No arch, no job: Tamil Nadu transport department says no driver jobs for flat-footed candidates, cites reasons
Tamil Nadu
, the
state transport department
has decided to take a closer look, at the driver's feet. According to a TOI report, drivers with flat feet (a condition called pes planus) will now be disqualified from applying to drive for any of the state's eight transport corporations.
There are currently 3,274 driver vacancies, including 364 in Chennai's
Metropolitan Transport Corporation
(
MTC
) and 318 in the State Express Transport Corporation (SETC). Drivers in these services often work long shifts and take on overnight journeys. People with flat feet lack an arch in the foot, meaning the entire sole touches the ground. This leads to overpronation, where the ankle rolls inwards too much, affecting how the legs align.
Doctors from medical boards responsible for certifying drivers say that flat-footed individuals have slower reaction times while braking. Constant use of pedals in such cases causes strain to travel up to the knees, hips and lower back, as drivers shift their posture to avoid discomfort. This ongoing stress, doctors say, may result in joint pain and slower reflexes.

'Over time, the way the foot works with the pedal changes, especially during long driving hours or when sudden braking is needed,' said orthopaedic doctor Dr D Siddharth, as quoted by TOI. Professional drivers, unlike casual ones, need strong arch support for fast and accurate footwork across hours.

This is a serious concern for MTC and SETC, where drivers rely on pedal control for extended periods. 'If a driver has flat feet, their control and quick reaction can be affected,' said a senior official from the Institute of Road Transport, which helped draft the new rules.
Doctors say special shoe inserts called orthotics can help improve response time and reduce tiredness, but there's no official policy yet. While flat feet affect about 3% of adults in Tamil Nadu, more so in those with obesity, no other Indian state has added it as a reason to reject driver candidates.
'This is the first time they're considering biomechanics while hiring,' said S D Kamaraj of the TN Stop Corruption Federation. 'But in reality, such checks are often skipped. Let's hope the process is fair and transparent this time.'

With juvenile on board, pay 2x fine for breaking traffic rules
NEW DELHI: The road transport ministry has proposed doubling of penalty for traffic rule violation by people driving with children, a move that will ensure safety and responsibility. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It has also proposed a "merit and demerit (positive and negative) point system" for all drivers based on their compliance with or violation of traffic rules. The changes have been proposed as part of amendments to the Motor Vehicles Act, and these have been circulated among ministries for their feedback, TOI has learnt. Sources said the proposal of doubling penalty for traffic rule violation has been made considering rampant non-compliance of norms by parents and family members driving with children and by buses owned or hired by schools to transport students. The higher penalty is aimed at making both drivers and vehicle owners responsible. However, a section of road safety experts feel that any addition to the list of offences may end up only as a "better" legislative exercise and another avenue for corruption, if not implemented objectively. "Even now traffic cops catch and penalise drivers only for half a dozen offences such as speeding, drunk driving, jumping red signal, using phone and not wearing seatbelt or helmet, while the MV law covers over 100 offences. How will cameras installed identify if a juvenile is sitting in the rear seat of a car and will police personnel stop vehicles and check the age of people sitting inside? While framing laws and policies we don't think of India but Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and big cities," an expert said. As far as the proposal of "merit and demerit" points system for drivers is concerned, govt will set a threshold for demerit points and any driver accumulating negative marks beyond that will face the risk of suspension and cancellation of his/her driving licence. The ministry has also proposed to link insurance premium to behaviour of drivers, which will be reflected through positive and negative points. Sources said the proposed amendments include mandatory driving test for DL holders applying for renewal before expiry of licence, if they have violated traffic rules.

The front of the XUV700 facelift will be all new. There would be a new headlamp setup in the front. (Instagram/carindianews) Check Offers Mahindra has begun development on a refreshed version of the XUV700, which originally debuted in August 2021. With competition in the segment intensifying, a mid-cycle update was expected. Recently, the facelifted model was spotted testing on Indian roads, giving a first look at the upcoming changes. 2026 Mahindra XUV700 Facelift: Design Updates Based on the spy shots, the XUV700 facelift will feature redesigned headlamps and updated LED daytime running lights. A reworked front grille and revised bumper also appear to be part of the visual changes. While the side profile seems largely unchanged, it's likely that Mahindra will introduce a new alloy wheel design. The rear end remains hidden in the latest sightings, but subtle updates such as a revised bumper and a new LED lightbar spanning the width of the SUV are anticipated. 2026 Mahindra XUV700 Facelift: New Features Expected The XUV700 already comes packed with features, but the facelifted version is likely to benefit from Mahindra's advancements in its Born Electric range. Expected additions include a self-parking function, a digital key, and a premium Harman Kardon audio system with Dolby Atmos. The cabin might also adopt a new dashboard layout inspired by the upcoming XUV.e9, enhancing its overall modern appeal. However, it remains uncertain whether the facelift will incorporate the third passenger screen, which has been seen on Mahindra's electric concepts. A noteworthy addition could be the inclusion of drive modes for the petrol variant, aimed at improving fuel efficiency. The 2.2-litre diesel engine will also continue, delivering 182 bhp at 3,500 rpm. Torque output stands at 420 Nm with the manual gearbox and 450 Nm with the automatic transmission.
