Express Tribune01-06-2025
Netflix has officially unveiled the first plot synopsis for Stranger Things Season 5 via its TUDUM blog, confirming long-awaited details about the final chapter of the beloved series.
The synopsis hints at a dark and challenging path ahead as the story returns to the haunting roots of Hawkins.
"Hawkins is scarred by the opening of the Rifts, and our heroes are united by a single goal: find and kill Vecna. But he has vanished — his whereabouts and plans unknown. Complicating their mission, the government has placed the town under military quarantine and intensified its hunt for Eleven, forcing her back into hiding. As the anniversary of Will's disappearance approaches, so does a heavy, familiar dread. The final battle is looming — and with it, a darkness more powerful and more deadly than anything they've faced before. To end this nightmare, they'll need everyone — the full party — standing together, one last time."
This final season appears to draw a full circle, revisiting the emotional and thematic core of the show while escalating the danger to unprecedented levels.
Among the cast, the core four, including Noah Schnapp, Finn Wolfhard, Caleb McLaughlin, and Gaten Matarazzo, return alongside Millie Bobby Brown.
Other returning cast members include Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Natalia Dyer, Joe Keery, Maya Hawke, Charlie Heaton, Sadie Sink, Amybeth McNulty, Cara Buono, Jamie Campbell Bower, and Priah Ferguson.
Co-creators Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer also revealed new cast members, including Nell Fisher, Alex Breaux, Jake Connell, and Linda Hamilton.
Netflix confirmed that Stranger Things season 5 will be released in three parts: Volume 1 on November 26, 2025, Volume 2 on Christmas Day 2025, and the series finale on New Year's Eve.

Netflix's 'The Old Guard 2' draws criticism from fans over pacing, plot and cliffhanger ending

Netflix's highly anticipated sequel The Old Guard 2 premiered on Wednesday, featuring Charlize Theron reprising her role as Andy, joined by returning cast members KiKi Layne and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Uma Thurman also joined the ensemble as Discord, a mysterious antagonist said to be among the first immortals. The film continues the saga of immortal warriors, this time with a greater emphasis on justice and protection. However, a key shift occurs when Andy loses her immortality, only to regain it through Booker's sacrifice. Matthias Schoenaerts' character transfers his eternal gift to Andy in a plot twist that sets up an unresolved ending. Despite the return of beloved characters and the introduction of new faces, early feedback has been overwhelmingly critical. Many viewers voiced their frustration on social media platforms. One user wrote, 'The Old Guard 2's real superpower is testing my patience.' Another added, 'No way I waited for The Old Guard 2 for 5 years just for it to end like that with no confirmation for a 3rd movie.' Critics have cited issues with the film's pacing, a lack of emotional depth, and its unresolved narrative as key letdowns. With no confirmation on whether a third instalment is underway, the cliffhanger ending has only added to viewers' dissatisfaction.

'Squid Game' director reveals original ending of final season before reviving player 222

Squid Game director Hwang Dong Hyuk recently revealed that the globally streamed Netflix drama originally had a different finale. In an interview with Joongang Ilbo, he said the first version of the script ended on a more hopeful note, with protagonist Seong Gi Hun meeting Hwang Jun Ho and travelling to the US to see his daughter. Hwang said he changed course after reflecting on present-day global crises. 'I personally started to feel that surviving in this world was becoming increasingly difficult. Inequality is deepening, the threat of war is growing, and yet no one is taking responsibility,' he explained. The director added that stories of extreme wealth, including Jeff Bezos's reported $51.7 million wedding, helped solidify his decision to rework the ending. 'I felt that now is the time for older generations to let go a bit of their growth, development, and desires,' Hwang said, noting that this inspired him to include a child in the final storyline to symbolise future generations. The newly shared version of events has reignited discussion about the show's conclusion and the societal critique embedded within. Hwang's comments offer deeper insight into the intentions behind the darker direction, even if it diverged from what many expected.
