
Most truckers suffer hearing loss: Study
Published in the Jan–Feb 2025 issue of Noise & Health, the study was conducted by Anupam Mehrotra (AKTU), Sheo P. Shukla (Rajkiya Engineering College Banda), and Prof Manish K. Manar (KGMU).
The team tested the hearing of 200 male long-distance truck drivers from Lucknow using pure tone audiometry. Results showed 50.5% had hearing loss in their better ear. The right ear was more affected in 73.5% of cases (147 drivers), 14% (28) had loss in both ears, and 12.5% (25) in the left ear.
"This may be because the right ear is closer to the window while driving," said Prof Manar of KGMU's community medicine department.
At 4000 Hz—typically the first frequency affected by Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL)—abnormal thresholds were found in 84% of right ears.

"The average threshold was 32.61 dB in the right ear and 28.66 dB in the left—both above the normal range," Prof Manar added.
Risk factors included poor sleep, longer driving experience, and age. Drivers sleeping less than six hours or with over 10 years of experience had more damage. Those above 40 had age-related compounding effects. "Lifestyle habits like poor sleep and alcohol use increase vulnerability," said researcher Arvind K Shukla.
While past Indian studies focused on car or auto-rickshaw drivers, truckers—who endure prolonged noise—remain under-researched. "This is among the first major studies on hearing loss in Indian truck drivers," said Mehrotra. "We hope it encourages action from transport companies and health authorities."
The team recommended regular hearing check-ups, use of earplugs or noise-cancelling devices, awareness drives, and better working conditions to reduce fatigue. "Our truck drivers are the backbone of the economy," Mehrotra added. "Protecting their hearing is vital for their well-being and the nation's functioning."

Tesla Model Y takes aim at BYD Sealion 7 in India's electric SUV segment: Price, range, features and more compared
Tesla has officially entered the Indian automobile market with the launch of its Model Y SUV. The electric vehicle (EV) maker has also opened its first retail outlet in India, strategically located at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai. Bookings for the new Tesla Model Y are now open via the company's official website, with deliveries of the standard rear-wheel-drive (RWD) variant set to commence within this quarter. Deliveries for the Long Range rear-wheel-drive variant are scheduled to commence in October 2025. The Tesla Model Y enters a growing premium EV market in India, where it will compete with the likes of the BYD Sealion 7, Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Volvo's XC40 and C40 Recharge models. In India, the Tesla Model Y is being offered in two trims: the Standard rear-wheel-drive version at ₹ 59.89 lakh and the Long Range rear-wheel-drive variant at ₹ 67.89 lakh, both prices ex-showroom. "Misleading": Health Ministry On Warning Labels For Samosas, Jalebis
New Delhi: The Union Health Ministry on Tuesday termed reports claiming it has directed vendors to put warning labels on food items such as samosas, jalebis and laddos as "misleading, incorrect, and baseless". It clarified that its advisory on health messaging about hidden fats and excess sugar in various food items is not a directive for vendors to put warning labels on their products, and underlined that it does not target India's rich street food culture. The general advisory is a behavioural nudge to make people aware of hidden fats and excess sugar in all food products, and not specifically to any particular food product, the ministry said in a statement. The advisory mentions other messages promoting healthy food such as fruits, vegetables and low-fat options and making suggestions for people to opt for physical activity, such as the use of stairs and short exercises. The ministry had separately issued an advisory, which is an initiative towards making healthier choices at workplaces. It advises displaying boards in workplaces to raise awareness on the harmful consumption of hidden fats and excess sugar in various food items. These boards are meant to serve as daily reminders on fighting obesity, the burden of which is sharply rising in the country, the statement said. "The health ministry advisory does not direct warning labels on food products sold by vendors, and has not been selective towards Indian snacks. It does not target India's rich street food culture," it clarified. The initiative is part of the ministry's flagship initiatives under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases. Excessive consumption of oil and sugar is a key contributor to the rising rate of obesity, diabetes, hypertension and other lifestyle-related diseases. The ministry has urged all ministries and departments to install displays of boards mentioning the sugar and oil content in snacks such as samosa, kachori, pizza, burger, french fries, soft drinks, gulab jamun and vadapav to promote healthy lifestyles and combat obesity and non-communicable diseases. It has also called for printing health messages on all official stationery such as letterheads, envelopes, notepads, folders and publications to reinforce daily reminders on fighting obesity. While the oil board mentioned snacks such as French fries, burgers, pizza, samosa, pakodas and vadapav, the sugar board included items such as soft drinks, gulab jamun and chocolate pastries.
