Safe standing to 'recreate atmosphere of old days'
Safe standing areas at the MKM Stadium will "take fans back to the old days of terraces but far more safely", officials have said.
The football and rugby league ground, which is home to Hull City and Hull FC, has been adapted for 2,600 standing places in the north and east stands, which will be used be home and away supporters.

Fans tested system during a Super League match between Hull FC and Castleford Tigers in June and gave it "positive reviews".
Peter Curry, safety and security manager at the MKM Stadium, said: "It's a bit like going back to the olden days, it's not quite a terrace because you have to stand in front of a designated seat, but it's much safer."

Premier League and Championship clubs have been allowed to introduce safe standing areas since the start of the 2022-23 season.
The galvanised steel rails form a barrier to the row of seats in front, allowing fans to stand during matches. The system also allows them to sit down if they choose to without affecting their view.

Mr Curry said: "Fans will see very little difference to how the stadium looked before, but it will change their experience.
"There's no question that in the old days of standing on the terraces at Boothferry Park there was a much better atmosphere. This recreates that but takes the danger away and I'm pleased it's finally arrived."

Officials at the stadium said the system would not have an impact on disabled supporters or those who prefer to sit. Stewards and first aiders have also been given training to work in safe standing areas.
Mr Curry added: "Other clubs like Leeds and Sheffield United already have it and we've learned from them.

"From a safety point of view, we won't have to worry about people falling when they're celebrating and we hope it will give fans confidence.
"This is a significant development for our ground and we want people to enjoy it."
The introduction of safe standing at the Anlaby Road ground followed consultation with the Sports Ground Safety Authority and supporters' groups.

HKS star Mahoney wins title at G Camp
A young martial arts fighter from HKS Thaiboxing Club in Horwich has won a British title belt. Libby Mahoney, who hails from Adlington, also has the role of instructor at the club off Emmett Street. The 20-year-old made the short trip to G Camp, in Manchester, to compete alongside another HKS competitor, Bolton's Alexia Moores. It was a tough five rounds but she got the decision to make her parents and all her clubmates at the gym proud. Mahoney has been training at HKS Thaiboxing for 11 years and teaching for five. She did a few inter clubs when she started Thai boxing, then decided she did not want to fight but enjoyed the sport. However, in February this year she decided to get back into the ring and her British belt proves it was the right move.

‘Much more than football' – Portugal pays respect to Diogo Jota at Euro 2025
An hour before kick-off for Portugal's UEFA Women's Euro 2025 group stage match against Spain and eyes begin to gravitate towards Wankdorf Stadium's west stand towards a large piece of cardboard fastened to the bottom of the upper stand. 'You took the name of Portugal beyond borders,' it reads in earnestly sprawled black marker ink. 'Now it's our turn to raise your name.' Advertisement The placard's unfurling was silent yet arresting, much like the news it was in response too: Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva's, 26, tragic passing in a car crash in the early hours of Thursday morning in Spain. In the fading afternoon heat, a small group of Portugal fans walked to Bern's northern flank in mini-pilgrimage, hoisting placards as tribute to Jota and Silva, chanting their names into the sky. If the day was not poignant enough, the evening's match-up against Spain added further texture, with the Porto-born forward's last career game coming against Spain in the men's Nations League final earlier this summer. As kick-off beckoned, more placards appeared, attempting to voice the parts of loss and love that feel inexpressible in these moments. The teams emerged from the tunnel wearing black armbands. The minute's silence was adhered to with haunting reverence, then broken into loaded, rapturous applause. Behind Ines Pereira's goal, Portugal fans held aloft a series of cards spelling out the message: 'Descansa Em Paz Diogo Jota' (rest in peace Diogo Jota), before chanting his name once again. A handful more chances came, none taken. And still Wankdorf Stadium heaved with Portuguese song, as if any other noise outside of a goal celebration might border on sacrilege.
