Fruit, family and football: meet the small trader with big dreams
IPOH : Despite being a person with disabilities, Muhammad Irwani Amirsirifuddin is determined to succeed each day.
Having lost his right leg below the knee in an accident some time ago, the 33-year-old from Kampung Pulau Padang Bota Kiri in Parit, Perak refuses to rely solely on government aid or public donations.
The seventh of 10 siblings has taken the initiative to earn a living by selling fruits from his three-wheeled motorcycle around Bota, near Parit, stopping at well-populated eateries.
'As long as I'm able to move, I'll continue to use my strength to earn a living for myself and my family,' he told Bernama when met here.
Irwani – who is fondly known as Wan Sekerat, which literally translates to 'Half Wan' – leaves home in the morning to collect fruits from local suppliers around Bota Kiri and Titi Gantung, before making his rounds between 11am and 2pm and staying for 10-20 minutes at each eatery.
'It is mangosteen and rambutan season. The response has been very encouraging: I can sell 40-50kg of fruit a day, with mangosteens priced at RM10 per kg and rambutans at RM9,' he told Bernama.
He shared that he had sold fish in his village from 2018 before switching to fruits in 2022 upon realising the demand from customers.

'People who stop in Bota are often from out of town. So, when they see fruits that can be easily peeled, they tend to buy them,' said Irwani, who earns around RM1,500 a month.
Recounting how he lost his right leg in 2015, he revealed that it had happened on the way back to Bota after a kayaking activity in Pasir Salak.
'I was born with a right leg that didn't function properly – it was limp and dangling – and on the way back, I was riding pillion with a friend. Perhaps I was tired, but I didn't realise that my leg had slipped into the rear wheel.
'I was admitted to Manjung Hospital and, on my second day there, I asked the doctor to amputate my leg below the knee because it couldn't be saved.'
Despite the incident, Irwani has never lost hope: instead, it has fuelled his determination to keep working and avoid becoming a burden to his family.
'I could rely on the monthly assistance of RM450 I receive from the social welfare department, but that's no reason for me to sit at home and do nothing. We shouldn't let our disabilities be an excuse to remain idle,' he said.

And in spite of his physical limitations, Irwani's ambition remains strong: he actively plays football as part of the national amputee football team Harimau Kudung, under the Malaysian Amputee Football Association (Mafa).
'I've been involved in sports since 2018 and became more active in 2022. I'm currently preparing for the Amputee Football World Cup Qualifiers in Jakarta this November.
'People with disabilities are not only capable of being independent but can also contribute meaningfully to society and the nation.
'Most importantly, never let your limitations become a barrier to success. With effort, prayer, and trust in God, success will come,' he concluded.

GEORGE TOWN : Local government enforcement officers have drawn flak after a video showing them fining stallholders at a trade fair in Bukit Mertajam went viral. In a now-deleted TikTok video shared by the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP), enforcement officers were seen issuing compound notices to traders selling sarees and other Indian-themed goods. The officers were also heard describing the event, held earlier this month, as illegal. The traders at the concourse of the supermarket were told that they were in violation of two rules: they were not Penang residents, and they were selling 'Indian-themed items' outside the allowed period. 'I have an SSM licence, and I am a Malaysian, and you're saying I can't do business?' one shocked trader was heard asking, referring to the Companies Commission of Malaysia. The video then showed the MBSP officers speaking to the Kuala Lumpur-based event organiser, who appeared equally confused. The officers explained that under a state policy, only Penang residents could sell 'Indian-related' items and hold fairs. Non-Penangites could only trade their wares from April 1 to June 30, or during the 30 days before Deepavali. 'All Malaysians are welcome to trade their wares from April to June. No problem,' one officer was heard saying. The organiser refused to comment fearing repercussions. The fair was held from July 9 to 13 and deemed a 'big success', with a South Indian soap star gracing its opening. Such Indian-related fairs are common across the peninsula, where cheap wares and textiles are sold at prices lower than brick and mortar stores. Former MBSP councillor P David Marshel asked if such a policy was legal, saying it may go against Article 8 of the Federal Constitution, which guarantees equal treatment for all citizens. He urged the Penang government to clarify whether the policy had been formally approved, and to cancel the compound notices issued. Batu Uban assemblyman A Kumaresan said such a policy may risk creating a perception that Penang is not open to fair business practices. 'Restricting events to certain months may not be the best way forward. This could dampen growth and limit healthy competition between local and outside traders,' he said in a statement. He said while the rule may have been aimed at protecting local businesses from unfair competition, a more equitable solution would be to manage, not block, participation. 'I urge the state to review this policy and seek a more balanced, fair and business-friendly approach that benefits all,' he said. Paris Court To Rule On Sulu Claim Annulment On Dec 9
KUALA LUMPUR, July 18 (Bernama) -- The Paris Court of Appeal has reserved its decision to Dec 9 on Malaysia's application to annul the USD14.9 billion final award in the arbitration case filed by individuals claiming to be heirs of the long-defunct Sultanate of Sulu. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, in a statement, said the decision followed a hearing on July 7, during which the court concluded its hearing on the merits for the annulment of the final award in the case. Azalina said during the hearing that the claimants had attempted to postpone the proceedings to enable them to respond to the written opinion of the Public Prosecutor of France. However, the court dismissed the request and proceeded with the hearing. 'In this context, Malaysia places its confidence in the Paris Court of Appeal's process and decision in bringing a definitive end to the so-called Sulu Claimants' illegal global enforcement efforts, similar to the positions adopted by the Spanish and Dutch courts,' Azalina said. The government has also reiterated its stance on the need for transparency in third-party litigation funding mechanisms to prevent their misuse against sovereign nations. 'Malaysia at the same time continues to advance its efforts to promote a global framework that places transparency at the centre of third-party litigation funding, ensuring that a mechanism intended to promote access to justice is not misused as an instrument of lawfare against sovereign states. 'International arbitration must be protected from attempts to extort sovereign states under the guise of arbitration claims,' Azalina said. She emphasised that the MADANI Government remained steadfast in defending Malaysia's sovereignty and the integrity of international arbitration.

Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul said his office has received a wide range of motions from the honourable Members of Parliament (MPs), indicating a packed and intense session ahead. 'So I call on the people on the ground, when the 13MP is tabled, they have to inform their MPs about what they want to be raised in Parliament. 'Tag their MPs (on social media) so that their voices can be heard. Don't wait until the MPs return to their constituencies to complain. Raise the issue while Parliament is in session,' he said after officiating the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI) at Taman Pekan Baru today. Johari said the sitting will probably be extended into the night to accommodate the packed schedule, beginning daily at 10am and possibly continuing until 10pm or 11pm. Johari noted that the tabling of the 13MP is particularly significant as Malaysia holds the Asean Chairmanship this year, and it offers an opportunity to showcase the country's resilience and progress amid global uncertainties. In another development, he urged the public to fully utilise services made available at NADI centres to improve their livelihoods and economic opportunities. 'It's a platform to gain knowledge not only academically but also across various fields. I encourage youth, especially, to take advantage of these centres to learn and engage with their communities,' he said.
