'Criminal' Is on The 100 Best Podcasts of All Time

True Crime
Criminal is a true-crime podcast that attempts to set itself apart from a crowded field through its humanity, with a mission to never depict people as simply 'good' or 'evil,' but to dive into the more complex nuances that lie between those cartoonish poles. Born in 2014, Criminal started out of the pockets of its creators, who recorded early episodes in a closet, before growing the series' platform and landing at podcast giant Vox Media in 2021. Host Phoebe Judge provides a compassionate look at the lives of real people—both those who have committed crimes and those who have been affected by them. With almost 400 episodes to date, the episodes span from the harrowing story of a Haitian migrant sent to Guantanamo Bay in the 1990s to a TV journalist who helped more than 100 murder suspects negotiate safe surrender to the police. She investigates and slowly pulls back the layers on their lives without engaging in the sensationalization, glorification, and gore that has long been associated with the genre. Judge dives into the meta-questions of what it means to be a victim, what it means to be a perpetrator of harm, and what it means to share your story of trauma.

Haiti sends 150 soldiers to Mexico for training as gang violence surges

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- Haiti's government announced Friday that it has sent 150 soldiers to Mexico for training in the latest effort to fight back gangs that have gained almost entire control of the troubled country's capital. Under the agreement between the two countries, a total of 700 soldiers are to be trained in Mexico as Haiti seeks to revive its military. 'This departure marks a historic milestone in the reconstruction of the Haitian Armed Forces and is part of a policy of strengthening national security capabilities,' Haiti's government said. 'It illustrates the government's firm determination to restore … state authority throughout the country.' From October 2024 to June 2025, more than 4,800 people across Haiti were killed by gang violence. Hundreds more have been injured, kidnapped, raped and trafficked, according to the United Nations. The Haitian soldiers will spend three months in Mexico. Upon their return, they will join Haiti's National Police in its fight against gangs, bolstered by Kenyan police officers leading a sparsely funded U.N.-backed mission. Earlier this month, about 30 Haitian soldiers were sent to the French Caribbean island of Martinique for a two-week training. Haiti's armed forces were disbanded in 1995 following a coup to oust former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. The once-feared army had long been accused of horrific human rights abuses and were involved in several coups. In 2017, the army was reinstated by slain President Jovenel Moïse after the U.N. ended its peacekeeping operations. In recent years, the army has been recruiting young people to bolster its numbers. In 2023, there were roughly 2,000 soldiers, compared with some 7,000 when the army was disbanded. Newer figures were not available.

BEAVIS AND BUTT-HEAD Season 3 Drops Funny Trailer and Release Date — GeekTyrant

The hilariously dumb duo in animation is back, and they're ready to cause more chaos. The third season of the revival of Beavis and Butt-Head (the show's eleventh overall) is officially set to premiere on Comedy Central on September 3. The first two revival seasons streamed exclusively on Paramount+, but as announced in June 2024, the series will now air on Comedy Central moving forward. And yes, Paramount has dropped a brand-new trailer to get fans hyped. The trailer delivers everything you'd expect. At one point, in what is clearly a dream sequence, Beavis and Butt-Head get a shoutout from Metallica before asking: 'How much would it cost to buy the band?' Naturally, chaos follows as they end up knocking James Hetfield in the head with a gold bar. Classic. The series first premiered in 1993 on MTV, offering its signature satirical and stupidly brilliant commentary on youth culture. It quickly became a cultural phenomenon, loved by many and loathed by just as many. After ending in 1997, the series returned briefly in 2011 for an eighth season, and now it's found new life again in this latest revival. Of course, the franchise has expanded beyond TV. Paramount Pictures released Beavis & Butt-Head Do America in 1996, and more recently, Beavis & Butt-Head Do the Universe hit Paramount+ in 2022. There was even a spinoff, Daria, which ran for five seasons on MTV. Mike Judge, the creator and voice behind the iconic duo, is back at the helm. Judge also serves as an executive producer alongside Lew Morton, Michael Rotenberg, and the team at Titmouse including Chris Prynoski, Shannon Prynoski, Ben Kalina, and Antonio Canobbio. This isn't the only nostalgia play for Judge. He's also bringing back King of the Hill for Hulu with a brand-new 10-episode season dropping August 4. Beavis and Butt-Head Season 3 hits Comedy Central on September 3, and if the trailer is any indication, it's going to be just as idiotic and hilarious as ever.
