Delays expected due to double lane closure on bridge

Rush hour drivers were expected to feel the brunt of worsened traffic on the Orwell Bridge near Ipswich after two lanes were shut at the same time. They were closed on the major route through Suffolk to allow for £6m repair works to continue on Monday. Widespread delays previously broke out when an eastbound carriageway was closed on Monday, 23 June, which was followed by a westbound lane on Saturday. Martin Fellows, from National Highways, warned motorists using the A14 to "allow extra time" for their journeys. While the lanes were shut, traffic was limited to 60mph on the eastbound side and 40mph for those travelling west while the contraflow system was in place. Work to replace 37-year-old joints on the bridge was expected to be completed by late August. It has been a point of concern for Dan Trent, owner of Dan's Coach Travel in Stowmarket. "It's causing delays to our customers, passengers, drivers - it's causing them stress that they don't need," he said. Mike Barrett, who runs a food charity in Ipswich, added the traffic was already increasing "mileage, delivery times, fuel costs" prior to the westbound closure. Queues had previously gone back as far as Sproughton and caused delays on the A12 at the Copdock Interchange. National Highways acknowledged the traffic issues but said the structural project was essential. Mr Fellows thanked drivers for their patience in the interim. "We remain confident that all works will be completed by mid to late August, as originally planned," he added. "The A14 will still be your best route whilst we are doing this work, so please stay on the A14, but allow extra time for your journey." Follow Suffolk news on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram and X. Smart Traffic Management to Save 900m Tons of Emissions Globally by 2030, But Security Must Scale with Adoption

BASINGSTOKE, United Kingdom, June 30, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A new study from Juniper Research, the foremost experts in IoT markets, has found the adoption of smart traffic management solutions will save up to 923 million metric tons (MMT) of CO2 by 2030. This is an increase of 151% on the 368 MMT CO2 savings forecast for this year. This substantial increase in CO2 saving represents 1.5% of 2030 global carbon emissions. Find out more: Smart Traffic Management Market 2025-2030, or download a free sample. Cybersecurity Remains a Key Concern To achieve these CO2 savings, Juniper Research believes it is essential security measures can scale alongside the growing number of sensors in smart traffic management solutions and the increasing volume of data generated. We have identified technologies specifically designed for high-end security in data-intensive and automated environments, such as data minimisation solutions and federated learning, as ideal for processing real-time information from smart traffic management solutions. Juniper Research finds the technologies that provide data anonymisation, particularly in the face of real-time decision making, will position smart traffic management vendors best to capitalise in a market expected to grow from $14.8 billion globally in 2025, to $32.7 billion in 2030. Integrating these technologies will enable vendors to analyse traffic data without compromising any personal data collected; enhancing public trust and reducing the risk of data breaches. Research author, Michelle Joynson, stated, 'As smart traffic management solutions continue to collect valuable personal data to optimise traffic flows, the threat of cyber-attacks is increasing. Smart traffic vendors must deploy robust security measures to ensure system reliability, continually enabling optimised traffic flows; leading to significant emission reductions and cost savings.' About the Research The research suite offers a comprehensive assessment of the smart traffic management market, including insightful market analysis and in-depth forecasts for 60+ countries. Two killed in sniper ambush as Idaho firefighters come under siege from rifle fire

Two firefighters were fatally shot in the US on Sunday after they were ambushed by sniper fire while responding to a blaze in Idaho caused by the shooter, authorities have said. A shelter-in-place order was lifted Sunday night after a tactical response team used cell phone data to 'hone in' on a wooded area where they found the suspect's body with a firearm nearby as flames rapidly approached, Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris said. Officials did not release his name, nor did they say what kind of gun was found. 'We do believe that the suspect started the fire, and we do believe that it was an ambush and it was intentional,' Norris said at a Sunday night news conference. 'These firefighters did not have a chance.' Sheriff's officials said crews responded to a fire at Canfield Mountain just north of Coeur d'Alene around 1:30 pm, and gunshots were reported about a half hour later. Investigators said the gunman acted alone. 'We believe that was the only shooter that was on that mountain at that time,' Norris said. Two were dead on arrival and the third was being treated for injuries, Anderson said. The wounded firefighter was 'fighting for his life' after surgery and was in stable condition, Norris said. The scene was sheer pandemonium as the brush fire burned and firefighters rushed to the scene only to come under heavy fire. First responders made urgent calls for help on their radios: 'Everybody's shot up here ... send law enforcement now,' according to one dispatch. Governor Brad Little said 'multiple' firefighting personnel were attacked. 'This is a heinous direct assault on our brave firefighters,' Little said on X. 'I ask all Idahoans to pray for them and their families as we wait to learn more.' Norris said it appeared the sniper was hiding in the rugged terrain and using a high-powered rifle. He said he instructed deputies to fire back.
