The flood situation in Assam not only remains grim but is worsening by the hour. On Monday the water levels rose alarmingly in many parts of the state. The India Meteorological Department's Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati has said that heavy to very heavy rainfall has been predicted at a few places and extremely heavy rainfall in isolated places. A late-night June 1 report by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said that two more people had lost their lives in Cachar and Sribhumi districts, while around four lakh people are reeling from the deluge across 15 districts. The total number of people who have lost their lives in this year's flood and landslides has already increased to 20. At present, 764 villages are under water and 3,524.38 hectares of crop areas have been damaged across Assam. In 2016, BJP had promised to make Assam 'flood-free'. In 2022, the home minister reiterated this promise. Looking at the visuals from the so-called 'Smart City' Guwahati, one is reminded how the Prime Minister and his double-engine governments have betrayed Assam.

Neglect is also a form of violence
Once again, Assam is drowning, not just in water but also as regards official apathy. Every year, floods wreak havoc, displacing thousands and taking several precious lives. Yet, the state remains woefully unprepared. Temporary shelters and relief camps are not long-term solutions. Where are the sustainable flood-control strategies? Is disaster preparedness merely a monsoon ritual? It's time we moved beyond press statements and acted on the ground. Flood victims deserve more than pity; they deserve protection, planning, and policy reform. Let the government be reminded: neglect, too, is a form of violence.

Act now to prevent Covid spread
The gradual rise of Covid cases across India is a cause for major concern. The authorities should closely monitor the situation as a measure of gearing up for any eventuality. The surfaced number of infected cases is only the tip of the iceberg. As the present strain is not as virulent as before, people are ignoring it. So many cases have gone untested and unnoticed. But the people should be persuaded to follow respiratory etiquette and norms to contain the infection's spread. The extreme weather conditions that are prevailing can aggravate the situation as there could be a rise in viral infection cases. The authorities are expected to focus on preventive and curative aspects of an epidemic, before it's too late.

Life sentence is a real eye-opener
The life sentence (30 years) given to A Gnanasekar in the Anna University sexual harassment case is a welcome and historic decision. It brings a long-awaited justice to the victim and sends a strong message to the society that no one, irrespective of his/her power or position, can get away after violating someone's dignity in a place of learning. This verdict shows the firm stand of the judiciary in giving a voice to the oppressed and holding the guilty accountable. Even if justice is delayed, it is not denied. This case sets a powerful example that when institutions, law, and society stand together, justice speaks louder than words.

Politicians should stop Op Sindoor rhetoric
Apropos 'Op Sindoor should not be used to derive political mileage' (The Hans India; June 2), it was undertaken in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack by Pakistan-trained terrorists. It wasn't a war for territorial gains but a stern warning by India, which has run out of patience from successive terrorist attacks by Pakistan-trained terrorists. Through Operation Sindoor, India. Which substituted 'turn-the-other-cheek' policy with that of 'fire-for-fire' said that 'enough is enough' unequivocally to her ill-meaning neighbour. It was executed by committed armed forces, who risked their lives. The government, which ordered and controlled the operation, and the opposition, have no business to either to gloat over it or criticise the same just for electoral gains. The well-controlled operation which harmed no Pakistani civilian, but dismembered her terror factories, stands for national honour, and not for political mechanisation.

Mamata Banerjee increases financial grant to Durga Puja committees in West Bengal to ₹1.10 lakh
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday announced that the government will provide ₹ 1.10 lakh to each of the approximately 40,000 Durga Puja committees across the state, PTI reported. Banerjee addressed a meeting of Durga Puja organisers, stating that the decision is intended to help the committees in managing Bengal's largest festival and to recognise their role in cultural and community life. 'The government stands by the people. Durga Puja is not just a religious celebration; it is a cultural festival that unites everyone. We want to ensure the organisers can manage expenses without stress,' Banerjee was quoted as saying. She also recalled the evolution of grants, which began with ₹ 10,000 in 2018 and were increased in response to inflation and rising costs of celebration. In 2019, the grant rose to ₹ 25,000, doubled to ₹ 50,000 during the COVID-19 pandemic, and increased to ₹ 85,000 in 2024. Along with additional financial aid, Mamata Banerjee declared that various government agencies and civic bodies, including the Fire Brigade, Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), panchayats, and municipalities, would not impose any taxes or service charges on the Puja committees. 'This year, no fees will be charged by the fire brigade, civic bodies or any other state-run service provider. We are standing by you so that you can organise the Puja without financial stress,' Banerjee said. She also asked the Puja organisers to assist migrant workers coming back to the state. 'I would request Puja committees to help the migrants who are coming back after being tortured. Let's come together and offer them relief and respect,' she said. Banerjee has been alleging that migrant workers of West Bengal are facing torture in BJP-ruled states. One of the most-awaited festivals of West Bengal, Durga Puja, a UNESCO-recognised cultural heritage event. Prior to the announcement, Banerjee was reportedly scheduled to chair a meeting with several Durga Puja committees from across the state at the Netaji Indoor Stadium, PTI reported. Zojila tunnel deadline pushed to 2028: Here's why Asia's longest tunnel project is delayed
Zojila Tunnel: Zojila tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir will provide an all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Ladakh. Strategically located at an altitude of 11,578 feet, the road project is being constructed in the challenging Himalayan terrain. On completion, the project will not only play an important role in the country's infrastructure development but also enhance civilian and military mobility in the region. This under-construction project is set to become India's longest road tunnel and Asia's longest bi-directional tunnel. Over 60 per cent work of Zojila tunnel has been completed. The project initially targeted to be completed by 2026 will take two more years for fully completion. While replying to a question raised by Lok Sabha MP Mian Altaf Ahmad, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in a written statement on July 31 said that the current physical progress stands at 64 per cent. Ahmad, the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference leader, also enquired about the expected completion date of the Zojila Tunnel project. He also requested details regarding the project's total estimated cost and the expenditure incurred so far. Responding to this, Gadkari said: 'Zojila Tunnel Project in Jammu & Kashmir commenced with an initial scheduled completion date of September 29, 2026. However, he stated that this ambitious project will be completed by 2028. 'The current physical progress stands at 64%, and the project is now targeted for completion by February 2028,' he said. Zojila tunnel is being constructed at a cost of Rs 6,809 crore, out of which an expenditure of Rs 3,934.42 crore has been incurred so far. The Zojila Tunnel project aims to make travel on the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh section of NH-1 safer by eliminating the threat of avalanches. However, with the project's completion now pushed to 2028, it raises an important question: why has this crucial infrastructure project been delayed, and what are the reasons behind the setback? In a statement, Gadkari highlights several issues behind the delay including adverse weather conditions. This tax was created during a chaotic time when energy prices were soaring after Covid and Russia invaded Ukraine. Its main purpose wasn't to raise funds for the government. Instead, it was designed to act as a strong warning to energy companies. The idea was to stop them from making decisions that could cause them to fail, which would then leave the public to deal with the mess and costs. Think of it as a legal threat to prevent big problems, rather than a way to get tax money. Why Was It Introduced? According to The Metro, the 2022 Finance Act introduced PIBPT to prevent large businesses specifically those with over 100 million pounds in turnover-from shifting or cashing in valuable energy contracts just before an energy supplier entered administration. Such practices, according to HMRC, would have pushed massive costs onto the government and consumers and potentially disrupted the energy supply. A Tax Used As A Warning Experts believe the tax filled a gap left by slow-moving regulators like Ofgem. Dan Neidle, founder of Tax Policy Associates, called it "a weird measure" that used taxation in place of timely regulation.
