The founders of dynamic Kia Mau and Pacific Dance New Zealand Festivals

This month welcomes two contemporary indigenous performing arts festivals which have established themselves as cornerstones of the presentation of new work from Aotearoa and across the Pacific. Deeply embedded in the scene they are leaders in premiering exciting new works, developing our Pacific talent and bringing artists from across Te-Moana-a-kiwa together.
Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland has for 15 years hosted the Pacific Dance Festival. It's the work of the Pacific Islands Dance Fono Trust, who champion the growth and visibility of Pacific dance in Aotearoa. The festival opened last night at Māngere Arts Centre - Ngā Tohu o Uenuku,.and runs through till June 19.
In Pōneke, Wellington Kia Mau Festival is now 10 years old and this year has a diverse programme of 28 performing arts works. It opened last weekend and runs through until June 14.

What music can we make together with machines, plants and fungi?!

That is, when we - humans - take the time to stop, listen and respond? That's the question Pōneke artist and musician Kieran Monaghan has been asking with his ongoing project, In it he transforms the living data from plants and fungi into voltage, translated into music via a modular synthesizer. Long an experimental drummer with found sounds. Monaghan is exploring inter-species collaboration. Following residencies with the Audio Foundation and Toi Poneke, Monaghan holds the position of Visiting Scholar at Te Kōkī/New Zealand School of Music - Victoria University. and co-runs label Skirted Records with partner Chrissie Butler, who were for 23 years punk group Mr Sterile Assembly . have recently released a debut album GUEST , and are currently touring the country.

culture arts about 1 hour ago Banksy's street art and graffiti is some of the most recognisable and iconic images of the modern art world. Although his work started in the 90s in Bristol, Banksy's identity remains a mystery. Synonymous with public stunts and pop-up events, his art is also often perceived as free. But is it? The Art of Banksy has landed in Auckland - after touring around the world and brings together prints, sculptures and images of the aritsts' work from over three decades from collectors and those who've been gifted his art. Curator and producer Michel Boersma spoke to Culture 101 about what audiences will gain from the experience and discusses whether Banksy's art is 'free'.
