
Matcha is having a moment — and it's putting pressure on Japan's tea industry

It's the latest beverage du jour — and for people needing their morning pick-me-up, matcha tea increasingly beats espresso as their caffeine fix of choice.
"I worked on the bar a few weeks ago and I think past a certain point, you don't just skim milk, you don't pull shots. Everything you do is matcha," said Nadiia Semenichenko, regional manager at 10 Dean, a café and bar in Toronto.
Demand for the finely powdered tea — usually sourced from Japan and unmistakable for its vivid green colour and earthy taste — has gone supernova since the fall, mostly thanks to the legions of influencers swearing by it on social media and viral videos that are racking up millions of views, say experts who spoke to CBC News.
But that fervour has shaken up matcha's delicate supply chain, ultimately leading to a global shortage that is putting pressure on Japan's tea industry to ramp up production of the scarce commodity.
Semenichenko's cafe has sought out new suppliers to keep up with the demand, noting that one of them has put a cap on how much matcha the café could buy each month.
"By the end of this year, we'll feel substantial price increases in matcha, for sure," she said, referring to the café's costs.
And those who follow the Japanese tea industry say it's only a matter of time before customers who love the foamy, verdant drink get hit by a serious price hike.

A sudden shortage
Matcha is made from ground tencha, a type of green tea leaf that is shade-grown — giving it a more intense flavour and a deeper colour — before being steamed, dried, destemmed and passed through a milling machine to produce a powder.
The highest-grade version of matcha, used for Japanese tea ceremonies, is harvested in spring. It's passed through a stone mill, making it a time and resource-consuming process that produces only a small quantity of the final product.
Semenichenko says using ceremonial matcha as a baking ingredient or in lattes is like "if you buy really expensive whiskey and put it in whisky and Coke."
But when demand for matcha ticked sharply upward last fall, people were suddenly rushing to buy the high-grade version of the product. "Even tea ceremony schools in Japan suddenly couldn't find the matcha they would usually buy," said Anna Poian, a co-founder of the Global Japanese Tea Association.
Some of the most popular matcha brands in Japan — including Ippodo Tea, Yamasan and Marukyu Koyamaen — published apology notes to their customers and announced they would have to put limits on how much and what kind of matcha products they would sell to their buyers.
At that time, matcha producers "were not really facing a real shortage, but they didn't expect so much demand," explained Poian.
But the onslaught of matcha-related viral videos combined with record-high tourism to Japan — induced by a weak yen — had people clamouring for the tea, ultimately leading to a run on existing supply and a production shortage.
Now, the craze has spurred major coffee shops and restaurant chains to step up their matcha offerings so they can cash in, too.
Most Starbucks locations have served matcha drinks for years, but the coffee giant added a whole suite of specialty matcha drinks last summer. Matcha is on the menu at Booster Juice, Tim Hortons and McDonalds, too, though the companies didn't respond when asked when they added it.
Big retailers aren't immune to the shortage, either. Second Cup, which added another matcha latte to its menu in April, has recently dealt with delays in receiving its matcha supply, a spokesperson told CBC News.
Changing tides in Japan's tea-farming industry
The shortage is also a product of changes in Japan's domestic tea industry over the last two decades.
Within the country, both the consumption and production of tea have declined, and its tea-farming population is aging with few successors to take over.
"They don't see much of a future because the Japanese tea industry has been in decline for the past 15 to 20 years, due to the decrease in local consumption," explained Poian, whose organization publishes monthly reports on the industry.
Conversely, exports of Japanese tea to other countries are on the rise. In April 2025, total exports of Japanese tea were up 85.7 per cent from the same month the previous year, according to data from an industry group.
Canada's own intake of green tea from Japan has increased by 118 per cent since 2015, a spokesperson for Global Affairs told CBC News.
Compounding the problem is the fact that matcha makes up just six per cent of Japan's total tea production, according to Poian. "More farmers are shifting and focusing their production to matcha, but this unfortunately is not an easy switch," she said.
Countries like China and Vietnam produce matcha, too, but the Japanese version is considered premium. The Japanese government's farming ministry, in an effort to ramp up matcha production for the export market, is reportedly recommending that farmers replace their sencha — another type of green tea leaf — with tencha.
That shift isn't easy, even for the industry's experienced workforce, says Jason Eng, head of business development and partnerships at Kametani Tea, a tea production company based in Nara, Japan.
"Many of these farmers don't have the resources to do that — to upgrade all the machines or just change the machines altogether. So the investment costs a lot," he said.
Kametani Tea, which exports about 25 to 30 per cent of its product to international beverage companies, suppliers and wholesalers, will have to raise prices once the next harvest is ready. And those price shocks will eventually trickle down to matcha-loving consumers at cafés.
"It's gonna be really hard to digest, I think, for the consumers at the end with this huge surge of demand," he said.
'It just gets sold out'
After developing a taste for matcha, Cheena Lerum started posting recipe videos on her TikTok account. But the Toronto content creator noticed earlier this year that she got more views when she offered recommendations for where to buy and source matcha.
"You know when bubble tea became really famous a few years ago?" she said, referring to the Taiwanese tea drink that exploded in popularity during the mid-2010s. "Matcha's becoming that now."
Lerum, who has almost 30,000 followers on the platform, said she thinks "all the time" about whether she's contributing to the matcha shortage. She posts about the tea less frequently on social media now, partly because she hasn't been able to find her favourite products.
"They say don't gate-keep, but sometimes there are brands that you like and then it becomes too popular and it just gets sold out," Lerum explained. She's also noticed prices creeping up: a 30-gram tin of matcha powder that she used to buy online for $35 now costs almost $50, she said.
Back at the café, a few customers are sipping on matcha lattes. "I just find that it's a much better alternative to coffee," said Danielle Pineda, who says matcha energizes her without giving her coffee-like jitters. She has her own matcha whisk and often makes the drink at home.
Tommy Tanga, another customer at the cafe, said he finds the current price of matcha reasonable — a café order usually costs about $5 to $7, depending on the type of drink. It's been his go-to order ever since he tried it during a trip to Japan.
"I'm worried that it's going to get more expensive," he said.

Pedestrian Sunday is back in Kensington this weekend, but future of festival remains unclear
Kensington Market's popular Pedestrian Sunday festival is back this month, but its future for the rest of the season remains unclear as organizers look for solutions on safety concerns and the problem of illegal vendors. The festival has been running for more than two decades on the last Sunday of each month from May to October, when much of the market is closed to vehicles while pedestrians, vendors, and street artists fill the streets. It was halted last-minute in May after concerns over the influx of outside vendors and "unregulated food sales and unauthorized substances," the Kensington Market Business Improvement Area (KMBIA) said when announcing the cancellation. KMBIA chair Mike Shepherd says he feels comfortable holding the June 29 event because he believes outside vendors will be spread out across the city due to Pride Festival events and won't necessarily converge on Kensington. And as for July onward, "We'll see how it goes," he said. Kensington considers hiring outside help For now, the KMBIA is exploring options to help the event run more smoothly in the future. Among them is finding new organizers to run it for them. Shepherd says KMBIA is currently in talks with the team behind Do West Fest, adding it has had "really good success at dealing with these same problems." "[The] biggest thing…is what their cost is going to be to us," he said, referring to Uma Nota Culture, the not-for-profit that produced the festival for the Little Portugal Toronto BIA. The organization confirmed to CBC Toronto they had a conversation about potentially producing the event and are thrilled about the opportunity. The KMBIA increased its events and festival budget by 18 per cent this year, city records show. Each Pedestrian Sunday costs about $10,000 and May's unused budget will go into reserves, Shepherd says. The KMBIA also released a community survey on Monday asking residents and businesses for their thoughts on possible solutions such as having police on the streets, more security, or changing the festival's frequency. The results are still trickling in — and while some businesses told CBC Toronto the festival is a financial lifeline, others welcomed last month's pause. Jessica Silva of CrazyLoko Vintage says she loses roughly half her customers to illegal vendors who set up shop in front of her business selling other vintage clothes during the festival. "They're taking away from our business [while] we're here the entire year trying to make ends meet," she said. 'Only so many officers trying to do too big a job' Though there will be four extra security guards at Sunday's event, Shepherd says it's been a challenge to bring in more bylaw officers to crack down on illegal vendors. He says attempts to hire the officers through the city have been unsuccessful — something the city couldn't comment on without more specifics from the KMBIA. Illegal vendors selling things like unregulated food or art can be fined by bylaw officers, according to the city's communications coordinator, Shane Gerard. But if they sell drugs, he says the issue becomes a police matter. The most common violation related to sidewalk vendors is vending without a permit, which carries a $615 fine, Gerard says. This year, Shepherd hopes June's Pedestrian Sunday will give him the chance to have conversations with the illegal vendors and deal with them "in a nice way," before escalating things further. SIMMONS: Firing Masai Ujiri is a huge mistake by MLSE
You don't fire Masai Ujiri. Not now. Not ever. You don't sack this man of integrity and character, who changed basketball in Canada, who changed the way in which the Raptors are perceived, who brought a certain cachet to the sport, his love of Africa and his pride in everything that is Canadian basketball. You don't fire him. Not under these murky and unspoken circumstances. Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment CEO Keith Pelley couldn't easily explain why Ujiri was being let go Friday as president of the Raptors. Instead, he clumsily tripped over words that made no sense, answering little that was asked directly about the dismissal of the most important Raptor in the history of the franchise. Sounding more Peddie than Pelley, the CEO went through the how's and why's of Ujiri being replaced without ever really explaining why. What made less sense: Ujiri is out as president and he will be eventually replaced, Bobby Webster has a new deal as general manager and the front office staff of the Raptors has been retained. 'Change,' said Pelley, 'is inevitable. Thirteen seasons is a long time in a sports leadership role.' And then he explained what needed further explanation. He let Ujiri work the NBA draft for Toronto, knowing he was leaving the franchise. And that makes no sense. If he was being pushed out, they should have done so before the draft, not after it. And if the franchise isn't in great shape leadership-wise, why fire the president but retain the general manager and not only retain the GM, but extend him. All of this happening with Ujiri having one year remaining on his contact, due a 2% raise this coming season, and with a $1-million payment due to Giants of Africa, Ujiri's charity, very shortly. Pelley insisted the decision to fire Ujiri was his. Others outside the organization are not so convinced. 'Edward Rogers did this,' said a basketball insider. 'He doesn't like Masai. If Larry Tanenbaum was still in charge, Masai would still be running the Raptors.' It was Masai's way — his way or the highway — in his 13 years on the job. And many memories of all that made him different and special. ♦ ♦ ♦ In his first summer on the job in 2013, before the Raptors had played a single game under his leadership, Ujiri flew to Philadelphia for only one reason. He wanted to meet Kyle Lowry and get to know him — and find out whether he was worth keeping. He also wanted to shake him up just a little. 'How do you want to be perceived in the NBA?' he asked Lowry rather pointedly. Because back then, Ujiri suggested to the veteran point guard, you're wasting your career and most people look at you as a loser. The two went at it chapter and verse. With Ujiri tearing into Lowry, and Lowry from a position of weakness, trying to fight back. Whatever it was, Ujiri wasn't convinced he had a winner in Lowry. A few months after that, he thought he had a deal made to send Lowry to the New York Knicks. The deal was agreed upon along with the notion the Raptors would tank the season, looking to draft Canadian Andrew Wiggins in the first round of 2014. But the owner of the Knicks, James Dolan, called the deal off. The tanking of that season never happened. The Raptors won 48 games, the first of seven straight seasons making the playoffs. Lowry, the born hot-head, became the unlikely leader and best player for the Raptors. He would later attribute his change in career success to everything Masai had done for him. And the two even worked through and lived though a season in which they barely spoke to each other. Ujiri had traded Lowry's best friend, DeMar DeRozan, to San Antonio in a franchise-altering deal for Kawhi Leonard. He made the deal while telling DeRozan he wasn't going to trade him. Lowry, who had difficulty seeing beyond his own nose at times, didn't recognize he was playing for the best team of his time in Toronto. The two made up before the championship celebration in June of 2019. Lowry is expected to be the next Raptor to have his jersey retired by the team. A long time after having lunch — and being scolded — in Philadelphia. ♦ ♦ ♦ Leonard wanted to be traded — just not to Toronto. Not to Canada. Not to anywhere cold. Not to anywhere where he didn't have approval of his destination. The first time Leonard met with Ujiri after the deal for DeRozan was done, he asked a rather pointed question to Masai. 'Why did you trade for me?' said Leonard, who had played just nine games the year before the Spurs. Ujiri answered rather quickly: 'Because I think you're the best player in the NBA.' For a few seconds, there was just silence, which is something you come to expect being around Leonard, who was staring at Ujiri. And Ujiri was staring right back at Leonard. That year, with load management factoring into everything the Raptors did, Kawhi played just 60 regular season games for Toronto, hit the shot of all shots to win a playoff series against Philadelphia, had an incredible double overtime playoff win on an injured leg against Milwaukee and was named Finals MVP when the Raptors beat Golden State for their only NBA championship. Leonard had proven to be what Ujiri told he was when he first acquired him. When he played, he was the best player in the NBA. The Raptors will forever have a championship with his autograph all over it. The trade no one saw coming — the great gamble sending an established star in DeRozan for the question that was Leonard — proved to be the best work of Ujiri's time with the Raptors. ♦ ♦ ♦ The Raptors won 59 games in 2018, the most wins in franchise history. Before that, coach Dwane Casey had a tremendous run of 48-49-56-51 wins. That year, he was named coach of the year. The league named him that. On his own team, from his own manager, there were questions. By the time the playoffs ended that season, Casey and Ujiri were no longer speaking to each other. The animosity of year-after-year playoff failures — most of it coming against LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers — had hardened both men. Casey was named coach of the year and Ujiri did what has almost never been done in basketball history. He fired the coach of the year. He thought Casey had taken the team as far as he could. Ujiri had a coach in mind to replace Casey, but Mike Budenholzer wound up in Milwaukee instead of Toronto. In what seemed like a guess at the time — who knew, really? — Ujiri hired assistant coach Nick Nurse to replace the coach of the year Casey. Nurse had been on almost no one's radar around the NBA. He'd kicked around basketball circles forever as an assistant or minor league head coach. This was his first chance at head coaching in the NBA. He distinguished himself early on as the Raptors won the title in 2019. Nurse lasted five seasons in Toronto with a .582 winning percentage and coaching in 41 playoff games. He was let go at the end of the 2023 season, when he and Ujiri seemed philosophically heading in different directions. ♦ ♦ ♦ I can still smell the locker room from the celebration of 2019 in Oakland. That stays with you after all these years. There was champagne spraying. There was plastic covering everywhere you looked. There were safety goggles if you wanted to protect your eyes. And everywhere, there was champagne spraying. It's the kind of smell you never forget and the soaking wet Raptors were engaging in hugs and high-fives and family photos for anyone who was there. Masai Ujiri couldn't have been prouder that night, even if he later talked about being assaulted. We sat with him in what was probably the quietest corner of all the bedlam after the Raptors championship victory over the Golden State Warriors. He cried a little bit, he smiled a lot, he seemed to enjoy being surrounded by the media people who had either become friends or advocates or critics or all of that over the years. That's what happens when you cover a team honestly. There are good days and there are bad days and there are good relationships and bad relationships and often with the same people. Masai had promised a championship when he first came to Toronto. Sometimes it sounds like predictable rhetoric when you hear that kind of talk. From him, though, coming to Toronto, coming to a place known for NBA failure, coming to a place where being irrelevant was just part of the show, he sounded more believable than the usual salesman stuff you hear. And I reminded him of that in the winning locker room. 'You told us this was coming and we didn't believe you,' I remember saying to Masai. He told us to 'f— Brooklyn. He sold us on We The North. We taught us about belief and hope, trust and care. And every time I saw him and spoke to him, spent any time with him, it didn't matter the circumstances, that proved to be a better day. The championship in 2019 was his first. It wouldn't be his last, he said. One day, the next one may come. Just not here. Not anymore. Word began to spread Friday morning that Ujiri was out as Raptors president, weeks after first learning about it. Twenty-six years after the Blue Jays won their second World Series, the Raptors had a title to call their own. Three titles for Toronto in North America's big four sports. In 129 seasons of combined NHL hockey, NBA basketball and Major League Baseball since the Maple Leafs last won the Stanley Cup and Toronto arrived on the scene, the Raptors had their own championship. 250 CN Tower workers could go on strike before Canada Day as contract talks stall

In a statement on Friday, Unifor, which represents the 250 full-time and part-time workers at Toronto's iconic landmark, said negotiations had reached a standstill. The deadline to reach a deal and avoid a strike or lockout is at 12:01 a.m. on Monday. 'We've hit an impasse and time is running out,' said Shan Ramanathan, president of Unifor Local 4271. 'Our members want a fair deal. We're ready to bargain, but the company needs to return to the table with a serious commitment to reaching an agreement.' According to the union, the lack of pension improvements and the need for fair wage increases are among the key issues at the bargaining table. Union members include hosts, waitstaff, bartenders, chefs, cooks, and butchers. A spokesperson for the CN Tower said in a statement that it presented its best offer on Thursday, but the union 'chose not to respond.' Both sides have been in talks since April. The spokesperson noted that in the event of a labour disruption, the tower's observation levels, EdgeWalk, and the shop would remain open, but food and beverages would be unavailable. 'We remain hopeful that a labour disruption can be avoided through respectful and reasonable negotiation,' the statement read. The CN Tower is owned by Canada Lands Company, a Crown corporation.
