Asean looking forward to KL declaration on safe social media use
In a joint communique issued following the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting on Wednesday (July 9), the foreign ministers acknowledged the commitment of the Asean Ministers Responsible for Information (AMRI) in promoting the safe and responsible use of social media platforms.
They also recognised AMRI's efforts in enhancing cooperation to combat fake news and disinformation across the region, in line with Asean's broader goals of unity and mutual understanding.
The bloc also welcomed the adoption of the Bandar Seri Begawan Declaration to Reaffirm AMRI's Commitment to Strategic Progress in Media and Information, which aims to strengthen Asean's cohesion and mutual understanding through the evolving role of media.
The ministers noted the ongoing development of the Guidelines for Safe and Responsible Use of Social Media Platforms for Asean, which are intended to support a coordinated regional approach to digital engagement in line with Asean's shared values.
In addition, Asean acknowledged AMRI's efforts in formulating a successor Work Plan for Information and Media (2026-2035) and the Asean Communication Master Plan III (ACMP III) (2026-2030), both of which will align with the region's long-term vision under Asean 2045: Our Shared Future.

As for the frequency of his and several ministers' attendance at various ASEAN meetings and negotiations recently, Anwar said these were not merely symbolic but had led to concrete results, including Terengganu being selected as the hub for a new green hydrogen energy initiative. He said the project in Tasik Kenyir was highly significant as it aligned with the region's major agenda to implement the ASEAN Power Grid, which would connect cross-border electricity supply from Vietnam to Malaysia and Singapore through undersea cables. 'This energy production can only be realised through the cooperation of ASEAN, the Federal Government, and state governments. It will certainly position Malaysia as a major energy producer in the region,' he said. Anwar added that with the rapid emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) technology centres, which demand significantly higher energy and water capacities than typical industries, it was crucial for Malaysia to support and help realise the ASEAN Power Grid initiative. He also said Malaysia was increasingly respected on the global stage, as demonstrated by the extraordinary participation of major powers in recent ASEAN meetings, indicating confidence in the country's stability and economic potential. Anwar noted that while ASEAN meetings involved 10 member countries as well as Timor Leste, the attendance of major powers such as Japan, the United States, Russia, and Turkiye was a remarkable show of support for the platform. Anwar: I travel abroad to represent Malaysia, not for leisure
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has clarified that his frequent travels abroad are not for leisure, but to represent Malaysia and advance the country's interests on the global stage. Speaking about his recent 24-hour journey from Brazil, Anwar said he often faces gruelling schedules but remains committed to his duties. "You think I enjoy flying abroad? I represent Malaysia whenever I travel — it's not for leisure," he said. He said this at his speech at the launch of the Madani Rakyat Terengganu 2025 Programme in Kuala Terengganu today, which was posted on his Facebook page. The prime minister said he will be turning 78 next month and described his demanding itinerary upon his return from Brazil this week. He recalled arriving home at 3am and then opening the Asean conference at 9am on Wednesday, where he presented his keynote address at the opening ceremony of the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting, followed by meetings with Asean leaders. Anwar also highlighted the importance of his attendance at the BRICS summit in Brazil, a coalition of Global South nations aiming to strengthen trade ties outside the influence of major world powers. "Brazil is a big country. It granted access to the largest oil platform to Petronas. Why? Because they are friends with us. Who benefits? Petronas. Petronas profits, and the Malaysian people benefit," he said. The prime minister had earlier said that his official visits to Italy, France and Brazil met their intended objectives to reinforce bilateral ties, attract investments and boost Malaysia's trade relations. He said the visits went beyond investment and trade promotion, focusing also on strengthening government-to-government ties.
