Landlady shot in the leg during pub brawl

News.com.au3 days ago
This is the horrifying moment a gunman opened fire during a pub brawl, injuring the landlady.
Bonita Page, 55, was attempting to resolve a fight outside The Red Lion in Wath upon Dearne, near Sheffield in England's north, when she was shot in the leg in June 2024.
The gunman, Oliver Corney, 35, received a 16 year and nine month sentence at Sheffield Crown Court.
He will spend 11 years and nine months in prison, with a five-year extension on licence the BBC reported.
Judge Jeremy Richardson KC said he 'narrowly avoided a life sentence' after he 'wrecked [Ms Page's] life'.
Video footage released by South Yorkshire Police shows the terrifying moment Corney opened fire outside the busy pub.
Corney cannot be seen in the video, but four men in the street can clearly be seen confronting him.
Meanwhile, Ms Page leaves the beer garden, passing through a gate to speak to the men.
Several individuals begin to crowd around the gated fencing while the group of men flinches backwards as a shot is fired.
One of the men charges at Corney as he begins firing the gun.
Ms Page can then be seen limping back in to the pub garden.
Once the footage is slowed down, a bullet can be seen hitting Ms Page's upper leg moments before she flinches in pain.
It left her needing surgery to repair the muscle damage in her leg.
Following the attack, Ms Page gave up her licence and is yet to return to work.
She still suffers from leg pain, as well as heightened anxiety and PTSD.
On June 28, 2024 a fight over drugs had broken out between two pub-goers.
After hearing about the disagreement, an intoxicated Corney arrived at the scene.
During a confrontation outside the pub, Corney then fired the gun three times.
While he was aiming at one of the men, he accidentally shot Ms Page as she attempted to resolve the fight.
Corney fled the scene, getting rid of the gun and asking his partner to dispose of his clothes.
The judge told the court that she would be honoured with a bravery award at a ceremony during a later date.
The gunman had a long history of convictions, including violence, sex offences, firearms and drugs offences.

‘Absolutely devastating': Bus driver allegedly stabbed in neck during Sunshine Coast attack

A 67-year-old Sunshine Coast bus driver was allegedly stabbed in the neck during a violent altercation at a Caloundra bus station. Emergency services were called to Caloundra Station, near Cooma Tce and Latona Ave, at about 11.30am on Saturday following reports of a fight between two men. Police allege the altercation between a 44-year-old Parrearra man and the older man, a working bus driver, escalated into a stabbing, leaving the 67-year-old with serious injuries. He was assessed by paramedics at the scene before being taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a serious but non-life-threatening condition. According to the Transport Workers Union, he underwent surgery to close the laceration on his neck on Sunday and is now recovering. The 44-year-old man was arrested and charged with serious assault of a person over 60, acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm, and possession of a knife in a public space. He was due to face Caloundra Magistrates Court on Monday. The attack has reignited calls for improved safety measures for Queensland bus drivers, with the TWU demanding the immediate reinstatement of the Bus Safety Forum, a statewide initiative scrapped by TransLink and the Queensland government. In a statement released on Monday, the TWU said the incident was the latest in 'a string of violence' affecting public transport workers, claiming there had been 'countless incidents and five high-profile attacks on drivers and passengers in as many months'. TWU Queensland director of organising Josh Millroy said this latest assault was 'absolutely devastating'. 'TransLink and the state government's decision to scrap these safety forums, without any consultation with drivers or their union, is a disgrace,' Mr Millroy said. 'Five serious assaults since March and countless more incidents of aggression and verbal abuse shows the urgency of this issue.' He said the forum had been the 'only structured platform' where drivers, unions, operators and government bodies came together to confront issues facing the public transport industry. 'Removing the forum removes transparency. It silences driver voices. It strips workers of a vital avenue to influence decisions that directly impact their safety,' Mr Millroy said. The union said it had written to Transport Minister Brent Mickelberg more than a month ago, but hadn't received a response.

Video shows underground anti-Israel group threatening violence against Lovitt Technologies

A disturbing video is circulating across social media that appears to threaten violence against Australians working at aerospace company Lovitt Technologies. The unverified video shows a person speaking in a digitally altered voice and dressed completely in black. The person calls the message 'an anonymous communique' from the 'cell' that torched and vandalised three cars on the Lovitt lot in Melbourne on July 5. CCTV of the incident shows five hooded offenders entering the business just before 4am, setting fire to the cars. In the video, the person says the vandalism was not 'an accident'. 'This is a clear and serious threat,' the person says. 'If you continue making weapons or components of any kind there will be consequences. Consider this a warning.' The person then reveals anti-Israel, anti-American and anti-Australian sentiment underpins the group's actions. 'After 21 months of an accelerated genocide against the Palestinian people by the illegitimate Zionist entity, eight decades of American warmongering and imperialism, 2½ centuries of the most violent colonial oppression, ethnic cleansing and murder of Aboriginal peoples across so-called Australia, Lovitt Technologies has chosen its place at the intersection of these catastrophes,' the person says. The group is targeting Lovitt because it supplies components to defence and aerospace companies Lockheed Martin, BAE and Boeing, the person says. The person then threatens violence against the company's workers and suggests his group has been 'watching' Lovitt's employees and collecting personal information on them. 'Every worker in this supply chain is complicit,' the person says. 'You have had years to contemplate the consequences of your actions. We will decide your fate as you have decided the fate of millions. 'For the past few months, we have been closely watching you. We have your addresses. All the information we have about you will be distributed to our underground networks. Stop arming Israel or else.' The person ends the video by saying 'every colony will burn'. 'Death to Israel. Death to Australia. Death to America. From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,' they say. Victoria Police has confirmed it is investigating the July 5 attack and now the video. 'The matter is now being investigated by the Victorian Joint Counter Terrorism Team, which includes personnel from Victoria Police, the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation,' a Victoria Police spokeswoman told NewsWire on Monday. 'Investigators are aware of a video which has been circulating where a group has claimed responsibility for the incident. 'This video is being reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation. 'Police have already released CCTV of five people they would like to speak to in relation to the incident. Each person was dressed in black hooded jumpers, backpacks and gloves.' Police said there were as yet no links between the July 5 act of vandalism at Lovitt and other criminal acts that hit Melbourne over that weekend, including the arson attack on the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation synagogue. Executive Council of Australian Jewry co-chief executive Alex Ryvchin said the group's video and message resembled 'an al-Qaeda terror cell'. 'It doesn't matter that they think they're doing something just and righteous – Islamist terrorists and neo-Nazis think that too,' he told NewsWire. 'What matters is that we remain a country of laws and not allow bands of zealots to decide what is a legitimate target for violence and criminal acts. 'Today it is a business they oppose and tomorrow it will be individuals, politicians, journalists or religious institutions they deem impure. 'We expect this incident to be investigated and for those responsible to be met with the law.'

Inside the ‘weird' family of would-be Trump assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks

He grew up in a home filled with silence and was raised by a dad who acted like a ghost. Thomas Matthew Crooks, the 20-year-old gunman who nearly assassinated Donald Trump spent his childhood in a strange, emotionless environment dictated by a 'very strict' father, according to a relative. On July 13, 2024, Crooks opened fire on Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pa., before he was shot dead by a Secret Service sniper. His motives and background have largely remained a mystery, but his first cousin Mark Crooks, 44, this week gave The Post a glimpse into his family's odd and anti-social behaviour. The last time Mark saw Thomas, his sister and their parents was in March 2019 at their grandfather's funeral, where the future assassin and his sibling stood next to parents Matthew and Mary. 'It's like they were under strict orders. Like, they didn't budge. It was really weird. We all said that,' Mark recalled. Shortly thereafter, Matthew 'pretty much told us, 'You'll never see us again,'' Mark said – and they didn't. Mark had no idea what Thomas liked to do in his later teenage years and had no clue that the college science/engineering student was struggling with mental health issues. The estranged cousin also know that he was building homemade bombs in the months leading up to the shooting. He claimed that Matthew Crooks, 54, did everything in his power to keep his family apart from his brother Mark Sr.'s family, even though both broods lived in Pennsylvania within an hour's driving distance. 'My uncle kept to himself.,' he said. 'He was like that his whole life. He didn't want to be bothered by anybody. He kept his family away from us our entire life pretty much,' Thomas lived with his parents and older sister, Katherine, in a small, three-bedroom home in suburban Bethel Park. The homicidal Crooks travelled 50 miles to the Trump rally, climbed onto a rooftop 130 yards from the stage where Trump was delivering a speech, and began shooting with an AR-15 rifle. He fired eight times, grazing the former president in the ear, killing rallygoer Corey Comperatore, 50, and seriously wounding David Dutch, 58, and James Copenhaver, 75. When the call came in about his younger cousin's violent act and demise, Mark felt 'mixed emotions' and ultimately sad about it. 'I was sad about it, but not as sad as you would be if you knew your family, knew your cousin and hung out with him. 'I was more sad afterwards, thinking about his sister and how she was taking it, and for his mom and dad,' he explained. Matthew and Mary Crooks did not respond to requests for comment by The Post. Since the shooting, the family has become more reclusive - refusing all media interviews and ignoring relatives. 'My dad reached out to my uncle, his brother, multiple times. He left him messages and this and that and my uncle just doesn't get back to him. But that's not unusual,' Mark said.
