MOVIE REVIEW: We see if zombies are still all the rage in horror sequel '28 Years Later'

Daily Recorda day ago
Helmer Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland take things in fresh, wild directions.
It's been 18 years since 28 Weeks Later hit cinemas and in that time the zombie genre has been, pardon the pun, done to death - in film and TV.
Director and writer Danny Boyle and Alex Garland faced a challenge, then, to inject fresh blood into the returning franchise.

They manage to achieve this through engaging storytelling and character development that get ever more wild as events proceed.

Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and his son Spike (Alfie Williams) are part of group of survivors of the rage virus living on a small island.
The pair head to the mainland on a mission that leads to self-discovery and mystifying secrets.
In terms of style and execution, Years is a very different movie to its predecessors and Boyle and Garland bravely don't rest on their laurels by taking a few chances.
From the brisk, nail-biting opening being introduced by the Teletubbies' hopeful spiel on a TV, Boyle gets very creative behind the camera.
He hasn't lost the ability to shoot a white-knuckle-ride set-piece either; zombies pursuing Jamie and Spike across the causeway is suspense at its finest.

The sound design and music are hypnotically superb, with the chilling use of Rudyard Kipling's poem Boots found in the flick's trailer a welcome inclusion.
It's hard to fault any of the performances either. Taylor-Johnson and Williams share a tight-knit, loving bond that is put to the test, Jodie Comer has many poignant moments as Jamie's wife Isla, Ralph Fiennes ( Dr Kelson) is a magnetic, enigmatic presence and Christopher Fulford's Sam is a calming, down-to-Earth companion.
I had heard the climax was insane and divisive - and boy, is it - but I'm willing to see what the second part of Boyle's new trilogy - January's The Bone Temple - delivers before passing too much judgement.

Because, as a whole, 28 Years Later is a wonderfully directed, mesmerizing return to a rage-filled world not shy of hope, personal growth and madness in all its forms.

Outlander fans 'screaming' over closest look at Blood of My Blood spin-off yet

New images of the Outlander prequel series, Blood of My Blood, have been released, showing an even closer look at the cast of the forthcoming spin-off Outlander enthusiasts have been tantalised with yet another snapshot of the highly-anticipated prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood. On Monday (7th July), The Hollywood Reporter exclusively unveiled a fresh array of snapshots featuring the primary cast members of the forthcoming prequel. ‌ These images offered an unprecedented glimpse at key secondary characters who will stand alongside stars Harriet Slater, Jamie Roy, Hermione Corfield, and Jeremy Irvine. ‌ The lineup reveals Sam Retford as Dougal MacKenzie, Conor MacNeill taking on Ned Gowan, and Tony Curran stepping into the shoes of Lord Lovat, Jamie Fraser's (played by Sam Heughan) grandfather. Set partly within the historical context of 18th Century Scotland, the new ten-part drama on Starz will see Slater and Roy portray the young iterations of Jamie Fraser's parents, Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser, reports the Scottish Daily Express. Additionally, Corfield and Irvine are set to depict Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp during the First World War era, playing the roles of Claire Randall's (Caitriona Balfe) parents.. Social media platforms buzzed with excitement as eager fans flooded Instagram comments to voice their support for the latest casting news. A fervent admirer gushed: "Excuse me while I go scream!" in response to the development. ‌ Another enthused commenter stated: "Thank you for sharing! I can't wait to watch the blood of my blood!" While one more added: "Everything seems to indicate that it's going to be a great series. Best of luck." One eager fan commented: "Oh I cannot wait. And I can wait for outlander season 8 because once it comes, then that really is the end." ‌ The forthcoming prequel's synopsis reveals: "The series will center on these two parallel love stories set in two different time periods, with Jamie's parents in the early 18th century Scottish Highlands and Claire's parents in WWI England." ‌ Devotees have precisely a month to wait as the inaugural episode of Blood of My Blood will debut on Friday, 8th August. Fortunately, this initial 10-episode series won't be the last we see of Brian, Harriet, Julia and Henry as the spin-off has already been commissioned for a second series. There's also the eighth and concluding series of the original Outlander to anticipate, which will officially conclude Claire and Jamie's historical escapades. However, author Diana Gabaldon is still penning the 10th and reportedly final novel in her original series, A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out, ensuring there's plenty more Outlander content to look forward to in the years ahead.
