Rugby-Toulouse edge out Bordeaux to secure third straight Top 14 crown
PARIS (Reuters) -Toulouse claimed their third consecutive Top 14 title and a record-extending 24th French championship by beating Bordeaux Begles 39-33 after extra time in a dramatic final on Saturday.
Thomas Ramos kicked two penalties in the last five minutes for Toulouse after Bordeaux's Maxime Lucu had converted a penalty on the hooter to take the game into extra time at 33-33.
A try from Anthony Jelonch and a brace from Jack Willis put champions Toulouse in control of the match but Damian Penaud, Matthieu Jalibert and Guido Petti also crossed the tryline to keep Bordeaux in touch.
Petti and Pierre Bochaton were shown yellow cards and Toulouse, missing talisman Antoine Dupont, won their 11th consecutive final, a year after routing Bordeaux Begles 59-3 in the title match.
"Emotions are unbelievable. The scenario is crazy", Jelonch said on France TV. "We were exhausted after 80 minutes, we played 100. When you see all the players' emotions, this one is the most beautiful of all."
Bordeaux's Jalibert said he was proud of his side.
"We were strong but the coin didn't fall on our side", the fly-half said on France TV. "I think we can keep our heads up. I'm proud of the team because after last year's disappointment, we wanted to come back here."
After Toulouse and Bordeaux traded penalties, the holders capitalised on Petti's yellow card to score the opening try when Jelonch found a gap in the defence.
Bordeaux responded quickly, however, when Penaud latched on to Maxime Lucu's kick to touch down.
Willis restored Toulouse's lead with a powerful finish from a driving maul just before halftime and the English flanker crossed for a second try after Jalibert had dotted down under the posts for Bordeaux.
Lock Petti kept the game alive when he went over from a wide position for Bordeaux before Lucu sent the game into extra time.
France internationals Romain Ntamack and Louis Bielle-Biarrey did not reappear after halftime, the former due to a shoulder injury while the latter was playing his first match after suffering a concussion.

Paul Pogba signs with Monaco to revive football career
PAUL Pogba has officially signed a two-year contract with Monaco, marking his return to professional football after nearly two years away. The club confirmed the deal on Saturday, bringing the 2018 World Cup winner back to the pitch following a turbulent period marked by injuries, a doping suspension, and an extortion case. Pogba, 32, has played just 12 matches over the last three seasons. His career was derailed by an 18-month doping ban after testing positive in August 2023 while at Juventus. Although his contract with the Italian club was terminated, he became a free agent in March. This move marks Pogba's first stint in Ligue 1 as a senior player. 'I am determined to get back on the pitch, mentally ready, physically ready, it's just a matter of time,' he told French television recently. The Frenchman began his career at Le Havre before joining Manchester United in 2009. After limited first-team opportunities, he moved to Juventus in 2012, winning four Serie A titles. His return to United in 2016 for a then-record €105 million was followed by struggles with injuries. Off-field issues also plagued Pogba, including a 2022 extortion case involving his brother Mathias, who was later sentenced to prison. Despite setbacks, Pogba remains a key figure in French football, having scored in the 2018 World Cup final. Monaco, who finished third in Ligue 1 last season, will compete in the Champions League, offering Pogba a platform to reignite his career.

Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall scored in a nine minute spell to take Enzo Maresca's side through after the teams had been forced off the pitch for almost two hours due to a lightning storm. Chelsea had taken the lead through Reece James in the 64th minute while Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni was sent off two minutes into injury time. But Angel di Maria scored from the penalty spot three minutes later to salvage a draw for the Portuguese side, taking the game into extra-time from where Chelsea eventually prevailed to set up their meeting with Palmeiras on Friday. Olivier Giroud set for final match with LAFC as they host Vancouver
THE Olivier Giroud era, such as it was, comes to an end Sunday night. The star French striker will play his final match with LAFC when it hosts Vancouver on Sunday. The much-ballyhooed signing of the 38-year old Giroud less than a year ago after successful tenures with Arsenal and Chelsea in the Premier League turned out to be much ado about nothing as Giroud has managed only five goals in 37 matches for LAFC. Giroud is the top goal-scorer in French national team history but simply couldn't make the mark most felt he would in MLS. He's returning to France to play for LOSC Lille. "Olivier has been a tremendous ambassador for the club on and off the field," said general manager John Thorrington. "He has been an exemplary professional." Giroud hopes for a good farewell match with LAFC (7-4-5, 26 points), which hasn't played in MLS since stopping Sporting Kansas City 3-1 on June 8. LAFC has spent the last three weeks playing in the Club World Cup, going 0-2-1 and being eliminated in the group stage. Meanwhile, Vancouver (10-3-5, 35 points) fell out of first in the Western Conference standings Wednesday night with a 5-3 home loss to expansion San Diego, which landed a point ahead in the standings. The Whitecaps have sustained consecutive losses for the first time this year. Vancouver coach Jesper Sorensen said his team needs to take initiative immediately instead of letting the game come to them. Defender Mathias Laborda is wary of the number of quality offensive threats LAFC offers, including Denis Bouanga. "They're a really good team," Laborda said. "So we expect a really good game." Bouanga has compiled eight goals and five assists to lead LAFC, while Brian White has 10 goals and a pair of assists for the Whitecaps. Even though it ceded five goals Wednesday night, Vancouver has allowed the third-fewest goals in MLS. White's two markers rallied the Whitecaps to a 2-2 draw against LAFC on May 11 in the teams' only meeting this year. — REUTERS
