
Australian 'fiasco' ferry ordered to leave Edinburgh
The ship was built at a yard in Finland, but had to be moved to Scotland before winter over concerns it could be damaged by pack ice.A new berth to accommodate the ship, and sister vessel Spirit of Tasmania V, may not be ready until late 2026 or 2027 and the saga has sparked a huge political row in Australia.
The vessel was due to operate in the Bass Strait, between Tasmania and the Australian state of Victoria, and had been described as a "game-changer" for the island's tourism industry.However, it has seen a series of delays in its construction, skyrocketing costs and problems upgrading the current berths - mirroring many of Scotland's own ferry problems.Tasmania's infrastructure minister, Michael Ferguson, and the chairman of ferry operator TT-Line, which is state-owned, resigned due to the controversy in August.The cost of building the two LNG dual-fuel ships has risen by A$94m (£47.5m) from A$850m (£430m) when the contract was signed in 2021.Meanwhile the cost of upgrading current infrastructure in Devonport, which handles about 450,000 passengers a year, has more than quadrupled from an original estimate of A$90m (£45.5m).TT-Line was paying A$47,534 (£24,031) per week to berth the ship at Forth Ports, according to figures published by the Tasmanian government.Last week Australian media reported there was a possibility of the ferry being used to house Ukrainian refugees in Scotland.However the Scottish government quickly dismissed this saying: "This is not true and we have no plans to lease this or any other vessel for this purpose."
'Biggest infrastructure stuff-up'
Tasmania's transport minister Eric Abetz said that the government had done all it could to secure a lease that would benefit Tasmanians.He said: "We had an opportunity to secure an agreement worth tens of millions of dollars for the Tasmanian taxpayer, and it would have been economically irresponsible not to explore this."Previous similar leases provided more than €50m (£41.2m) to vessel owners, and it was prudent that we sought similar arrangements for Tasmanian taxpayers."The relentless negativity is hurting the state's economic opportunities, and it's time to move forward together."Tasmanian Labor, the opposition party, welcomed the "backflip" from the government but said it came four months and and millions of dollars too late.A spokesman said: "The ferry fiasco has been the biggest infrastructure stuff-up in Tasmania's history, but the cover-up has been even worse than the crime."

July 23 (Reuters) - Puerto Rico is ending talks to negotiate a $20 billion liquefied natural gas contract with New Fortress Energy (NFE.O), opens new tab, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday, citing a negotiator. New Fortress was unwilling to discuss changes to the contract and missed a key deadline, the report said, citing Osvaldo Linares, president of Recoms Group, the island's third-party procurement office. Shares of New Fortress fell more than 3% in afternoon trading. The stock has declined more than 75% in the past six months. The U.S. energy firm has been struggling to secure LNG for its power-generation operations on long-term agreements. The company is trying to raise cash and improve its finances by taking on partners for its primary businesses and selling some assets following its deferral of a shareholder dividend last year. Linares and New Fortress Energy did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment. Earlier this month, Bloomberg News reported Puerto Rico's financial watchdog had halted the supply deal over monopoly concerns. As a result of the talks ending, Puerto Rico's government is now in discussions with four other companies to provide LNG to the island under 30-day emergency contracts, Bloomberg's report said on Wednesday. Linares told Bloomberg that his agency has sent a formal communication to Puerto Rico's oversight board that negotiations had ended. The Financial Oversight and Management Board of Puerto Rico did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Commonwealth Games at risk of TV blackout as no broadcast deal secured for Glasgow event
The BBC has yet to sign a deal to show the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with 12 months to go before the event kicks-off. The Commonwealth Games is at risk of a TV blackout in the UK with no broadcast deal yet secured for the event's return to Glasgow next year. The BBC has been the principal broadcaster of the sporting extravaganza since 1954 but the corporation confirmed today it was still in talks over whether this would continue in 2026. Insiders said some Beeb bosses were unconvinced of the event's continuing relevance, with fewer countries willing to host it. Glasgow was previously announced in September last year as an emergency stand-in for the next Games after several other cities pulled out over cost fears. The vast majority of the event's budget is now coming from the £100m compensation the Australian state of Victoria paid Commonwealth organisers after backing out. The UK and Scottish Governments both refused to underwrite the costs of staging the event, citing wider pressures on public finances. An agreement to broadcast the previous Games in Glasgow in 2014 was in place two years before it kicked-off. Phil Batty, chief executive of Glasgow 2026, said: "This week we have just announced Sky New Zealand as one of our broadcast partners. "We also have Channel 7 in Australia, and there will be news on a UK broadcaster later this year." A spokeswoman for the Games told the Record: "We're in positive discussions with broadcasters across the Commonwealth, including the UK, and further announcements will be made in the months ahead." First Minister John Swinney has said he is confident Glasgow is "well-organised and well-prepared" for a new-look Games that will capture the public's imagination. He said: "All of our experience tells us that, on major events, the people of Scotland - and especially in Glasgow - get engaged." Swinney also backed Glasgow's decision to save an event which has been criticised in some quarters as being an outdated link to Britain's colonial past. He told the BBC: "The Commonwealth is still a very important forum for international co-operation and partnership between countries. "And, frankly, we need more international co-operation and friendship and collective endeavour in a world that is becoming increasingly fractured." The event has been massively scaled-back as a result of cost considerations, with just 11 sports being contested across four venues. Athletics will be staged at Scotstoun stadium, not Hampden Park, while swimming events will once again be held at the existing Tollcross pool. The overall budget for the 2014 event was £543m, but this time around just £114-130m will be spent. Petria Thomas, head of the Australian Commonwealth commission, said: "We're incredibly grateful and fortunate that the Scottish have stepped up to the mark here. It was obviously highly disappointing that the Victorian government pulled out and it left the Commonwealth sport movement in a very difficult position. "It's fantastic that the Games will be on in Glasgow. Obviously a little bit of a different look to them this time with fewer sports which is a shame. But it's the reality of the position that the Commonwealth sport movement was put in, unfortunately."
