A new report attempts to put hard numbers on a question hanging over every Wall Street corner office: just how much of banking work will AI actually change?
Artificial intelligence is on track to redefine 44% of the work done at banks by 2030, according to ThoughtLinks, an independent consulting firm.
ThoughtLinks — which is led by founder and CEO Sumeet Chabria, a former tech and operations COO at Bank of America and a Wall Street veteran — mapped nearly 5,000 individual banking "processes" to see which roles or units at banks will experience the most upheaval in their roles.
ThoughtLinks found that tech, engineering, and infrastructure—collectively considered one sector — would be most susceptible to transformation, with a projection of 55% of the work involved in that sector being redefined by 2030. It's a logical outcome, considering how many of the tasks in these fields are precisely the kinds that automation is best suited to handle.
Front office, client-facing sectors are hardly immune. Commercial banking could be redefined by as much as 49% by 2030, wealth management to the tune of 42%, and investment banking by as much as 33%, according to the report.
Wall Street banks are investing heavily to compete. JPMorgan has deployed a large language model suite to its 200,000 employees, while Goldman Sachs has rolled out its own ChatGPT-like sidekick, GS AI Assistant. Citigroup also last week announced a new leadership team to drive AI strategy for its nearly quarter-million workers worldwide.
It's important to note that these numbers do not reflect ThoughtLinks' predictions about how many jobs could be lost or created as a result of AI — rather, they look at how much of the work done by those who work in banks could be done differently thanks to the implementation of artificial intelligence.
To assess how much each banking process could be redefined, ThoughtLinks developed a framework that maps what bank employees do to nearly 5,000 individual "processes." "'Redefined' reflects substantial AI-enabled, process-level change via automation, resequencing, elimination, or redesign," the firm wrote in its report.
In an interview, Chabria said that breaking finance jobs down to their most basic components would be critical to understanding how to retrain workers in the face of the AI revolution. "Clearly, you've got to keep the level of agility," he said, "because things are going to change."
Chabria shared three examples with Business Insider of how he anticipates sectors to respond to AI-driven changes. We got a look at snapshots for commercial banking, investment banking, and wealth management. Take a look at what's already transforming, what will be adapted by 2030, and the parts of the job that may stay mostly in the hands of humans for now.
Commercial banking: 49% redefined by 2030
What's already being automated:
First-generation banking advisor copilot services are now live, helping bankers obtain insights on clients, quickly summarize notes or files, draft basic memos, or flag policy exceptions.
Some manual workflows — like creating spreadsheets, drafting emails, and navigating legacy systems — are being replaced. This reduces time doing manual work, as well as human error.
Customers have access to virtual AI-enabled assistants on corporate banking systems that give them personalized insights and enable them to do routine transactions more quickly.
What is expected to be redefined by 2030:
Client onboarding: GenAI will help guide client onboarding conversations and tailor explanations, while the next iteration of AI will likely be able to verify forms and assess risks.
Banks will leverage AI to assess small business creditworthiness to expand credit access.
Banks will use AI to adjust loan pricing, fee structures, and product terms based on clients' behavior, financial patterns, and market conditions.
AI tools will help detect some breaches and generate internal alerts in real time, increasing security 24/7.
What is likely to resist being redefined by AI:
Large corporate lending will still require human credit judgment and board oversight.
Banks will need to rely on legal, tax, risk, and structuring teams.
Investment Banking: 33% redefined by 2030
What's already being automated:
Drafting documents like prospectuses or pitchbooks is being digitized. Generative AI tools can now pull in some market data, past deals, financial comps, and company-branded slides to build draft pitchbooks in minutes.
Internal AI copilots are accelerating deal prep. Bankers can now use GPT-based tools to instantly summarize earnings calls, analyst reports, and client financials.
Generative AI tools can now review documents, flag missing disclosures, and summarize new regulatory changes.
What is expected to be redefined by 2030:
Banks will leverage AI to simulate investor demand or model pricing scenarios for equity and debt offerings. (Final allocation will remain human-led.)
AI will help bankers test thousands of ways to structure a deal by adjusting debt, equity, pricing, and covenants to find the right balance for clients.
What is likely to resist being redefined by AI:
Final IPO and syndicate pricing will remain human-led. Setting the price for a new issuance will require banker judgment, market feel, and live investor feedback.
Winning mandates and advising the C-suite will remain relationship-driven and led by humans, who will use AI to enhance their knowledge or judgment and land new mandates.
Wealth Management: 42% redefined by 2030
What's already being automated:
AI copilots can now answer questions, generate meeting prep docs, and summarize client portfolios — in seconds.
Financial planning is faster and becoming more scalable. Tools powered by generative AI can aid advisors in building personalized plans that simulate life events, goals, and risk tolerance without starting from scratch.
Client reporting is now becoming personalized with custom commentary on investment performance, market moves, and risk tailored to each client's portfolio.
What is expected to be redefined by 2030:
Tax management will become more automated and timely.
AI will help tailor advice and investment strategies to reflect individual preferences, financial behavior, and goals.
On the flip side, clients may use AI to manage their wealth in their own portfolio with smart triggers.
What is likely to resist being redefined by AI:
Client engagement and coaching will remain human. During market downturns or personal events, clients still want empathy, reassurance, and value judgment that only a trusted advisor can provide.

JPMorgan Sees Stablecoin Market Hitting $500B by 2028, Far Below Bullish Forecasts

The stablecoin market is poised to grow to $500 billion by 2028, according to JPMorgan (JPM) strategists, a projection that falls well short of some of the more exuberant forecasts calling for a $1 trillion to $2 trillion market cap within the same timeframe, the Wall Street bank said in a research report on Thursday. In the note led by strategist Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou, the bank outlined a more tempered view of the sector's trajectory, arguing that crypto-native demand, not broader payment adoption, remains the primary driver of stablecoin usage. 'We find forecasts for an exponential expansion of the stablecoin universe rom $250 billion currently to $1 trillion-$2 trillion over the coming years as far too optimistic," the team wrote. Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies whose value is tied to another asset, such as the U.S. dollar or gold. They play a major role in cryptocurrency markets, providing among other things a payment infrastructure, and are also used to transfer money internationally. According to the bank's analysts, roughly 88% of stablecoin demand today comes from crypto-native activity, including trading, decentralized finance (DeFi) collateral, and idle funds held by crypto firms, with payments accounting for just 6%. Even under generous assumptions, the growth of stablecoin use in payments would only marginally increase overall market size, the report said. JPMorgan also dismissed the likelihood of a large-scale shift from traditional bank deposits or money market funds into stablecoins, citing the lack of yield and added friction in moving between fiat and crypto. The firm's analysts pushed back on comparisons with China's e-CNY or the rise of Alipay and WeChat Pay, noting that these systems are centralized and not representative of how stablecoins operate. Ultimately, the bank sees moderate, crypto-driven growth as the most realistic path for stablecoins, not a mass adoption story. Some banks are more bullish than JPMorgan about the outlook for stablecoins. The Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for U.S. Stablecoins (Genius) Act is expected to be passed in the U.S. in the coming months, and that could trigger an almost 10-fold jump in stablecoin supply, investment bank Standard Chartered said in a research report in April. U.S. legislation "would further legitimize the stablecoin industry," the bank's analysts wrote at the time, adding that "we estimate this would cause total stablecoin supply to rise from $230 billion today to $2 trillion by year-end 2028."Sign in to access your portfolio

Nvidia and other large tech companies are building AI factories, creating unprecedented demand. Dell Technologies' AI server sales skyrocketed last year. Dell's AI orders continue to flow in, creating a significant -- and growing -- backlog. 10 stocks we like better than Dell Technologies › There will be many winners as infrastructure is built to support the huge and increasing computing power needed for artificial intelligence (AI) applications. Nvidia continues to pave the way and has already been a huge beneficiary thanks to its leading advanced chips, software, and engagement with developers. Nvidia's revenue has soared from what was then a record $61 billion in fiscal 2024 to more than $130 billion in its fiscal year 2025, ended Jan. 26. That growth continues as sales in the first half of fiscal 2026 are expected to be approximately $90 billion. It's all about the company's data center segment, as companies -- as well as sovereign nations -- quickly invest in infrastructure to expand AI capabilities. That infrastructure includes servers and cooling systems that are provided by Dell Technologies (NYSE: DELL). The company's revenue has also been soaring, and it is well positioned to ride AI's "golden wave" along with Nvidia. Dell isn't a pure-play AI stock, but it has already seen benefits from the AI revolution. Revenue hasn't soared quite as much as it has for Nvidia, but Dell's Infrastructure Solutions Group saw sales hit a record $43.6 billion in fiscal 2025, up 29% year over year. Zoom in specifically to its AI server business, though, and the growth is more impressive. Server shipments generated nearly $10 billion, up over sixfold from $1.5 billion in fiscal year 2024. Demand continued to grow in the company's fiscal 2026 first quarter, and the period ended on May 2 with a $14.4 billion AI backlog. Chief operating officer Jeff Clarke called the demand unprecedented, adding, "We generated $12.1 billion in AI orders this quarter alone, surpassing the entirety of shipments in all of [fiscal 2025]." That's all because of the huge data centers and AI training factories being built by large growth companies as well as sovereign governments -- all of it supported by Nvidia and its powerful products. Meta Platforms, Amazon, Alphabet, and Microsoft collectively have plans to spend as much as $320 billion this year investing to expand AI capabilities. Another group of tech companies is partnering with ChatGPT creator OpenAI for the Stargate Project, with another $500 billion in AI infrastructure investments planned over the next several years. OpenAI has also started a program intending to help regions outside the U.S. launch large AI projects. Dell servers will likely be part of most of this development. It's why the stock has quickly rebounded from its April lows. That growth is driving investors to Dell stock. But there are other reasons to own it, too. The company's Client Solutions personal computer segment is also integrating AI for commercial and retail clients. That segment provides a stable cash flow base and it generated more revenue than the Infrastructure Solutions group last year. Management is returning some of that cash flow to shareholders. It increased its annual dividend by 18% for the current fiscal year, and its board of directors approved a $10 billion increase in its share repurchase authorization. The company says it is committed to returning at least 80% of its adjusted free cash flow to shareholders. It also plans to raise its dividend at least 10% annually through fiscal year 2028. That shareholder-friendly approach should make investors feel good. Yet surging demand and a large and growing backlog for its AI servers are what really make it a good time to buy Dell stock. It has more runway ahead to ride the golden wave of AI along with Nvidia. A stable labor market fortifies the Federal Reserve's case that it does not need to be in a hurry to lower borrowing costs, keeping the central bank on course to extend its pause on interest rate cuts when it meets later this month. June's jobs report, which showed employers adding 147,000 jobs for the month and the unemployment rate ticking down to 4.1 percent, underscores the economy's resilience and helps to dispel the notion that it is in need of immediate support. 'There is no urgency,' said Priya Misra, a portfolio manager at J.P. Morgan Asset Management. 'They can keep pushing it out in the future,' she added on the timing of the Fed's next rate cut. The latest sign of a relatively sturdy labor market comes as President Trump directs a litany of attacks at Jerome H. Powell, the Fed chair, and the central bank more broadly for resisting his demands to immediately lower borrowing costs by a significant amount. Just in the last week, Mr. Trump called on Mr. Powell to resign and penned him a handwritten note blaming him for costing the country a 'fortune.' Part of the president's ire stems from the Fed keeping interest rates at current levels at a time when the government is trying to pass a massive package of tax cuts that is expected to balloon the deficit and increase what it costs the government to cover interest payments on the national debt. Already, the United States spends around $1 trillion a year to service those obligations. Mr. Powell has so far remained undeterred, telling an audience of policymakers, economists and investors at the European Central Bank's annual conference in Sintra, Portugal, on Tuesday that as long as the economy is in 'solid shape,' the central bank thought it 'prudent' to wait and collect more data about how the economy is evolving in light of Mr. Trump's policies before taking any action.
