Varsha Deshpande honoured with 2025 U.N. Population Award for advancing gender equality

Indian women's rights activist Varsha Deshpande has been awarded the 2025 United Nations Population Award in the individual category, in recognition of her decades-long work promoting gender equality and reproductive rights. The announcement was made by the United Nations in New York on Thursday (July 10, 2025), marking the 40th edition of the prestigious global honour. Ms. Deshpande, secretary of the Maharashtra-based Dalit Mahila Vikas Mandal, was recognised for her pioneering work over more than 35 years to combat gender-based violence and discrimination, particularly gender-biased sex selection. She founded the organisation in 1990 to champion gender justice and empower marginalised women through legal reform, education, and grassroots mobilisation. The UN lauded her leadership in community-driven advocacy and reform under India's Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, aimed at curbing the declining child sex ratio. Through her organisation, Ms. Deshpande has also worked to prevent child marriage, safeguard the rights of women in the informal sector and promote joint property registration for women. 'I am deeply honoured to receive the prestigious UN Population Award in recognition of my efforts to address gender-biased sex selection and the declining sex ratio,' Ms. Deshpande said. She described the award as a tribute to the collective efforts of individuals and institutions working for gender justice. 'Humbling and inspiring' 'I sincerely hope this recognition helps renew focus on the critical issue of gender-biased sex selection and reinforces the importance of investing in the value of women and girls. Being counted among those who have made significant global contributions is both humbling and inspiring. It deepens my sense of responsibility to live up to this honour and to uphold the trust placed in me,' she added. Andrea M. Wojnar, UNFPA India Representative and Country Director for Bhutan, said, 'Varsha's pioneering efforts to build a more equal society are truly commendable. Her dedication to addressing all forms of discrimination — whether based on gender, caste, or religion — has contributed significantly to ensuring that people, especially women and girls, can live with dignity, opportunity, and well-being. I deeply appreciate her passion and commend her courage for working on a sensitive and critical issue like gender-biased sex selection.' The UN Population Award, established in 1981, honours individuals and institutions for outstanding contributions to population and reproductive health. It includes a gold medal, a diploma, and a monetary prize.

CM calls for unity with Haryana, pushes for water re-assessment

Chandigarh: Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday emphasised the need for closer ties between Punjab and Haryana, calling the neighbouring state as a 'younger brother' and urging the Centre, especially Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to focus on strengthening relations rather than deepening divisions. Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann addressing the House on the 2nd day of the special session in Chandigarh on Friday. (Ravi Kumar/HT) Speaking in the Punjab assembly on a resolution against the Centre's decision to deploy the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at Bhakra-Nangal dam project, Mann criticised the ongoing political disputes between the neighboring states, particularly over water sharing, which has been a contentious issue for decades. 'Both Punjab and Haryana contribute more than 70% to the national food pool. However, successive political parties in both states have perpetuated conflicts, especially over water rights, despite having much in common,' Mann said. He called for a more cooperative approach to development between the two states, urging them to work together for mutual prosperity. Referring to the ongoing dispute over water resources, Mann called for a re-assessment of water in rivers flowing through Punjab, including the Ravi, Beas and Sutlej rivers, to address water-sharing arrangements with Haryana and Rajasthan. 'No review of water distribution has occurred for decades, though such reviews should be conducted every 25 years,' Mann said. The CM argued that Punjab has no surplus water to share and underscored the emotive significance of the issue for the people of the state. He also pointed out that the recent suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty could open up opportunities for utilising water from western rivers, such as the Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab, to meet Punjab's water needs. He called for the construction of new storage dams upstream of existing ones in Himachal Pradesh to increase water availability for Punjab. Support for Diljit Dosanjh In a show of solidarity with Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh, Mann defended the star against recent criticism over his role in the film Sardarji 3, which featured a Pakistani actress. Dosanjh has faced a backlash from some sections of the public, especially following the Pahalgam terror attack. Mann clarified that the film had been shot months prior to the incident, and Dosanjh should not be blamed for something outside his control. Mann also condemned the targeting of Punjabis' patriotism, noting that despite their contributions to national security and food production, they are often unfairly questioned. 'Punjab plays a crucial role in safeguarding our borders and ensuring food security for the nation,' he said. Fertile land being given to builders, alleges Bajwa Leader of the Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa told the House that 40,000 acres of fertile agricultural land in the state was being handed over to real estate developers, a move he claimed undermines the state's farming community. 'This drama by the CM will not fetch him anything. The people of Punjab know the truth,' Bajwa asserted, adding that the ruling party was not serious about protecting the rights of the state's farmers. Mann, in turn, slammed the opposition for being non-committal to Punjab's rights and dismissed their criticism as baseless.

Now, get land registered in Himachal in just one visit

Himachal Pradesh chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Friday launched a pilot project to make land registrations easier in the state. Himachal Pradesh chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu launched the pilot project on Friday. (HT) Under the 'My Deed' NGDRS (National Generic Document Registration System), citizens can submit all documents online and get land registration done in just one visit to the office concerned, saving time and effort, according to an official statement. The project has been launched in Bilaspur Sadar tehsil of Bilaspur district, Dalhousie tehsil of Chamba district, Galore tehsil of Hamirpur district, Jaisinghpur tehsil of Kangra district, Bhuntar tehsil of Kullu district, Padhar tehsil of Mandi district, Kumarsain tehsil of Shimla district, Rajgarh tehsil of Sirmaur district, Kandaghat tehsil of Solan district and Bangana tehsil of Una district. Along with this, the chief minister also launched the new format of Jamabandi, e-Roznamcha Vakyati and Karguzari initiatives to improve the revenue department's functioning and make the process more people-friendly. The format of Jamabandi has been made simpler, in easy Hindi. Old languages like Urdu, Arabic and Farsi have been removed so that common people can easily understand the land records. The e-Roznamcha Vakyati will help patwaris to keep a digital record of daily events, while Karguzari will be used to mark daily attendance online. Tehsildars will also be able to keep better track of the work being done. An online mutation register will also be linked soon. The chief minister said technology should be used to improve services and help people, to bring transparency and make revenue services more efficient. 'We should move towards a system that is paperless, presence-less and cashless so that people can get government services sitting at home,' he said. He said the present state government was committed to providing transparent and responsive governance to the people and had initiated various reforms to promote digitisation in the day-to-day working of the government. The CM also directed the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and the department of digital technologies and governance to speed up work on various digital modules to make revenue services more efficient and people-friendly. He instructed that a digitally signed Jamabandi module be developed within 10 days, so that people do not have to visit Patwarkhanas to get the 'Fard' (copy of land records). He also directed that an online, paperless revenue court management system be prepared within 15 days. This will allow people to file writ petitions online and receive summons and updates digitally, making the process faster and more transparent, he added. The chief minister also asked the NIC to develop an online mutation module within 15 days, enabling quick mutation registration and link it directly with Jamabandi records. To ensure that people get the full benefit of these digital services, Sukhu directed deputy commissioners to actively implement all these initiatives at the ground level. He also instructed them to adopt 'Khangi Takseem' in mission mode, especially for cases where land was owned jointly by two or more people. This will help move towards the concept of 'Single Khata, Single Owner', making land records simpler and clearer. Sukhu said that these digital reforms will greatly reduce the need for people to visit government offices again and again. 'These steps will help in resolving public issues quickly and provide relief to those facing difficulties,' he added.
