End of an Era? The Lexus IS 500 Ultimate Edition Hints at the Model's Farewell

Auto Blog01-06-2025

The Lexus IS 500 F SPORT Performance Ultimate Edition is here with special features and the same V8 engine. Limited to just 500 units, it could be the last IS.
Lexus is making an already wonderful V8 sports sedan more appealing with a final iteration
The naturally-aspirated V8-powered Lexus IS 500 isn't the quickest sports sedan around, but there are few that look and sound this good. You might be sad to hear that with the introduction of the IS 500 F Sport Performance Ultimate Edition, Lexus could be signaling the end of the road for the venerable IS. The Ultimate Edition retains the IS 500's naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 engine, producing 472 horsepower, unchanged from stock. While Lexus hasn't officially confirmed the IS's discontinuation, the limited-run nature of this model and its debut as a 2025 model year vehicle suggest there may not be a 2026 IS.
How is the IS 500 Ultimate Edition different?
2025 Lexus IS 500 Ultimate Edition
Mechanically, the Ultimate Edition is unchanged from the standard IS 500, retaining the powerful V8 paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive only. The Ultimate Edition retains the handsome body and sporty interior but adds some special touches. It gets a special exterior paint color called Wind, a metallic light gray finish that's probably better looking in person than in photos, where it appears as a variation on the model's Ultra White paint. It also gets 19-inch matte-black BBS wheels, red brake calipers, and special IS 500 Ultimate Edition badging. The cabin features a two-tone red and black colorway, complemented by racy red seatbelts, a numbered 1-of-500 plaque, and unique door scuff plates that signify its special designation.

The 472-horsepower V8 sports sedan will launch to 60 mph from a standstill in the mid-fours, which is properly quick, about the same as the Genesis G70 3.3T. The top trim IS 500 F Sport Performance Premium, gets a 14-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, voice command, configurable gauge cluster, a panoramic view monitor, and a 17-speaker Mark Levinson premium surround sound system with QuantumLogic surround technology. The upholstery features NuLuxe faux leather wrapped over heated and ventilated front seats (19-way power adjustable for the driver), a power moonroof, embossed door trim, and numerous physical controls for audio and climate. One vestige of the previous IS that we could do without is the wonky touchpad, which unfortunately remains in the IS 500.
2022 Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance
When it comes to safety, the IS 500 Sport Performance comes standard with Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 and includes features like pre-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane tracing assist, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The IS 500 also boasts a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA.

Pricing for the 2025 IS 500 F Sport Performance Ultimate Edition has not yet been announced, but the stock IS 500 F SPORT Performance starts at $60,595, while the F SPORT Performance Premium variant begins at $65,095. The Ultimate Edition will, no doubt, exceed that price point. Too bad it won't be offered in some of our favorite colors from the IS 500's palette history, like Flare Yellow and Molten Pearl.
Final thoughts
We don't care if the IS 500 F Sport Performance Ultimate Edition isn't the quickest, most tractable sports sedan around. The IS 500's naturally aspirated V8 offers a refreshing and nostalgic driving experience, as well as an absolutely intoxicating sound, appealing to enthusiasts who love sport and luxury. The Ultimate Edition will be totally worth the extra money, especially since the V8 will likely disappear from the Lexus stable in the next few years.

Your Favorite Classic Honda Just Got Factory Support

It isn't easy getting parts for aging sports cars. Honda is the latest automaker to step up One of the biggest challenges of owning an older car — enthusiast or otherwise — is finding parts that have gone NLA, or No Longer Available. While the aftermarket can usually accommodate, sometimes the results aren't what you'd hoped. Whether it's aesthetics, longevity, functionality, or some combination thereof, there's often no true replacement for the gear the car originally shipped with. If you're a Honda owner, though, your woes may be a thing of the past. Nissan's revolutionary self-driving tech hits Japan's streets Watch More Honda/Acura NSX 2006 Honda S2000. Getting your hands on an OEM radio for your NSX or the proper trim piece for your Integra Type R might become just a little bit easier in the next 365 days or so. Honda has officially launched a pilot program to reproduce heritage car parts, beginning with the first-generation NSX. The initiative, which leverages modern manufacturing and 3D printing, aims to provide brand-new replacement components that were previously unavailable. Future plans reportedly include expanding support to other sporty models like Type R variants and potentially the S2000. Additionally, Honda is even rumored to offer in-house restoration efforts in the near future, too. It's all good news for vintage car enthusiasts. Honda's not the first automaker to offer the service, and the list might surprise you While we're glad Honda's come around, they're late to the party. Similar programs have been going on at competing brands like Nissan, Mazda, and Toyota for years. The Germans, too, have been offering factory-fresh parts for older models for even longer, but brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche focus only on very specific parts for very specific models. When you look at the list, it's almost surprising it took Honda so long to hop on board. 2001 Acura Integra Type R — Source: Acura Some automakers may still be leaving money on the table — but how much? Perhaps the most surprising omission from the list is American automakers. Mopar, Chevy, and Ford will let you browse to find parts for your classic car, but there's no program in place actively manufacturing new old parts. That's surprising, since classic American cars have been in vogue for decades. Other automakers, like Hyundai and Kia, simply don't have many heritage models to look out for. A similar case can be made for Subaru, but we think we'll see something similar from them in the future. With an aging catalog of STI models and niche favorites like the Baja running around, a burgeoning market might appear sooner rather than later. OEMs don't break out independent financial figures from these factory-backed initiatives, so a firm number is nearly impossible to pin down. Honda clearly recognizes a market, or it wouldn't be taking steps to join the club. Also, consider the optics: preserving brand heritage goes a long way for current owners, but also matters to enthusiastic fans of the brand looking in. When you further consider the accoutrements and accessories that some 'classic' brands have spawned (tartan-patterned and Porsche-badged wallets and handbags, anyone?), the revenue could be substantial. 2000 Honda Civic Si — Source: Honda Final thoughts Honda's making things easier for drivers piloting some of the brand's most iconic cars ever, and we'd be crazy not to support that initiative. As the world moves — perhaps more slowly than initially guessed — towards electrification, we're probably not too far from a world where every automaker needs a 'classic' division to support gas-powered and older models. In the meantime, we look forward to the crazy NSX and Type R factory restoration projects that will no doubt eventually surface from Honda HQ. About the Author Steven Paul View Profile

Lexus, Nissan Top 2025 J.D. Power Quality Rankings

The Winners If you're looking for a new car and want to ensure the best quality right off the assembly line you might take a closer look at Lexus and Nissan. The two Japanese automakers topped the 2025 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study – which tallies up what owners have to say about their vehicles during the first 90 days of ownership. Nissan Ariya at the automaker's global headquarters in Japan — Source: Getty The IQS looks at the number of issues owners have experienced – everything from electronic glitches to faulty transmissions – tallied up as 'problems per 100 vehicles, or PP100 in Power-speak. The lower the score the higher the quality. And by that measure, Lexus had a score of 166, making it both the best brand in the luxury category but tops overall. Nissan was surprisingly close behind, at 169 PP100, making it second overall and tops among mainstream brands. And the Losers The list of losers in this year's IQS starts with Ram. Last year's overall winner, the Stellantis truck division tumbled 24 spots in the overall ranking – among the 33 brands covered by the 2025 IQS. With a score of 218, it fell well below the industry average of 192 PP100, largely due to owner complaints about the Ram 1500, which went through a complete makeover for this model year. In general, all-new models, as well as those that went through a major redesign, tended to have more quality problems than carryover vehicles, the IQS revealed. Source: Ram Audi anchored the list, with a score of 269 problems per 100, a 10% increase in owner complaints this year. And Volvo was again second-to-last, at 258 PP100, Infiniti doing only slightly better with a score of 242. Rivian, actually, would have been dead last this year with 274 problems reported by owners. But it wasn't officially rolled into the list 'due to limited data,' said Power in a summary of the 2025 IQS results. Tesla, the biggest of the all-electric brands, was a mixed bag. It also was left out of the formal list since the automaker makes it difficult for Power to track owners in some states and then get them to fill out surveys. Based on the data it did get, however, Tesla had a score of 200. While still well below the industry average, the EV company managed to reduce the number of complaints substantially compared to 2024 when it had a score of 266. Some Surprises While Ram's sharp tumble in the IQS rankings was easily the biggest surprise this year, there were a number of other unexpected findings. That started with Jaguar which this year is the fourth-ranked brand – just behind Korea's Hyundai – with a score of 175 PP100. The British brand has a historical record of quality problems but has been working its way up the J.D. Power charts in recent years. It was ninth in 2024. As for why it's doing so well? Jaguar has slashed its line-up to a few core products – all older models that it has had time to work out the bugs with, according to Power. The challenge will be maintaining quality when Jaguar begins rolling out a new range of EVs over the coming years. 2025 Jaguar F-Pace — Source: Jaguar Then there was Dodge, the Stellantis muscle car brand. It scored the biggest turnaround on the IQS, going from dead last in 2024 to seventh this year. But there's an asterisk here: Dodge was previously dragged down by problems with its little Hornet model. But the Italian SUV wasn't included in the latest study due to a lack of data. What Ticked Off Owners The good news is that traditional, mechanical problems, such as faulty powertrains, have become increasingly uncommon with today's vehicles. These days, high-tech features tend to be the biggest concern for motorists, notably faulty voice control systems. 'While customers do find the larger touchscreens visually appealing,' said Frank Hanley, Power's senior director of auto benchmarking, 'owners find these things to be overly complicated and too distracting to use while driving. By retaining dedicated physical controls for some of these interactions, automakers can alleviate pain points and simplify the overall customer experience.' Source: James Riswick Another source of trouble? Cupholders. There are more than enough in most vehicles today. The problem, owners told Power, is that they're often too small, or not flexible enough to handle the variety of beverage containers passengers bring into their vehicles: juice boxes, soda bottles, Big Gulps and Yetis. 'While it seemed like manufacturers had cupholders figured out,' Power noted, they're struggling to keep up with being able to accommodate all the different shapes and sizes that are increasingly available.' Electrified Vehicles Cause More Problems Conventional hybrids, like the Toyota Prius, have become increasingly common these days, and despite having more complex drivetrains they tend to create only slightly more problems than models running entirely on gasoline, an average 196 PP100 compared to 184, respectively. Tesla Model Y — Source: Tesla More advanced battery-based drivetrains still give motorists headaches, according the IQS. And, for the first time, plug-in hybrids were reported to have more issues – an average 237 problems per 100 vehicles – than pure battery-electric models. The lower score for BEVs, at 212 PP100, largely reflects the improvements made by Tesla this past year, Power reported. The Top Models As for the single best vehicle on the market, at least in terms of initial quality? The Porsche 911 which experienced just 116 problems per 100 according to its owners. 911 GT3 The IQS also breaks out the best models in 22 separate vehicle segments. Of these, General Motors had the most top-ranked products, a total of five, with Ford landing four, Honda another three. Ford was the top-ranked brand, again with four segment winners, including the Super Duty named tops in the Large Heavy Duty Pickup category. Its F-150 had a tie in the Large Light Duty Pickup category with the Chevrolet Silverado. Chevy placed three segment winners, overall. About the Author Paul Eisenstein View Profile

Tuners Are Going To Love Toyota's Latest Overengineered Turbo Engine

Toyota Is Making Combustion Cleaner Toyota has long been claiming that there is no single path to carbon neutrality, arguing that cleaner combustion engines and hybrids need to bridge the gap to electric cars powered by renewable energy. With a back catalog of brilliant engines like the overengineered 2JZ, which is still revered 35 years after its 1JZ foundation was built, Toyota knows what it takes to beat the world's best, and its upcoming 1.5- (black top) and 2.0-liter (red top) four-cylinder engines appear poised to handle the weight of expectation with ease. According to Toyota engineers who spoke with German publication Auto Motor und Sport, the G20E (that's the 2.0-liter) is easily capable of exceeding the 400-450-horsepower figure of the mid-engine GR Yaris M concept: 'With a larger turbocharger, more than 600 hp is easily possible.' Numerous Potentially Imminent Sporty Applications Toyota has recently indicated that its sports cars could go hybrid, and with an engine this small and powerful supporting any electrification, that could be quite an exciting proposition. The MR2 is rumored to return with hybrid power, and a mid-engine sports car with a 600-hp thermal motor being complemented by an electric motor of another couple hundred horsepower could be quite a tantalizing entree to the forthcoming Lexus supercar. Toyota has confirmed that a new Celica is on the way, too, so there are plenty of applications for both new engines. The G16E-GTS turbocharged three-cylinder found in the production GR Yaris and its GR Corolla big brother already delivers in excess of 300 hp, so a detuned G20E (or even its 1.5-liter sibling) could be an immensely reliable – and likely even more fuel-efficient – replacement for both cars. It's also safe to assume that Toyota is considering putting this in the next GR86, since many buyers have clamored for the torque of a turbocharged engine, and if Toyota strengthens it further, it may even have a future in a pickup. Overengineered, Tuner-Friendly Engine Can Be Enlarged Toyota has reportedly been testing the engine in Lexus sedans, so it could be refined enough for a luxury application like the imminently departing IS. What really piques our interest, however, is a comment made by one of the engineers to the German publication: 'We left enough space between the cylinders so that the engine can be bored out considerably.' That's more good news for all the aftermarket tuners who will doubtless begin seeking to extract more power from the G20E the moment they get their grubby paws on it, but it also means that Toyota itself may well enlarge this four-cylinder to provide a smoother experience in cars that may otherwise have been powered by six-cylinder engines. Not that there's any reason to worry in that regard – reports out of Japan claim that, if BMW's B58 is dropped, Mazda will provide the straight-six for the next Supra. Although unconfirmed, this news seems credible since the G20E and its 1.5-liter sibling were not announced in isolation; Mazda and Subaru also presented rotary and boxer prototype powertrains when the G20E was revealed as part of the triarchy's 'Multipathway Approach,' announced almost exactly one year ago. The rush to create evermore efficient combustion engines may well be less frenetic with a collaborative approach to innovation. About the Author Sebastian Cenizo View Profile
