Family planning surgeries dip at Madurai UPHCs
Family planning operation theatres going defunct in UPHCs temporarily are among the reasons cited for the decline.
Health department officials told TOI that three UPHCs under Madurai corporation, at Sellur, K Pudur, and Ansari Nagar, which are upgraded community health centres, have facilities for performing family planning surgeries such as vasectomy and tubal ligation. The number of family planning surgeries performed at the three UPHCs came down from 173 in 2022-2023 to 57 in 2024-2025 till March.
In fact, only 18 family planning surgeries were performed at K Pudur UPHC during the period, and the operation theatre was defunct for a while.
At Ansari Nagar UPHC as well, only five family planning surgeries were recorded in 2024-2025.
Health activist A Veronica Mary said the decline not only leads to more referrals to Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) but often discourages people from opting for family planning surgeries.

"Access to getting family planning surgeries done should be made easy. People will not be willing to skip work for travel or wait for days to get appointments for such surgeries, which is what generally happens at GRH," she told TOI.
"In private hospitals, family planning surgeries cost up to Rs40,000 or more, which some cannot afford," she said. She added that more specialist doctors need to be appointed and all UPHCs in the city should have facilities for the surgeries.
Currently, there are only two anaesthetists and two gynaecologists appointed by Madurai corporation.
City health officer (CHO) Dr P Indira said that until March 2025, only the operation theatre at Sellur UPHC was fully functional for family planning procedures. "We have now revived two more family planning operation theatres—at the UPHCs in K Pudur and Ansari Nagar. The K Pudur UPHC operation theatre became operational by the end of April, with around five family planning surgeries completed so far, including three vasectomies.
In June, we also revived the Ansari Nagar theatre. With this, three UPHC operation theatres are now active in the city for family planning services, and people can approach them," she said.

Disabled TNPSC aspirants forced to wait four hours for scribe form
MADURAI: A group of visually impaired people who would be appearing for TNPSC Group 2 examinations waited for more than four hours in the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) ophthalmology department on Monday to get approval in a form which would help them get scribes. They returned empty handed as the HoD had gone to the medical college. Sources said the HoD's signature was not mandatory and that there has been a miscommunication between staff and the group. The aspirants have been told to come back on Tuesday. Speaking to TNIE, M S Srikant (26) said, 'I am blind by birth, but that did not deter me. I completed MA and BEd, and will be appearing for the TNPSC group 2 exam. But the department has sought approval in a form, which will help to get a person (scribe) to assist me in writing the exams. Along with a group of friends like me, I arrived at the Ophthalmology Department around 9 am, and was told by the staff to wait. Around 11.30 am, we were taken for eye test and then made to wait for some more time. Around 1 pm, the staff mentioned that the scribe form should be signed (approved) by Head of Department (Ophthalmology), but she had gone to Madurai Medical College (MMC) and we were told to come on Tuesday.'

Of 1.4L+ docs in Maha, only 10k opt in for ‘KYD' QR code scheme
Nagpur: Despite Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) launching a forward-thinking initiative to help patients verify doctors and curb quackery, response from the medical fraternity is far from encouraging. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Out of over 1.4 lakh registered medical practitioners across the state, only about 10,000 have signed up for the 'Know Your Doctor' (KYD) initiative and received their personalised QR codes, meant to be displayed at their clinics for public verification. This means that a vast majority of clinics still do not provide patients an option to quickly and easily verify whether their doctor is a genuine, licensed professional — something crucial especially in rural and vulnerable areas plagued by fake medical practitioners. Speaking to TOI, MMC administrator Dr Vinky Rughwani from Nagpur said, "This initiative is extremely helpful to patients. They can just scan the QR code displayed in the clinic using their smartphone, and it will directly take them to the MMC portal, where all verified details of the doctor — including specialisation — are available." Maharashtra was the first state in the country to launch such initiative to counter quackery, and after us, many other states as well as councils like homeopathy and ayurveda followed suit. "I appeal to all registered medical practitioners in Maharashtra to come forward and participate in this drive," said Dr Rughwani. Recently, Maharashtra health minister Prakash Abitkar informed the state legislative assembly that the govt is considering making this QR code registration mandatory for all doctors in the state in order to combat the growing menace of quackery. Fraudulent doctors and unlicensed clinics remain a persistent threat to public health in Maharashtra, particularly in districts with limited healthcare access. Patients often fall prey to unqualified individuals posing as doctors. The QR code initiative gives people a powerful, easy-to-use tool to protect themselves — but only if doctors participate. Until more doctors adopt the initiative, patients are urged to look for the KYD QR code in clinics, scan it before proceeding with consultations, and spread awareness about the importance of verifying medical credentials.

Milk testing flags LSD early; 355 cases reported in 11 dists of state
SLUG: FRESH WAVE Ahmedabad: Gujarat is facing a fresh wave of lumpy skin disease (LSD), with 355 confirmed cases and eight animal deaths reported as of Monday, sparking renewed concern among farmers and veterinary officials. This is the second major outbreak in three years, with the 2022 episode having claimed around 1,500 livestock, mostly in the north Gujarat region. Officials from the state animal husbandry department said that early detection of the virus was made possible through proactive ground-level surveillance, especially by testing milk samples for viral and bacterial presence at the source. This form of milk-based disease surveillance served as a critical early warning signal, according to sources in the department. Currently, 28 cases were active, mainly in Tapi, Surendranagar, Botad, and Ahmedabad districts. Of the total 355 cases recorded across 104 villages in 11 districts, officials reported that 90% of the infected animals have recovered, 8% are under treatment, and 2% have succumbed. The eight reported deaths include five in Surendranagar, two in Surat, and one in Navsari. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Dr Falguni Thakar, director of the state's animal husbandry department, told TOI that while the situation is less severe than in 2022, it remains serious. "The current strain shows low virulence and infectivity. Most fatalities have occurred among sub-adult animals that missed vaccination due to age criteria," she said. More than 6.29 lakh cattle were vaccinated across the state, with vaccinated animals showing minimal infection, Thakar added. Officials have urged farmers and cattle rearers to ensure timely vaccination of all livestock to avoid further spread or loss. The outbreak also puts the spotlight on the state's broader One Health initiative—an integrated approach that monitors human, animal, and environmental health. As part of this, Gujarat has implemented wastewater and air surveillance for the early detection of pathogens, while milk sampling is helping flag potential disease outbreaks in livestock. In Ahmedabad, wastewater monitoring is already in use to track early signs of Covid-19. Similar methods applied to milk are proving instrumental in detecting diseases like LSD. Govt sources confirmed that genetic analysis was underway to determine whether the current virus strain matches the one that wreaked havoc in 2022. With growing concerns over recurring livestock diseases and their economic impact, officials stress that ongoing surveillance, vaccination, and rapid response are crucial to preventing another large-scale crisis.
