follow the details of the case and remain updated on its developments, aiming to ensure due legal process and the protection of the citizen's rights.
The statement noted that the citizen was detained by the Istanbul Public Prosecutor's Office. The consulate's lawyer, in coordination with the lawyer appointed by the Bar Association, has filed three objections before the Fifth Criminal Court of Peace against the detention, all of which were rejected, with the court deciding to uphold the detention.
The embassy also noted that the Public Prosecutor's Office assigned a legal mediation office in an attempt to resolve the issue through reconciliation, as is customary in such cases. However, the complainant refused reconciliation and requested that the case be referred to court. The embassy in Ankara and the Consulate General in Istanbul continue to follow the case closely and are making every effort to resolve the matter and prove the innocence of Libyan citizen Othman Al-Zalouk, seeking his safe return to his family.
Earlier, the Al-Zalouk family confirmed that their son remains in custody, denying having had any contact with either the Libyan Embassy in Ankara or the Consulate in Istanbul. Tags: Turkey

Operator of oil tanker 'Vilamoura' reveals cause of mysterious explosion off Libyan coast

Greek shipping company TMS Tankers has revealed that an explosive device was behind the blast that struck the oil tanker Vilamoura just hours after it departed from Libya's Zueitina port last week. The Vilamoura left the Libyan port of Zueitina on June 27, en route to the Strait of Gibraltar carrying 1 million barrels of crude oil, when it was hit by a mysterious explosion on board that caused large volumes of water to flood the engine room. Greek newspaper Kathimerini reported on Monday that TMS Tankers said preliminary investigation results clearly indicated the explosion—and the resulting cracks in the side shell plating and flooding of the engine room—were caused by an external source: an unidentified explosive device. The company noted that the tanker lost its ability to maneuver after the explosion and the flooding of the engine room, but was towed to Greece for damage assessment. The Vilamoura has since safely arrived at Greece's Laconikos Gulf. Maritime security sources told Reuters last week that a limpet mine may have been the cause of the explosion aboard the Vilamoura. 22 migrants rescued off Zawiya coast as Libya steps up summer patrols

Libyan authorities have intensified maritime patrols amid a surge in summer migration attempts across the Mediterranean. The Ministry of Interior reported the rescue of 22 irregular migrants off the coast of Zawiya late Saturday night. The operation, conducted by the patrol boat Wadi Kaam P300, brought the migrants ashore to Tripoli's Al-Shaab Port, where legal procedures were initiated. They have since been transferred to the Anti-Illegal Immigration Agency. A separate operation the same day saw the rescue of 39 migrants off the eastern coast of Tripoli. Authorities say maritime patrols will continue to be reinforced throughout the summer. News Tagged: illegal migrants rescue

Libyan Crimes Watch: Last June marked dangerous escalation of violations

The Libyan Crimes Watch Organization has reported a sharp escalation in serious human rights violations against civilians across Libya during last June, citing continued arbitrary arrests and extrajudicial killings amid a lack of accountability and failure by authorities to protect human rights. In its monthly report, the organization documented the killing of a civilian in Benghazi, the death of an activist after his arrest in Sorman, and the arbitrary detention of 23 civilians — including children, activists, and foreign nationals — in Sirte, Benghazi, and Ubari. It also reported the discovery of 15 migrant bodies along the shores of Tripoli, Sabratha, and Tobruk. In Benghazi, the group recorded the killing of Murad al-Madhkour by members of the 20/20 Battalion, as well as the arrest of Hussein Aqrira, head of the Dialogue Committee in Ubari. It also highlighted the detention of participants in the 'Sumood Convoy' in Sirte and the prevention of their planned journey to Gaza. The report further documented the recovery of drowned migrant bodies in several locations, including Sabratha and Tobruk, following the sinking of a boat carrying Sudanese migrants. At least 29 individuals remain missing. In Sorman, activist Abdulmonem Al-Marimi was detained by the Internal Security Agency and later died in Tripoli under mysterious circumstances after falling at the premises of the Attorney General. The organization held the 20/20 Battalion and the Internal Security Agencies in both eastern and western Libya responsible for these violations. It called for an end to arbitrary arrests and urged protection for human rights defenders and migrants. It also urged the Attorney General to launch an independent investigation into the arrests and violations connected to the 'Sumood Convoy,' and appealed to the International Criminal Court to reverse its decision to halt investigations in Libya by the end of 2025. The organization called on the UN mission and influential international actors to pressure all Libyan parties to respect fundamental rights and freedoms and to end the prevailing culture of impunity.
