Family of motorcyclists killed in Santa Cruz Mountains crash seeks answers

The family of a Hayward couple is seeking answers after a head-on crash with a Tesla killed the pair as they were riding a motorcycle on a winding highway in the Santa Cruz Mountains on Saturday.
The couple's daughter identified the pair as Ernest Latta, 61, and Lisa Latta, 59.
'They were opposites, but they were the best pair,' Christina Gonzales Latta said of her parents. 'They were like French fries and ice cream.'
She added: 'The love they had was the strongest I've ever known.'
The couple was riding a Harley-Davidson south on Highway 9, south of Highway 35, around 4:45 p.m. when the motorcycle and a northbound Tesla Model 3 collided head-on, the California Highway Patrol said. The impact threw the couple onto the road, where they died.
The Tesla driver, an 18-year-old San Jose woman, was not injured, the CHP said.
As of Wednesday, no one was arrested and the crash remained under investigation, the CHP said. The agency released few other details.
Gonzales Latta described her step-father as an avid motorcyclist who prioritized safety, especially with her mom on the bike. 'He's a protector,' Gonzales Latta said.
For that reason, Gonzales Latta suspects the Tesla driver was at fault, she said, adding that she wonders whether the driver was texting or speeding.
'I don't know why my mom and dad are gone,' she said. 'It's very hard.'
She said she believes her parents, who were together for 40 years, were headed to Santa Cruz to eat at a nice restaurant. The couple commonly rode to coastal cities on weekends. With a shared love for the ocean, Santa Cruz and Monterey were among their favorite destinations, Gonzales Latta said.
She remembered her step-father as a quiet, humble, intelligent and adventurous man. Her mother was loud, thoughtful and caring, she said.
Lisa Latta had her when she was 17. 'We grew up together,' Gonzales Latta said.
The couple met in San Jose when Gonzales Latta was 2 after her mother relocated from Staten Island in search of a better life for Gonzales Latta and her brother. Their family later grew when Ernest and Lisa Latta had a son.
Gonzales Latta said something felt wrong Saturday after her parents did not come home to pick up their 7-month-old Yorkie, named Arlington. Concerned for her parents, Gonzales Latta called hospitals across the Bay Area. It wasn't until authorities called her and referred her to the Santa Cruz County coroner the next day that she learned the tragic news.
She said she hopes for justice for her parents. For now, she feels a sense of peace because 'they're always going to be together now,' she said.
As for Arlington, Lisa Latta's brother took him in. 'For him, that's a piece of her,' Gonzales Latta said.
The family created a GoFundMe page to raise funds for funeral expenses. Gonzales Latta said her immediate priority was to make arrangements for her parents' funeral. 'After I lay my parents to rest,' she said, 'I need answers.'

Vince McMahon Crashes Bentley Continental GT Speed Into BMW, Cited for Reckless Driving

According to police, McMahon was behind the wheel of a 2024 Bentley Continental GT Speed on July 24 when he collided with a BMW 430 on the Merritt Parkway in Westport, Connecticut. State troopers claim they were trying to stop McMahon for speeding when he rear-ended the BMW at reportedly 80–90 mph, sending debris across the median and damaging a third vehicle - a Ford Fusion - in the crash resulted in no serious injuries, though all three vehicles were towed. McMahon was cited for reckless driving and following too closely, and is scheduled to appear in court on August 26. According to Connecticut State Police, the 79-year-old was cited for reckless driving and following too closely after he rear-ended a BMW 430i on the Merritt Parkway in Westport on July 24. Witnesses say McMahon was traveling between 80 and 90 mph in a 2024 Bentley when he struck the BMW, sending both cars careening off the road and damaging a third vehicle, a Ford Fusion, in the opposite was seriously injured, though all three vehicles were towed. McMahon is due to appear in court on August 26. McMahon, driving solo in his Bentley - a car that starts at around $274,000 - reportedly made no attempt to brake. Barbara Doran, the 72-year-old driver of the BMW, claimed in a Facebook post that the impact sent her car nearly 100 yards off the road and that she was left "shaken" but unharmed. Airbags deployed in the Bentley and both vehicles sustained heavy irony? Just last week, Tesla and Volvo were lauded for their safety performance in new IIHS crash tests. But when human behavior trumps engineering, even a $270K luxury GT won't save you from being a headline. Especially not in a country where drivers in some cities crash every three years, on average. McMahon stepped down from TKO Group (the parent company of WWE and UFC) earlier this year following a sexual assault lawsuit - which he denies. The crash comes as another black mark on a public profile already under heavy high-profile car crashes continue to spark lawsuits elsewhere. Tesla is being sued after three family members were killed in a 2024 Model S accident in New Jersey, putting its "Autopilot" system back in the firing line. In that case, like McMahon's, the question is whether the driver - or the car - was ultimately to blame. The Bentley Continental GT Speed isn't just fast - it's a missile. With a 6.0-liter W12 engine, 650 horsepower, and a 0–60 time of 3.5 seconds, this isn't a car built for poking around Connecticut backroads. It's built for Autobahns - and for McMahon, he got plenty of the crash took place just hours before the death of WWE legend Hulk Hogan was confirmed - a man who shared decades of televised brawls and legal fights with McMahon himself. While the WWE veteran did post a tribute to Hogan shortly afterward, he has yet to comment publicly on the of now, McMahon hasn't been charged with any additional offenses, and no civil suits have been blamed the brakes. But with a Bentley? It's just an old billionaire in a hurry. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Illegal migrant — not deported despite multiple DUI and domestic violence raps — allegedly kills mom, 11-yr-old daughter in horrific wrong-way crash

An illegal immigrant from Mexico was allegedly drunk behind the wheel of a speeding SUV that crossed into incoming traffic and crashed head-on into a compact car, killing an innocent woman and her bright-eyed 11-year-old daughter, New Jersey authorities said. Raul Luna-Perez, 43, has been living in Red Bank, N.J., since early 2023, federal sources told The Post. When and where he allegedly snuck into the U.S. is not known. The suspect has been roaming free despite two DUI arrests in March and April, and a domestic violence arrest in 2023, according to records. 8 Maria Pleitez and Dayanara Cortes were killed in a head-on crash July 26. 8 Photos from the scene show the mangled front-end of Pleitez's car. Y Smith/TLS 'Governor Murphy and his sanctuary policies released this serial criminal into New Jersey communities,' Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told the Post Friday. 'Now, this innocent family is shattered by their failed leadership. 'President Trump and Secretary Noem will continue to do everything in their power to remove these criminal illegal aliens before they destroy more lives.' Luna-Perez's Dodge Durango slammed into Maria Pleitez's Nissan Sentra in the horrific July 26 wreck in Lakewood, NJ, according to local prosecutors. The 42-year-old mother was killed instantly. Her youngest daughter, Dayanara Cortes, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, perished soon after arriving at the hospital. A second, unidentified 11-year-old girl riding in the back seat at the time of the 11:20 p.m. collision, was also injured and rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. She has since been upgraded to stable. Luna-Perez walked away with minor injuries. His two passengers sustained minor injuries, for which they were treated and released. 8 Raul Luna-Perez is a Mexican national. Ocean County Corrections 8 The crash killed Pleitez instantly, while Dayanara died moments after arriving at the hospital. Y Smith/TLS Because he was showing symptoms of intoxication at the crash scene at Cross Street and Hearthstone Drive, blood was drawn from Luna-Perez at the hospital, authorities said. He was later charged with two counts of vehicular homicide and assault by auto. Charges could be added once prosecutors receive the blood test results. In a sad irony, the mother he allegedly killed immigrated from El Salvador years ago. It is unclear if her children were born in the U.S. A GoFundMe campaign is raising money to pay for the bodies to be transported to El Salvador for burial. 'My aunt was a wonderful woman who worked hard everyday to take of care her 2 daughters,' her niece, Maria Celina Aguilar, wrote on the GoFundMe page, which has raised close to $30,000. The mother and daughter are survived by Dayanara's 16-year-old sister, the niece said. The suspect remains in custody at the Ocean County Jail in Toms River on an active ICE immigration detainer, according to online jail records. 8 Dayanara only recently celebrated her 11th birthday. 8 A photo shows police tape encircling Luna-Perez's crumpled SUV. Y Smith/TLS Luna-Perez has been a scofflaw for years, records show. Why he remained in the U.S. after being charged with crimes multiple times is a mystery. New Jersey prosecutors would not even discuss his immigration status, citing state disclosure laws He was arrested in 2008 by Red Bank cops for disorderly conduct. He was charged with assault on Jan. 2, 2023, following a violent incident in the same shore town. That same month, Luna-Perez was busted — again in Red Bank — for leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage, and failure to report an accident. He was later ordered to pay a $970 fine. His rap sheet includes an arrest in June 2023 for domestic violence. The details surrounding that incident were unavailable. Shockingly, Luna-Perez was twice collared for DUI within a month this year, yet continued to walk — and drive — free. He was busted March 20 after a traffic stop on River Street in Red Bank. On April 17, he was stopped by police and again charged for DUI. Prosecutors said Luna-Perez does not yet have a lawyer. 8 The mother and daughter will be buried in El Salvador. 8 Luna-Perez seemed drunk at the crash scene, authorities said. Y Smith/TLS While Red Bank has never declared itself a 'sanctuary city,' officials there adopted a 2017 resolution stating its support for migrants. Under the direction of Gov. Phil Murphy, New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal issued a directive in 2018, turning the Garden State into a sanctuary state. In recent years, Republican lawmakers have implored Murphy to 'reevaluate' the state's position on the classification. Since 2018, New Jersey has had a statewide Immigrant Trust Directive, with new mandates designed to foster cooperation and 'strengthen trust between law enforcement officers and immigrant communities.' One of those bars police from even questioning suspects about their immigration status.

Tesla (TSLA) Ordered to Pay $242.5M after Fatal Autopilot Accident

A Miami jury has ruled that EV maker Tesla (TSLA) is partly responsible for a 2019 crash that involved its Autopilot system, and ordered the company to pay $242.5 million in damages to the family of the victim and an injured survivor. The award includes $42.5 million in compensatory damages and $200 million in punitive damages, which was below the $345 million sought by the plaintiffs. The case was heard in the Southern District of Florida and began on July 14. Elevate Your Investing Strategy: Take advantage of TipRanks Premium at 50% off! The lawsuit focused on a fatal accident in Key Largo, Florida, where Tesla owner George McGee was driving his Model S with Enhanced Autopilot engaged. McGee dropped his phone and reached down to retrieve it, believing the system would automatically brake for obstacles. Instead, the vehicle accelerated through an intersection at more than 60 mph, crashing into a parked car and striking its owners, 22-year-old Naibel Benavides and her boyfriend, Dillon Angulo. Benavides died at the scene, while Angulo suffered multiple broken bones, a traumatic brain injury, and lasting psychological harm. Plaintiffs' attorney Brett Schreiber argued that Tesla marketed Autopilot as safer than human drivers and failed to limit its use to highways, which effectively turned public roads into test tracks. Interestingly, the verdict comes as Tesla CEO Elon Musk works to convince investors that the company's autonomous driving technology is safe and has the potential for robotaxi fleets. Despite the news, Tesla shares fell only slightly on Friday and are down 25% year-to-date. What Is the Prediction for Tesla Stock? Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Hold consensus rating on TSLA stock based on 14 Buys, 15 Holds, and eight Sells assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. Furthermore, the average TSLA price target of $310.84 per share implies 2.8% upside potential.
