Death toll rises to four in Tenkasi shelter food contamination case

Time of India13-06-2025
Tenkasi: The death toll in the suspected food contamination incident at a private shelter home in Sundarapandiapuram near Tenkasi rose to four on Friday. A 70-year-old woman, identified as Dhanalakshmi, who was undergoing treatment for severe digestive complications at the Tenkasi govt hospital, died without responding to treatment on Friday.
Meanwhile, eight more residents — Ram Lakshmi, Esakkiammal, Mariammal, Mumtaz, Karuppayi, Selvaraj, Kaliyappan, and Meenatchi Sundaram — who showed worsening symptoms, were shifted to the Tirunelveli Govt Medical College Hospital from Tenkasi GH for advanced care.
Revathi Balan, dean of Tirunelveli GH, said all eight are currently stable and receiving treatment, but one of them, Mariammal, was admitted to the intensive care unit.
"They are being closely monitored due to their age and underlying health conditions," she said.
Sources at the Tenkasi GH said early symptoms and preliminary lab reports indicate a possible E.coli infection, most likely caused by contaminated food. "All concerned departments — food safety, health, and police — will be submitting their findings to the district collector in a day," said a senior doctor.
"Many of those affected were already in a weakened state, with low immunity, which prompted the decision to shift several critical cases to Tirunelveli," the doctor added.

Pushpa Raj, designated officer of the food safety department, said, "We are awaiting three key test results on Saturday. These will be handed over to the district collector, who will decide on releasing the details to the public."
It may be recalled that three other residents — Shankar, 48, Murugammal, 45, and Ambika, 40 — died earlier this week after allegedly consuming meat-based food served at the Annai Nalvalvu Trust shelter home on Sunday night.
The shelter, which houses more than 60 residents, including the elderly and those with mental disabilities, is run by Rajendran. He was detained by the Tenkasi police on Thursday, and investigations are ongoing.

Arunachal child rights body enrols 25 specially-abled kids for Aadhaar

Itanagar: A three-day Aadhaar registration camp, organised by the Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (APSCPCR) specifically for Children with Special Needs (CWSNs), concluded on Thursday. A total of 25 CWSNs were successfully enrolled during the camp, with APSCPC chairperson Ratan Anya expressing gratitude to all stakeholders for their cooperation and successful execution of the initiative. The camp, organised in collaboration with the economics and statistics department of Papum Pare district, was held across multiple locations in the state, including Sacred Heart Convent & Day Care Centre, Toko Rehabilitation Centre in Naharlagun and the APSCPCR office at Papu Nallah. The camp had been designed to support CWSNs, registered in various special schools and therapy centres, in Itanagar and nearby areas. While marking the autism month in April, a total of 182 CWSNs were registered, of whom 112 were subsequently issued Person with Disability (PwD) certificates. Fourteen had received Unique Disability ID (UDID) cards. The UDID card is a crucial document for Persons with Disabilities in India, aiming to create a national database and streamline access to various government benefits, schemes and services. U'khand to dismiss over 230 govt docs for violating bond terms

Dehradun: The Uttarakhand health department is set to dismiss more than 230 doctors from service for violating the terms of their MBBS and MD/MS bond agreements, which they signed upon admission to govt medical colleges and which required them to serve in the state for five years or pay compensation ranging from Rs 20 lakh to Rs 30 lakh, depending on the degree pursued. The bond allows doctors to practise in other states or private institutions only after either fulfilling the five-year service condition or clearing their dues to the state to account for the subsidised cost of their medical education. However, many of those on the list were absent from duty for over five years — some of them having taken study leave and never returned — and despite repeated notices, they also did not pay the required amount, a senior health department official said. The medical education department, which oversees the functioning of the state's medical colleges, has now initiated recovery proceedings against the defaulters, who include 95 students from Haldwani Medical College, 83 from Srinagar Medical College, and 56 from Doon Medical College. Health and medical education minister Dhan Singh Rawat said the conduct of these doctors constituted both a violation of bond conditions and an act of indiscipline, adding that their names would also be forwarded to the National Medical Commission. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo "Health is a matter of public concern. It is necessary for doctors, officers, and personnel working in this department to understand their responsibilities and perform their duties in accordance with the rules," Rawat said. As of Thursday, the absence of these doctors had affected healthcare primarily in the hill districts, with Chamoli (46), Nainital (41), Tehri (29), Pauri (26), Pithoragarh (25), Uttarkashi (25), Almora (16), Rudraprayag (14), Champawat (11), Bageshwar (10), and Dehradun (1) reporting vacancies. Rawat also said that the director general of health had been directed to proceed with the dismissals, while the health secretary had been asked to seek explanations from the chief medical officers of the affected districts and from the officers-in-charge of the respective hospitals to understand why no action had previously been taken against the absentee doctors.
