NY Giants Rookie Makes Major Statement on Social Media
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. As the New York Giants enter the 2025 NFL season, one of their first-round rookies makes one thing clear: they are not to be viewed as a rookie. Abdul Carter took to Instagram to send a clear message to the NFL. "Year 1, I ain't no rookie," Carter wrote on his personal Instagram account. "[I've] been playing this game a long time. Ball is ball. I love this [expletive]." The Pennsylvania native took his talents to his state's top school for his NCAA run. At Penn State, Carter started nearly half of his games as a freshman. He collected 56 tackles and 6.5 sacks through his first season at the NCAA level. Read More: NY Giants' Offseason Grade Makes Shocking Claim About One Move By the time he reached his sophomore season, Carter started all 13 games for the Nittany Lions. His production took a slight dip, as he picked up 48 tackles and just 4.5 sacks. Collecting 16 games of action last year, the numbers were back up in a big way. Carter ended up totaling 68 tackles. He got to the quarterback for 12 sacks, and he forced two fumbles throughout the year. Although Carter's fandom of the Philadelphia Eagles led many to believe his hometown team would attempt to work wonders to get him after they won the Super Bowl for the second time in franchise history, there was no trade-up to one or two for Philadelphia. Carter was on the board when the Giants went on the clock with the third-overall pick. It was a no-brainer selection for New York, which already has a stellar pass rush. Read More: NFL Writer Places Russell Wilson on NY Giants' Hot Seat Although Carter is just technically a rookie on paper, he doesn't believe his lack of NFL experience should have him overlooked. The early reports that came from spring practice suggested he's had a dominant presence and has already looked as good as advertised—if not better. This week, Carter will join his fellow rookies in reporting to the Giants' training camp for the first few days. On July 22, the rest of the team is expected to report, joining Carter and the group of rookies after they get their feet wet. Carter's first game opportunity will come on August 9, when the Giants will pay a visit to the Buffalo Bills for an afternoon kickoff. Flood of congratulatory messages after Jelena Dokic goes public with wonderful news
Jelena Dokic has received an outpouring of messages on social media after going public with her new relationship with Yane Veselinov. The Australian tennis hero has been spotted with Veselinov a number of times over the last few weeks, but 'hard-launched' the relationship on Instagram on Monday evening. Posting a photo of her and her partner both beaming, Dokic wrote: "You are my calm, safe, peaceful and happy place. So glad I found you." Grand slam champion Kim Clijsters posted a love heart emoji in response, while cricket presenter Erin Holland wrote: "COULDN'T LOVE THIS MORE." Hollywood actress Megan Gale posted three heart emojis, while another follower commented: "Best news of the year! Happy for you both." View this post on Instagram A post shared by JELENA DOKIC 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺 (@dokic_jelena) Dokic is a former World No.4 who has become one of Australia's most popular commentators and analysts. She previously dated Tin Bikic for 19 years, and was left heartbroken when the relationship ended in 2022. She recently opened up on her desire to start a family, and flagged the possibility of adopting children as a single mum. 'I was in a relationship for almost 19 years from the age of 20 and right when we split up, we were about to start trying for a family," she admitted. 'Maybe one day will I adopt? Possibly. It's something I would love to do because I love kids. 'I love kids and I know even if I were a single mum, to be honest, and I adopted one day, it would have all the love in the world. I would love to have a father as well, but I know I can give it absolutely everything and (it) would have all the love and support and I would be completely different. 'I always said I wanted to have kids, but I want to adopt. So that's a big wish of mine and passion and I hope to do it one day.' Dokic has opened up a number of times over the years about the horrific abuse she suffered at the hands of late father Damir, which is the subject of her award-winning documentary. Damir died in May after being estranged from his daughter for the last 10 years. In a brave and emotional social media post, Jelena admitted to "conflicting and complex" feelings about Damir's death and said "it's never easy losing a parent and a father, even one you are estranged from." Damir inflicted physical and mental abuse on Jelena while he was her coach, and at one stage made her change allegiances from Australia to Yugoslovia against her will. View this post on Instagram A post shared by JELENA DOKIC 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺 (@dokic_jelena) "As you know my relationship with my father has been difficult and painful with a lot of history," she wrote after his death. "Despite everything and no matter how hard, difficult and in the last 10 years even non existent our relationship and communication was, it is never easy losing a parent and a father even one you are estranged from. "The loss of an estranged parent comes with a difficult and complicated grief. It's an end of a chapter and life as I know it. There are lots of conflicting and complex emotions and feelings for me. "For the end of this chapter, I choose to focus on a good memory like this picture (she posted from her youth). And as always and especially important to who I am as a person and what I want to stand for which is respect, grace, kindness, dignity and empathy, I will and want to be that person in this situation too." Victor Wembanyama cleared for return after scary blood clot: ‘The hardest part is over'
NBA teams beware: Victor Wembanyama is back. After getting shut down midway through his sophomore season with the Spurs due to blood clotting in his shoulder, the 7-foot-3 phenom has been officially cleared to resume playing basketball. 'I'm officially cleared to resume,' Wembanyama told French reporter Maxime Aubin of L'Équipe, according to a translation. 'It's fresh, I only got the approval from the Spurs medical staff a few hours ago (Friday). Advertisement 3 Victor Wembanyama has been at NBA Summer League and spoke to French reporter Maxime Aubin to confirm that he's been cleared to return to basketball. AP 'Phew, I'm finally going to be able to play a little basketball again! My injury was an adventure, obviously, but the hardest part is over. I'm much better today, physically and mentally.' Wembanyama's blood clot discovery was made Feb. 20, when the Spurs announced he was suffering from deep vein thrombosis and immediately shut him down for the season. Advertisement 3 Victor Wembanyama has been sidelined from basketball since Feb. 20 due to deep vein thrombosis in his shoulder. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post The 21-year-old was averaging 24.3 points and 11 rebounds per game for the Spurs as they owned a 23-29 record at the time of his diagnosis. San Antonio wound up with a 34-48 record and missed the playoffs. In the recent months of his recovery journey, Wembanyama took trips to Costa Rica, Japan and China — where he participated in a 10-day retreat at a Buddhist temple, made waves on social media and wound up becoming 'officially part of the 34th generation of warrior monks of the temple.' 'It was very hard,' Wembanyama told Aubin of the retreat. 'We discovered movements we had never done in our lives. It was more than 1,000 kicks a day, jumps, balance exercises, stretching. Advertisement 'We were using muscles we rarely used and which were quickly overloaded. I had some of the biggest aches and pains of my life,' Wembanyama continued. 'It was even too much at one point. We had to slow down.' While Wembanyama's absence last season contributed to the Spurs missing the playoffs, he feels that now the team is actually ahead of schedule in legitimately competing this season. Advertisement 'I think my injury accelerated things,' the French big man said. 'Even though I wouldn't wish it on anyone, the reflections and questioning caused by such an injury can't be bought. I think it's an experience we'll benefit from in the future. For next season, I hope we qualify for the playoffs.' 3 Victor Wembanyama looks on during the San Antonio Spurs' game against the Washington Wizards. AP When Wembanyama returns to the court, he'll be joined by a strong Spurs core with major potential. One-time All-Star De'Aaron Fox, reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle and 2025 No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper will hold down much of the ball-handling duties, while San Antonio also added Carter Bryant in the draft who has shown tris tremendous defensive prowess in the Summer League and could pair well with the defensive phenom that Wembanyama already is.
