Day after stampede, thousands gather to worship deities in Puri
A day after three people were killed and 50 others injured in a stampede near Shree Gundicha temple in Puri, thousands of devotees on Tuesday made a beeline to have a darshan of the sibling deities -- Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Lord Jagannath.
In view of Monday's incident, barricades have been erected in front of the Shree Gundicha temple and different queues made for the smooth darshan of the deities at 'Adapa Mandap' (the podium on which the deities are seated) situated inside the temple, a senior police officer said.
"We are alert... by the grace of the Lord, everything is running smoothly. Devotees are entering the Shree Gundicha Temple without any hassle," said Soumendra Priyadarshi, an ADG-rank IPS officer who has been assigned the responsibility of overseeing the police arrangement during Rath Yatra.
He was assigned the task by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi after the stampede.
Devotees believe that they can wash away their sins if they have darshan of Lord Jagannath atop the 'Adapa Mandap'.
At least three persons, including two women, were killed and around 50 others injured in a stampede near Shree Gundicha temple in Puri on Sunday morning during a ceremony related to the ongoing Rath Yatra festivities, officials said.
The incident took place around 4.20 am when thousands of devotees had gathered near the chariots parked in front of the temple, they said.

During central deputation, he was promoted as ADGP and served as additional director of IB in Vijayawada and Mumbai. He was conferred with the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2015 and the Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2009.

"Administrative lapse, callousness": BJD's Mohanty demands resignation of Odisha Law Minister over Puri stampede
Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], July 1 (ANI): Biiju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Lenin Mohanty on Monday lashed out at the 'administrative lapse and callousness' of the concerned authorities which led to the stampede during the Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra a day earlier on June 29 and demanded the resignation of State Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan. The BJP leader said that the officials and ministers concerned with the law and order situation during the Rath Yatra were absent during the stampede. Speaking to ANI, Mohanty said, 'We are extremely sad for the incident that has happened. This is the land of Lord Jagannath and people love to come to that place. During the annual rath yatra, a stampede took place on Sunday due to administrative lapse and callousness.' 'A team of 5 ministers was constituted, they were not there when the stampede took place, nor were the officials. When the stampede happened, these five ministers and the top-level officers were not there. An apology is not sufficient. Immediately after that, the real culprit should be punished. They just transferred the collector and DSP,' he said. Adding further, he said, 'The real culprit is the law minister (Prithviraj Harichandan). He always boasts high but has very low performance. He should take moral responsibility and he should resign...' Karnataka Congress MLC BK Hariprasad also reacted to the stampede and said, 'The BJP always tries to take political advantage of every situation. Earlier on Sunday, Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan described the stampede that occurred during the annual Puri Rath Yatra as 'very unfortunate' and said appropriate action will be taken after the completion of an investigation. Three devotees lost their lives and several others were injured during the crowd surge at the world-famous Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath in Puri. 'The incident is very unfortunate. The state government has taken strict action and a senior officer will investigate the incident... We will take action once we get the report of the investigation,' Harichandan told reporters. He added, 'Mahaprabhu, with his wish, gives darshan to his devotees... Tomorrow, the devotees will have the opportunity to offer prayers... I prayed to Mahaprabhu for the well-being of everyone.' Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep sorrow over the incident and announced a financial assistance of Rs 25 lakh to the families of each of the deceased devotees. He also assured that strict action would be taken against those responsible and pledged to prevent such tragedies in the future. 'Rath Yatra is a source of pride for Odisha,' the Chief Minister said, adding that the safety and sanctity of the festival would be safeguarded at all costs. Family members of the deceased alleged that while devotees struggled to catch a glimpse of the deities atop the chariots, police escorted VIP guests right up to the Raths, a charge denied by the police. According to the bereaved, like previous years, barricades were installed around the three chariots to prevent devotees from touching or boarding them, a policy which is in tune with a 2014 Orissa high court order that allows only duty-bound servitors of Jagannath Temple to access the chariots. Dilip Sahu, whose wife Basanti (42) is among the dead, said Rath Yatra festival appeared to cater to VIPs. "I am not claiming that the stampede occurred because of VIP darshan. Despite the barricade regulations, police were seen escorting certain high profile visitors within the barricaded zone, allowing them closer access to the chariots. Ordinary devotees struggled amidst overcrowding outside the fences," Sahu said. Sahu spoke of his children's distress and shock at their mother's death. "My 13-year-old son and 18-year-old daughter, who survived, are traumatised. Devotees expressed their desire for basic amenities, emphasising the need for effective crowd management and ease of darshan. Biswajit Das from Balianta area near Bhubaneswar, who lost his wife Prabhati (52) in the stampede, said, "We have no issues with VIP darshan system. It didn't result in the stampede. However, the complete neglect of common devotees is wrong. We were abandoned without police support." Devotees alleged that despite police presence near the chariots, they neither managed the crowd nor provided immediate assistance when the tragedy occurred. "The police response was abysmal and inadequate. Their numbers were insufficient and barely visible in the crowd," Das said. Denying the allegations, police said VIP darshan was not going on at the time of the stampede. "The unfortunate incident happened despite adequate police deployment," a senior police officer said. The govt said the high-level investigation team would examine all contributing factors behind the stampede. "The probe team will analyse all possible causes of the mishap and suggest actions to the govt. The administrative inquiry is expected to be completed within a month," law minister Prithiviraj Harichandan said. The probe committee, headed by development commissioner Anu Garg, visited the stampede site near Gundicha Temple and launched the investigation. She held a discussion with senior officers including new Puri collector Chanchal Rana and SP Pinak Mishra.
