‘Beachfront Barry' releases memoir, Positive Living

The Citizen11 hours ago
Popular and controversial in equal measure, former Ballito nomad Barry Godwin has recorded his life story in a memoir titled Positive Living.
The book was launched at Ekhaya Guest House on Saturday afternoon, at an event hosted by Richard Finch of the Ballito Book Readers Club. Around 30 people attended and, after asking questions of Godwin and enjoying a reading from the book, each left with a signed copy.
'His story is incredible, you are going to laugh and cry, but above all, you are going to think,' said local photographer Barry Bowditch, who was instrumental in helping Godwin publish the book.
'I would like to thank my wife Denise, who spent thousands of hours translating Barry's beautiful handwriting into type,' he added, noting that it was left unchanged from the original handwritten notes, errors and all.
Godwin was long a fixture on the Ballito beachfront with his dog Rasta, and has experienced both temporary and long-term homelessness since 1991, along with time spent in prison. He now lives on a farm outside Dundee.
'If I sleep in a tent, in my rondawel or outside, I enjoy my life being simple,' said Godwin.
'I couldn't be more comfortable – in my mind.'
Positive Living is available for R200 if collected from Bowditch, who can be contacted at 082 256 0006. Delivery fee extra.

The cast of Reddford Housse Northcliff were Super Troupers

After three love-struck nights of Reddford House Northcliff transporting audiences to a small Grecian Island – where disco music, dance, and love are the currency – it was time draw the curtain on the school's Music, Art, Dance, and Drama (MADD) departments staging of Mama Mia!, which came to an end on August 1. 'Thank you to my team for keeping me grounded, and to the amazing cast that excelled themselves.' He shared how the learners gave up their weekends, to make sure this production was the success it was. 'Thank you all for stepping up.' He also extended a heartfelt thanks to Caryn Brinkley, the school's principal, for allowing them the opportunity to bring this production to life. 'I think we could, quite possibly, be called the mad department, because we drive the school a little bit crazy at times. So, thank you Ms Brinkley for putting up with that.' He also gave great mention of the support the community at large gave towards the production. Adding their department loves the work they do and are so passion about it. 'So, we will see you again next year for another Reddford major production.' Follow us on our Whatsapp channel, Facebook, X, Instagram, and TikTok for the latest updates and inspiration!

Grannies football tourney founder launches new online show

LIMPOPO – Touching and transforming lives is what Beka Ntsan'wisi does best, and now, she is doing it again through social media. Affectionately known as Mama Beka, she is the founder of the Grannies International Football Tournament. Now she has returned to broadcasting with a new online show that is already reaching thousands of viewers across Facebook and TikTok, recently surpassing one million views. Her new programme, Katekani na Mama Beka, is a motivational talk show featuring pastors and inspirational speakers who aim to uplift and encourage audiences. Mama Beka says the show was born out of public demand; longtime fans of her former radio show Sisumuka u Vangama on Mughana Lonene FM urged her to start her own platform. The show airs live every Thursday from 18:00 to 19:00, and on Sunday mornings from 07:00 to 08:00. It also includes live performances by local musicians such as singer Felicia Majozi and keyboardist Mohale Majozi, among other notable artists. 'It was never my plan to start this kind of show again,' she admits, 'but people kept asking for it, and my younger brother, filmmaker Sam Ntsan'wisi, encouraged me to seize the opportunity.' Widely regarded as 'the mother of the nation,' Mama Beka has launched a new initiative, the Va Mhani Football Tournament, catering to women aged 30 to 50. An international edition of the tournament is scheduled for March next year in Mexico, with teams of women from across the globe expected to participate.
