Major row in Canada as Ontario says it will give its own work permits, won't need federal government's nod
Ontario premier Doug Ford announced that he will issue work permits to asylum seekers bypassing the federal government, as he can do that using a clause written in the Constitution.
Ford said they don't need to wait for the federal government as the asylum requests pile up -- leading to a major row as Canadians fear that the asylum system will be abused in Ontario, leading to an influx of cheap foreign labor.
Ford said this was pointed out by Alberta Premier Danielle Smith at the three-day summit of the nation's leaders that Section 95 of the Constitution gives provinces the right to make decisions on immigration.
Alberta has been seeking independence from Canada for quite some time now.
Ford said his administration will start issuing work permits as there are a huge number of asylum seekers who want to work. 'I have a tremendous amount of asylum seekers that are up in Etobicoke in the hotels, they're healthy, they're willing to work, they're hardworking people, but they're waiting over two years and they're just sucking off the system — not their fault,' Ford said.
'The fault falls under immigration that it takes over two years to get a work permit.'
The premier's office said there was no timeline for when the province could start issuing work permits and nothing has been finalized yet, Global News reported. But Ford has given clear direction that internal work to figure out how to grant work permits should begin. 'They want to get out there and they want to be like every other Canadian,' Ford said. 'They want to find a job, they want to be able to first start off renting a condo or part of a house and then buying a house.
'
In 2024, more than 90,000 people made asylum claims in Ontario. Ontario's unemployment rate is 7.80 per cent.

Congress slams govt for ‘institutional sabotage' over Justice Yashwant Varma impeachment
New Delhi: The Congress on Saturday accused the government of " institutional sabotage " for refusing to admit the Opposition-backed impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Varma in the Rajya Sabha , while proceeding with a similar motion in the Lok Sabha signed by both ruling and Opposition MPs. Senior Congress leader and lawyer Abhishek Singhvi said the Centre had ignored former RS Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar's move to make the Opposition motion "property of the House" before his resignation. He warned that the government's conduct could give Justice Varma procedural grounds to challenge the impeachment. He also linked the episode to Dhankhar's abrupt resignation, questioning if he was forced out and if MPs were pressured to sign additional papers. Singhvi added that the Congress had first raised corruption allegations in the Varma case, while the BJP was silent. Live Events Singhvi further alleged double standards, pointing to the government's inaction on a pending impeachment notice against Justice Shekhar Yadav over hate speech. He said the AICC legal department would hold a conference on August 2 on challenges to the Constitution.

Assembly, LS polls may be held after delimitation exercise: Ex-MP
Hyderabad: Former MP and BRS leader B Vinod Kumar has predicted that the Telangana assembly elections in 2028 and the Lok Sabha elections in 2029 will be held with enhanced seats after the delimitation of assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He also said that women's reservation will be implemented in the next elections. Addressing a press conference at Telangana Bhavan on Saturday, Vinod Kumar dismissed rumours that there would not be a delimitation of seats in Telangana in the wake of the Supreme Court's dismissal of a petition seeking the delimitation exercise in the state on the lines of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday. As per the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014, the Telangana assembly seats should be increased to 153 from the present 119, while AP seats to 225 from the current 175 seats. "As per Article 170 sub-clause 3 of the Constitution, the delimitation exercise should be taken up in 2026. The SC dismissed the petition filed by one Purushottam Reddy a couple of days ago. But SC delivered the judgment as per Section 26 of the AP Reorganisation Act, subject to the provisions of Article 170," the ex-MP said. In the AP Reorganisation Act, instead of 'subject to' it should have been 'notwithstanding' to take up the delimitation of seats in both Telangana and AP 10 years ago. This issue was brought to the notice of the then UPA govt and also the Modi govt, but it was not taken up by both the govts, Vinod Kumar said. On women's reservations in legislative assemblies and Parliament, the BRS leader said the Women's Reservation Bill was passed in both Houses and would come into effect only after the completion of the Census.

BJP not fit to govern India: MLC
Mangaluru: Congress MLC Ivan D'Souza said that the BJP misused the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for political purposes, disregarding the country's Constitution. In response, a protest will be organised against the BJP, he told reporters here on Saturday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "The BJP is not fit to govern the country. The Supreme Court highlighted the misuse of the ED, which exposed the BJP's true nature. The name of CM Siddaramaiah's wife was misused in the Muda scandal through the ED. There was no money laundering or financial transactions in the Muda case. So, how can accusations be made against the CM's wife?" he questioned. The ED has no right to intervene in civil cases, as affirmed by the Supreme Court, the MLC said. "Given this, how is the ED investigating Congress leaders like DK Shivakumar and G Parameshwara? We will approach the court against the central govt for misusing the ED," he said. Accusing Union home minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of being directly responsible, the MLC insisted that if JD(S) and BJP leaders have any sense of honour, they should apologise, and those in power should resign. "After the state govt implemented the five guarantees, the per capita income of the state's people increased. The finance minister stated this in writing in the Lok Sabha. Let the BJP explain where the people have suffered due to the guarantee schemes, as they claim?" he said. He questioned why Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, leader of opposition in council, and R Ashoka, leader of opposition in assembly, are silent.
