Labour Surprises in Scotland With Win Over Farage, Nationalists

Bloomberg06-06-2025
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer's Labour Party won a Scottish parliamentary by-election, a surprise result that deals a blow to both the Scottish nationalists and Nigel Farage's Reform UK party.
Labour's Davy Russell won the vote in Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse, denying Farage's populist party its first electoral victory in Scotland and setting back the Scottish National Party, which runs the semi-autonomous government and held the seat since 2011.

Where is Epstein's island? Trump said he ‘never had the privilege' to visit

President Donald Trump denied ever visiting late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein's private island in one of his "very good moments." Trump was in Scotland answering questions from reporters on July 28 as the controversy over the criminal case files on the financier indicted on sex trafficking charges continues to roil his administration. Epstein owned a small private island in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where sex trafficking of young girls allegedly occurred. 'I never had the privilege of going to his island, and I did turn it down, but a lot of people in Palm Beach were invited to his island," Trump said. 'In one of my very good moments, I turned it down. I didn't want to go to his island.' Where does the island fit in the Epstein saga? Here is what to know: More: Trump says poached Mar-a-Lago spa staff included Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre What happened at Epstein's island? In January 2020, prosecutors with the U.S. Virgin Islands filed a lawsuit against Epstein's estate, alleging a criminal enterprise took place on his property there involving the sexual abuse of young girls. "Epstein owned and arranged for private planes, helicopters, boat and automobiles to transport victims to, from and within the Virgin Islands, and provided money to pay these young women and underage girls," the lawsuit stated. Numerous girls forced into his scheme were 12 to 17 years old, the lawsuit alleged, stating local authorities last observed related events happening in 2018. A web of companies owned by Epstein, dubbed the "Epstein Enterprise" by prosecutors, "deceptively lured underage girls and women into its sex trafficking ring with money and promises of employment, career opportunities and school assistance." One 15-year-old girl tried to escape by swimming, the lawsuit states. The estate settled the case with the U.S. Virgin Islands for $105 million in December 2022. More: Jeffrey Epstein, a survivor's untold story and the complexity of abuse Where is the Epstein island located? The island Epstein owned was in the U.S Virgin Islands. Epstein also owned property in New York and Palm Beach, where federal U.S. prosecutors also allege sex trafficking occurred. Ghislaine Maxwell eyes clemency as MAGA calls for Epstein transparency Trump has been dealing with questions and controversy over Epstein for weeks, with members of both parties calling for more transparency about the man's criminal case. Trump has called for the release of more documents, but one federal judge in Florida has already denied the request to unseal grand jury transcripts. The backlash has also led the Department of Justice back to Epstein's ex-partner Ghislaine Maxwell for more information. She is serving a 20-year prison sentence for trafficking a minor to Epstein for sexual abuse. She spoke with DOJ officials over two days last week, and Trump has not yet ruled out a pardon. Trump and Epstein shared a friendship for years, as they were both part of the Palm Beach, Florida, community, where Mar-a-Lago is located. 'I wouldn't talk to Jeffrey Epstein because he did something that was inappropriate. … He stole people that worked for me. I said, 'Don't ever do that again.' He did it again, and I threw him out of the place,' Trump said, in reference to his Mar-a-Lago club and residence. 'Persona non grata." Agent's alleged attempt to smuggle wife on Trump's Scotland trip being probed in latest Secret Service fiasco

President Donald Trump dished on the "strange story" stemming from reports that a Secret Service agent attempted to smuggle his wife onto a Secret Service cargo plane accompanying the president on his trip to Scotland, as the Secret Service kicks off an investigation into the incident. Trump told reporters that he had just heard about the alleged incident, which he labeled a "weird deal" and said that the agency was handling the matter. "I don't know, that's a strange one. I just heard that two minutes ago. I think Sean's taking care of it … Is that a serious story?" Trump told reporters on Air Force One Tuesday, appearing to reference Sean Curran, Secret Service director. "I don't want to get involved, it's a strange story," Trump said. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital on whether Trump had been briefed on the matter or on the investigation. Real Clear Politics first reported that a Secret Service agent attempted to smuggle his wife aboard a Secret Service cargo aircraft during Trump's travels for his Scotland trip. When asked about the report, the Secret Service told Fox News Digital a personnel investigation is underway. "The U.S. Secret Service is conducting a personnel investigation after an employee attempted to invite his spouse - a member of the United States Air Force - aboard a mission support flight," a Secret Service spokesperson said in a Tuesday statement to Fox News Digital. "The aircraft, operated by the U.S. Air Force, was being used by the Secret Service to transport personnel and equipment," the spokesperson said. "Prior to the overseas departure, the employee was advised by supervisors that such action was prohibited, and the spouse was subsequently prevented from taking the flight. No Secret Service protectees were aboard and there was no impact to our overseas protective operations." The Secret Service has come under scrutiny following the aftermath of the July 2024 assassination attempt against Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. In that incident, 20-year-old gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks fired eight bullets at Trump from a rooftop during a campaign rally. One bullet grazed Trump's ear, and the gunman killed Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old firefighter, father and husband attending the rally. Additionally, another man was apprehended and charged months later with attempting to assassinate Trump at his Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. Both incidents are under investigation, and a bipartisan House task force that investigated the Pennsylvania attack determined the episode was "preventable," and that various mistakes were not an isolated incident. Since these episodes, the Secret Service has implemented a host of changes to its agency to beef up its security practices. Specific steps taken include expanding the use of drones for surveillance purposes, and overhauling its radio communications networks and their interoperability with Secret Service personnel, and state and local law enforcement officers.

Cumbernauld town centre evacuated as church fire continues

CUMBERNAULD town centre has been evacuated due to smoke from a nearby church fire. The B-listed St Mungo's Trinity Parish Church has been destroyed after a fire which broke out on Saturday night. Fire crews have been in attendance since, with local residents evacuated as a precaution. Now The Centre, a large brutalist structure containing more than 100 retail units, has been evacuated too. It is understood that the decision was made for health and safety reasons, as the surrounding areas are very smoky from the ongoing blaze at St Mungo's. It is not clear when people will be able to access The Centre building again. "It smells really smoky everywhere," one person evacuated told The National. The latest fire comes after another blaze ripped through the historic Cumbernauld Cottage Theatre just last week.
