Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin has been shown the door with three rounds remaining in the 2025 season.
Goodwin's fate was sealed on Monday night when he was told by the board his services were no longer required.
The premiership winning coach had faced an uncertain future thanks to the club's fall down the ladder with Code Sports' Jay Clark reporting the board had lost faith in the direction of the team under his leadership.
Goodwin was contracted through to the end of the 2026 season, however the club determined they wanted a change made instantly.
The 48-year-old, who led the club to the 2021 premiership, will receive a near one-million dollar payout.
According to reports, Demons players were set to be told the news on Tuesday morning, but the news has leaked out before they could hear it first hand.
The club is reportedly set to hold a press conference at midday.

Goodwin had found himself on an increasingly hot seat as the Demons languish in the lower half of the ladder with a 7-13 record.
Despite all the growing noise, Goodwin was adamant he had the backing of the board in the wake of their historic loss to St Kilda two weeks ago.
'We're all very aligned about the process of where we need to go to, what we need to create success,' Goodwin said last week.
'We always knew that in this transition period that there would be challenges, our job is not to get consumed with the noise.

'Our job is to go about the process … these conversations are ongoing and we're really clear about the strategy. I feel incredibly supported by the board, I have for nine years.
'I've been able to go through these challenges before with clarity and strength and stability to create success; 2019 we finished second last, two years later we won the flag.
'You can't get consumed in noise, all you can do is be clear with your strategy, clear with your process, understand challenge, be clear about it and go about the process to build the next great team – I feel incredibly supported by the board.'

Club great Garry Lyon was 'shocked' to learn of Goodwin's axing after being informed live on air Tuesday morning.
'I'm stunned, shocked, totally shocked,' Lyon said on SEN Breakfast.
'I had no heads up on this whatsoever. Absolutely just shocked, I can't get my head around it.
'He won't be coaching a farewell game, that's something I can promise you.'
Lyon believed a call on Goodwin's future wouldn't be made until the end of the season before praising Goodwin as a hero for guiding the club to a drought-breaking premiership.
'I'm absolutely stunned. I thought there would be a long review at the end of this year and then determine whether he would coach out his final year,' he added.
'Premiership coaches are pretty rare at the Melbourne footy club. He's one of four.
'He will be a hero of this football club forever and a day, but that obviously doesn't guarantee your tenure.
'This is a massive call.'

The club are facing an uncertain offseason with several star players finding themselves in swirling trade rumours.
Clayton Oliver was reportedly halfway out the door at the end of the 2024 season and is expected to once again find himself in the thick of trade talks.
Fellow midfield superstar Christian Petracca also contemplated a trade away from the club last season before ultimately staying put.
But with another lacklustre season in the books, rumours are already ramping up that the 29-year-old could be eyeing off greener pastures.
'Is the writing on the wall for Christian Petracca at Melbourne?,' Jay Clark posed on Fox Footy's The First Crack.

'It doesn't feel like there's a (trade) market for Clayton Oliver at the moment and Jack Viney is a Demon for life. Petracca is the one who has been frozen out.
'Can he accept he could be more of a permanent forward at Melbourne as the new era settles in? Like Toby Greene. Or does he at 29 years of age still think he can be that superstar on-baller?
'Because if he does, maybe that has to be at another club. We talked a lot about Collingwood and Carlton last year, is the best fit for him Hawthorn?'
Melbourne will finish the 2025 season with games against the Western Bulldogs, Hawthorn and Collingwood.
The club has yet to announce who will take over as caretaker coach for the remaining games.

England fans lose minds over Mohammed Siraj's fifth Test celebration

Don't miss out on the headlines from Cricket. Followed categories will be added to My News. England cricket fans have fumed that India should be disqualified from their Test match victory after Mohammed Siraj's 'cringe' celebration. Siraj, 31, didn't hold back during his celebrations after India stunned England to win the Fifth Test by six runs, The Sun reports. Siraj and his teammates pulled off a devastating showing as they took three wickets in just over 30 minutes of play to leave an injured Chris Woakes needing to take to the crease with his arm in a sling. Woakes, who has been out of the series since dislocating his shoulder on day one of the final Test, was forced to come out and partner Gus Atkinson and bat with one hand as England searched for just 17 runs to win the series. The drama came to an end when Siraj bowled out Atkinson to win the Test and draw the series. And the fast-bowler made sure everyone packed inside The Oval knew exactly how much it meant to him as he leapt up and celebrated by emulating Cristiano Ronaldo's 'Siu' celebration in the middle of the pitch. One fan wrote: 'I just cringed so hard at Siraj pulling the Siu in the middle of The Oval.' While another added: 'That celebration is shocking'. A third fumed: 'Why are they celebrating like they won the whole thing?' And a fourth even suggested India should be disqualified, writing: 'India should be disqualified from winning that purely on the basis of Siraj doing Ronaldo's celebration. God that's cringe'. When Ronaldo is your idol, greatness isn't a choice, it's fate.' And a second posted: 'Yeah, Siraj has got that clutch Ronaldo gene'. England captain Ben Stokes said that his team were 'bitterly disappointed' not to get over the line and win the series following India's dramatic final Test victory. Port Adelaide great Travis Boak retires despite chance to make AFL history: ‘The right time'

Beloved Port Adelaide great Travis Boak has decided against extending his glittering AFL career into a 20th season and will retire at the end of 2025. The 384-game veteran announced his retirement on Tuesday and will finish his career alongside coach Ken Hinkley. Boak had overcome injury in May to enter a rich vein of form and make a case for extending his career. Another season would have given the 37-year-old the chance to become the seventh player to reach 400 AFL/VFL games, but the temptation was easily resisted. 'After 19 years at AFL level, it feels like now is the right time to finish my career,' Boak said in a club statement. 'I'm incredibly grateful to have had the career I've had, and at a club I truly love. 'Being a one-club player is really special to me, and it's certainly not lost on me how lucky I have been.' Drafted with pick No.5 in 2006, Boak ends his AFL career as the club's all-time games record-holder, with all 384 matches played for Port Adelaide. He is the club's longest-serving captain (2013-18), a three-time All-Australian, a three-time Showdown Medal winner and a two-time club best-and-fairest winner. The veteran midfielder also represented Australia in the 2014 and 2017 International Rules Series against Ireland. Lauded as one of the greatest Port Adelaide players, Boak famously turned his back on rival offers in 2012 to remain committed to the club amid turmoil. Then, Port were propped up by AFL funds, had just won five games for the year, and sacked coach Matthew Primus after just three victories in 2011. Perennial powerhouse Geelong were keen to snare Boak, a Geelong Falcons under-18 product, but he stayed at the Power. 'The highs and lows are what makes footy exciting, and those moments are what connect a group in a significant and authentic way,' Boak said. 'Port Adelaide fans are loud, passionate and supportive. They demand success. 'And while I haven't been able to help deliver them an elusive second AFL premiership, I can't wait to sit back and watch on as this club does that for them. 'I'll forever be a Port Adelaide person, and I'll forever be grateful for this part of my life.' Hinkley, who will hand over to assistant coach Josh Carr at the end of the season, lauded Boak for his loyalty during the club's 'darkest days'. 'Coaching Travis has been one of the great privileges of my career,' Hinkley said. 'Travis has been the heartbeat of this football club for 19 seasons. 'When I think about Trav, I don't just see a great player, I see a person and leader who embodies everything Port Adelaide stands for - someone who is selfless, caring, courageous and never satisfied. 'He chose to make his stand with Port Adelaide at the end of 2012 when it mattered most, and we'll all be forever grateful for his commitment to our club.'

The coaching contenders who could replace Simon Goodwin at Melbourne

The Melbourne Football Club is on the hunt for a new senior coach, having parted ways with Simon Goodwin, only the fourth premiership coach in the club's history. 'This is a crucial appointment and one which will significantly shape the future of our club,' Demons president Brad Green said on Tuesday. Here is a list of contenders that their coaching subcommittee may consider. Nathan Buckley Collingwood coach 2012-21 117 wins, 99 losses, two draws The man who guided the Magpies into the 2018 grand final – but departed through the 2021 season – is rested and ready to return to a senior role. Now a prominent commentator, Buckley's mind remains sharp, and he has been sounded out by the new Tasmanian club. Will have learnt tremendously from his time at the Magpies. Former Demon Jordan Lewis says Buckley, 53, should be the Demons' No.1 candidate. Loading John Longmire Sydney coach 2011-24 207 wins, 122 losses, three draws Made the call to step down at Sydney after last year's losing grand final. While he tasted the ultimate success in 2012, the Swans lost four grand finals under the former North Melbourne forward. The 54-year-old remains with the Swans as executive director of club performance. It's unclear if he is prepared to move back to Melbourne or if he is ready to step back into the coaching furnace.
