5 Chargers players who need a good training camp

USA Today17-07-2025
As the Chargers open training camp on Thursday in preparation for the Hall of Fame Game on July 31, the questions Los Angeles has about their roster will begin to come more into focus.
Here are a few players who need a good training camp to keep their future in Los Angeles this season and beyond.
RB Hassan Haskins
Haskins was LA's short yardage back and supplementary kick returner next to Derius Davis last season, but didn't have a particularly effective season on the ground. With 2024 sixth-rounder Kimani Vidal serving a different role as a receiving back and Omarion Hampton and Najee Harris both capable of taking short yardage opportunities, Haskins could very well find himself as RB4 and on the roster bubble by the time the preseason gets going in earnest. Jaret Patterson, who was on the Chargers practice squad last season, and highly touted UDFA Raheim Sanders loom as threats to snag that job away from the Michigan alum.
WR Quentin Johnston
Johnston is penciled in as Los Angeles' starter at the Z receiver position, but the Chargers may need to get creative early in camp with Mike Williams on PUP and Tre Harris yet to sign his rookie contract due to a leaguewide bottleneck regarding guarantee structure. There aren't many other candidates to practice in the X role, where Johnston played last season, but fifth-rounder KeAndre Lambert-Smith and veteran Jalen Reagor could fill in at Z. No matter where he lines up, however, Johnston will need to show continued progress after a sophomore season that was an improvement, but still below the expectation of a former first-round pick.
DL/FB Scott Matlock
While Matlock's utility on both sides of the ball is a nice novelty, there's going to be plenty of competition on both sides of the ball for his spots. Tight end Tucker Fisk is already part of the jumbo package as well, but the Chargers seem to be excited about what UDFA Stevo Klotz might bring when the pads come on tomorrow. On defense, Matlock is the fifth or sixth defensive lineman in the rotation at best and will be competing for time with Justin Eboigbe and Naquan Jones, with likely only a maximum of six roster spots available.
CB Ja'Sir Taylor
Taylor looked like he was poised to be a massive success story after winning the starting slot corner job as a sixth-round rookie two season ago, but he struggled to maintain that level of play last season. With the emergence of Tarheeb Still as a rookie last year and Derwin James playing so much time in the slot, Taylor is suddenly on the fringe of the roster and needs to rebound in training camp to fend off seventh-rounder Trikweze Bridges for the final roster spot at cornerback.
S Tony Jefferson
Jefferson was another nice storyline to track this time last year, as the veteran came out of retirement to come back home and compete for a spot at safety. While the Chargers started him on the practice squad last season, Jefferson ended up playing in 8 games and started 4 due to injuries to Alohi Gilman and Elijah Molden. Both are now healthy alongside James and the Chargers added sixth-rounder RJ Mickens in the draft. To keep the momentum going, Jefferson will likely need to either outduel the rookie or work his way up from the practice squad again, which would require boxing out younger options like Kendall Williamson, Emany Johnson, and Jaylen Jones.

Chargers land Terry McLaurin on the cheap in most recent trade prediction

Chargers land Terry McLaurin on the cheap in most recent trade prediction originally appeared on The Sporting News Training camps are in full swing all over the NFL, but as is often the case this time of year, the players who aren't in camp due to a disagreement over how much money they're making are dominating the headlines. Such is the case in the nation's capital, where Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin is at odds with the front office and is searching for a new deal. Though McLaurin has clearly outperformed his contract and has been one of the few bright spots in Washington for years before they broke out in a big way last year, the front office is standing pat... for now. That has led to McLaurin requesting a trade and setting off a myriad of ideas around the NFL media world as to which team could make a move for him. Washington would be taking a great risk by not paying him and conceding to his trade request, but if that happens, several teams would jump on the Pro Bowl wide receiver for the right deal. The Los Angeles Chargers have been connected to those trade ideas all offseason, and now a new one has come up in which the AFC West team would make out quite well. Recently, Daniel Popper of the The Athletic put together a list of potential trade partners for McLaurin and what the team would have to give up to get a deal done. He has the Chargers acquiring him for a fourth-round pick in 2026. Yes, that's it. "The Chargers are still figuring out who is going to play on the outside alongside star slot Ladd McConkey in three-receiver packages. They have Quentin Johnston and two ascending rookies in Tre' Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith, but that group is unproven. The Chargers signed Mike Williams as a veteran option in March. Williams, though, retired before training camp. McLaurin would check a number of boxes for the Chargers offense. He played more than 83 percent of his snaps on the outside for Washington in 2024. He was elite in contested-catch situations, a skill the Chargers are seeking. The Chargers have the cap space to take on McLaurin's salary for this season. They are also projected to have the second-most cap space in the league in 2026, according to Over the Cap. Their top five receivers — McConkey, Johnston, Harris, Lambert-Smith and Derius Davis — are all on rookie deals. They could afford a more expensive veteran contract in this room from a cap perspective. The Chargers would have to do a deal with McLaurin after trading for him. Would he be open to something more short-term? A two-year extension at $30 million in AAV could make sense for both sides", wrote Popper. The Chargers need more help at wide receiver, and that has been documented all offseason. To get McLaurin for a fourth-round pick would be a steal. Yes, they would need to sign him to the extension that Washington is not giving him, but the team has the cap space available to do that. That has also been well documented. For those reasons, they will continue to be mentioned in potential blockbusters such as this one. But to get a top-flight wide receiver for a day-three draft pick is one that the front office could not pass up on. Why the Rams are in ‘scary' situation with Matthew Stafford

Yahoo Sports NFL analyst Nate Tice, NFL writer Charles McDonald and fantasy analyst Matt Harmon discuss the Rams quarterback's recent back injury and what his week-to-week status means for the Outlook in Los Angeles this season. Hear the full conversation on 'Football 301' - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript Matthew Stafford, quarterback for the LA Rams, is still week to week with back issues. He has seen two spine specialists in the past two weeks. Jordan Rodrique, who always does great reporting for The Athletic, has made note that he is also going to be missing in squad scrimmages. Um, we have 5 weeks until week 1. Matt, I'll start with you. How concerned are you? 1 through 5 on the heat check of concern. Uh, 4, I'll give it a 4 out of 5. Like it would be if I think that if, if I didn't have so much faith that Matthew Stafford could probably just walk in with no practice time and just run the Rams offense because he's been there so long and he's got great chemistry with Pukanua. I'd probably say 5 out of 5, but I do think that I have a lot of faith that he could show up and just run the offense. So I don't know. It's just definitely concerning for me. Like I, I, you want your starting quarterback out there building chemistry with uh, the new receiver that you brought in, Devonte Adams. I think Stafford is more volatile at this point than maybe he's credited elsewhere, but that also makes me even more concerned that like he's, he's missing practice time and just if he's coming in already dealing with the back injury, that just again, I think will lead to more volatility for him as a player. So yeah, I, I think this is a pretty big problem until we actually see him out there stacking multiple practices together. Uh, yeah, I was gonna say like 3.5, round 4. I mean this, this is, this is a big deal. This is basically what the whole blueprint is kind of built around, like him being healthy enough to stand back there and deliver it to Devonte Adams and, uh, you know, Puka Nua this year. I think it's really concerning. Uh, it's going to be interesting to see how they manage this. I would imagine that this is going to be a pretty quiet preseason in training camp for Stafford just trying to get him as healthy as you can for week one, and then I guess, can you survive the onslaught of what you got to open the season. Yeah, I'm, I'm concerned. I'm a 4. Back stuff is scary, and I just think too, given his age, you know, it's not exactly a youthful age, but Stafford has tried his best, like he's kind of really played around with his weight, It looks like. Um, so yeah, just a little bit more concerns and I'm still optimistic that it'll work out. The Rams kind of always do things at their own pace. This is a quarterback that doesn't exactly need every rep, you want them to get every rep, but it's not exactly a guy that he needs it. He's, he's 37, 38 years old, he's got a lot of starts under his belt, you know, he can go out there, they're adding layers to stuff they already got, it's more that they added personnel that can really change it up and improve it. So, I am concerned though. Close

Dodgers activate Max Muncy from IL, Mookie Betts will not move down from No. 2 spot in lineup

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced that infielder Max Muncy has been activated from the injured list before Monday's matchup with the St. Louis Cardinals. He is in the lineup and will bat fifth. Muncy had been on the IL since July 3 with a bone bruise in his left knee suffered when the Chicago White Sox's Michael A. Taylor slid into his leg at third base. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] With Muncy's return, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was asked if that might affect Mookie Betts' spot in the batting order. Roberts moved Betts back to the No. 2 spot in the lineup on Sunday after batting him leadoff for the previous nine games, swapping him with Shohei Ohtani. He added that Muncy's return might influence whether Betts could eventually be moved lower in the order. For now, however, Betts is staying in the No. 2 spot. "I'm going to continue to believe in him and trust that he's the best option," Roberts told reporters, via Fox Sports' Rowan Kavner. Betts is hitless in his past four games, going 0-for-16 with one walk and two RBI. Before Sunday's game, he told reporters that he's tried everything he can think of to improve his hitting. "I've done everything possible,' Betts said to USA Today's James H. Williams. 'It's just kind of the same result. I'm out of answers. I've done everything I can do. It's up to God at this point.' Meanwhile, Roberts said he was happy with Betts' approach at the plate, even if it hadn't yielded any hits recently. Before getting injured, Muncy was batting .250/,375/.457 with 10 doubles, 13 home runs and 55 RBI in 315 plate appearances. But he'd significantly improved in June, hitting .333/.459/.654 with seven homers and 24 RBI while drawing 19 walks in 98 PAs. Despite Betts' struggles and Muncy's absence, the Dodgers still rank second in MLB with a .768 team OPS and fifth with a .254 team batting average. To open a spot for Muncy on the active roster, utilityman Tommy Edman went on the IL with a sprained right ankle. He re-aggravated the injury while rounding first base during the fifth inning of Sunday's 3-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. Edman has battled an ankle injury throughout the season and previously went on the IL in May because of it. The Dodgers (65-47) have won four of their past six games going into Monday's matchup and hold a three-game lead over the San Diego Padres (62-50) for first place in the NL West.
