Claims Ireland is anti-Semitic 'defamatory and untrue'- Senator McDowell
The US Ambassador to Israel, Mick Huckabee, launched a scathing attack against the Irish Government for progressing the Occupied Territories Bill. The bill would prohibit trade between the State and Israel's illegal settlements in Occupied Palestinian Territories.
Mr Huckabee called the bill, which was introduced by Independent Senator Frances Black, 'so stupid' and asked if it could be attributed to an act of 'diplomatic intoxication'. Taking to X, he wrote: 'Did the Irish fall into a vat of Guinness & propose something so stupid that it would be attributed to an act of diplomatic intoxication? It will harm Arabs as much as Israelis. Sober up Ireland!'
He then asked Ireland to call the Israel Foreign Ministry to 'say sorry'. This comes as former minister for justice Alan Shatter heavily criticised the bill as it was given consideration at the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs on Tuesday.
As a member of the Ireland Israel Alliance, the former Fine Gael TD repeatedly referred to the bill as a 'Father Ted' measure. He also compared it to how the Jews were targeted during the Second World War.
In the Seanad yesterday, Senator McDowell said claims that Ireland, its Government, or its Houses of Parliament were motivated by, or amounted, to anti-Semitism 'were grossly defamatory and untrue'.
He added: 'Our position on Gaza is shared by many Israeli Jews, including a former Israeli Prime Minister. It is simply defamatory and untrue to assert that Ireland's position on Gaza and recognition of the Palestinian state was motivated by anti-Semitism or hatred of Jews.'
Many US politicians have been highly critical of the bill in recent days, including Republic senator Lindsey Graham. He said: 'I hope that Ireland will reconsider their efforts to economically isolate Israel, as they are in a fight for their very existence.
'I do not believe these efforts would be well received in the United States and they certainly would not go unnoticed.' Republican congressman Pete Stauber said Ireland 'must reconsider' the Occupied Territories bill.
Taking to X, he wrote: 'Ireland is making a serious mistake. Banning the import of goods from Israeli businesses operating in the West Bank and East Jerusalem is not only antisemitic, but it also has serious ramifications for American businesses.'

Eoin Hayes readmitted to Social Democrats after eight-month suspension
Eoin Hayes has been readmitted to the Social Democrats after an eight-month suspension over incorrect statements about shares he held in a company linked to the Israeli military. Mr Hayes said he should have not held the shares as long as he did and has donated the equivalent of €43,443 to three aid organisations working in Gaza. He said the amount reflected the increase in the value of the shares he held over the course of Israel's military offensive in Gaza. The Social Democrats won 11 seats in November's election but Mr Hayes was indefinitely suspended from the parliamentary party in December – just a month after being elected. He had initially told the media and his party colleagues that he divested shares in his former employer, Palantir Technologies, prior to being elected to Dublin City Council last June. The company supplies technology to Israel's military. But he later revealed that he sold the shares last July – after taking office – for a pre-tax figure of €199,000. The Social Democrats had been calling for economic sanctions against Israel months before Mr Hayes' election to the council. The Dublin Bay South TD's suspension was reviewed by the national executive of the party before being considered further by the parliamentary party. Just after 6.30pm on Friday, the Social Democrats said his suspension had been lifted. It said in a statement the decision was made by acting leader Cian O'Callaghan in line with the party's constitution. "Eoin has been suspended from the parliamentary party for nearly eight months and I believe he should be given a second chance," Mr O'Callaghan said. "Eoin has a lot to offer as a Social Democrats TD and I look forward to working with him." "I also want to be clear that I should not have held the shares for as long as I did. "For that reason, I have donated $51,000 to three humanitarian organisations active in Gaza – split between UNRWA, Unicef and Doctors without Borders. "This figure represents the uplift in share price, less applicable taxes, from October 7 2023 to July 26 2024, when I sold the shares. "I know I have let people down and I am determined to work hard and earn back people's trust." Eoin Hayes readmitted to Social Democrats after suspension
Dublin Bay South TD Eoin Hayes has been readmitted to the Social Democrats following a near eight-month suspension, the party has said. Mr Hayes was suspended from the Social Democrats' parliamentary party last December after he confirmed that he sold his shares in software company Palantir Technologies for just under €200,000. The Social Democrats said he provided incorrect information to the media about the sale of shares in Palantir, his former employer. Mr Hayes had taken his seat in the Dáil as an Independent. In a statement this afternoon, Mr Hayes apologised for giving "incorrect information to the media". He added that he "should not have held the shares" as long as he did. Speaking this evening, Social Democrats' deputy leader Cian O'Callaghan said he believed Mr Hayes "should be given a second chance". He said: "Eoin has been suspended from the parliamentary party for nearly eight months and I believe he should be given a second chance. "Eoin has a lot to offer as a Social Democrats TD and I look forward to working with him." Mr Hayes had faced questions over his divestment of shares in the company which supplies artificial intelligence tools to the Israeli military. He said he received 7,000 shares as part of his employment package with the company. Mr Hayes sold them in July last year for a pre-tax figure of €199,000. He won the final seat in the Dublin Bay South constituency in the 2024 election in what was a major gain for the party.
