Its minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said that among the suggestions received was a proposal for university students to travel during the day, instead of at night, to enhance safety.
Advertisement 'Some have suggested that university students and undergraduates should travel during the day rather than at night, to enhance safety,' he told the media after the 'Luncheon Talk with Editors' session, in conjunction with the Asean-Malaysia Chairmanship 2025, at his ministry, here, yesterday. Zambry also said that he had been informed of a separate accident involving an express bus, early yesterday morning, which reportedly had students from Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) among its passengers. 'I only received information about the accident this morning. Fortunately, there were no injuries,' he said. In the tragic incident early Monday morning, 15 UPSI students lost their lives when the bus they were traveling in overturned at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB), near Tasik Banding, Gerik. Meanwhile, media reported that 28 passengers, including 13 UMPSA students, survived after their express bus crashed into the rear of a trailer at KM161.5 of the East Coast Highway (LPT), eastbound, shortly after midnight Monday night. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Cash-strapped SPCA Sandakan appeals for funds again

Published on: Wednesday, July 02, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 02, 2025 By: Winnie Kasmir Text Size: Delays in neutering can result in over 100 new puppies each month, many of which will face starvation, disease or road accidents. - FMT pic for illustration only SANDAKAN: The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Sandakan has issued an urgent appeal to the public for financial support as it struggles to sustain its ongoing stray animal neutering programme. According to its Secretary, Voo Min Gin, out of an estimated 878 stray dogs, 133 have been successfully neutered to date, however, 745 dogs remain untreated. 'SPCA Sandakan is now facing a critical shortage of funds. Payments for upcoming veterinary procedures must be settled this week, and without immediate public donations, the program is at risk of stalling. 'Veterinarian Dr Randolf is scheduled to arrive in Sandakan on 1 July 2025 to resume the neutering efforts. 'However, after paying two urgent bills, the spay / neuter fund will be nearly depleted. 'This is a life-saving programme. Every dog we neuter today prevents dozens of homeless puppies tomorrow. We've built the system, what we need now is financial support to keep it going,' said Voo. The urgency is further compounded by the approaching monsoon season, which typically leads to increased breeding among stray animals. Delays in neutering can result in over 100 new puppies each month, many of which will face starvation, disease or road accidents. Members of the public who wish to support the cause can donate via bank transfer to SPCA Sandakan Maybank account number: 560166133482 (account name: Medication Account). Two Sabahans in book on Malaysia's top women

Published on: Wednesday, July 02, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 02, 2025 Text Size: From right: Adeline, Dr Jamilah, Wan Azizah and Patricia Yapp. Kota Kinabalu: Two prominent Sabahans have been recognised as among Malaysia's top achievers in a new book that explores how successful women balance career, marriage and motherhood. Former Sabah State Library Director cum and Malaysia's first female President of both the Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan Municipal Councils, Datuk Adeline Leong, joins Lt Colonel Patricia Yapp from Sandakan, the country's first female jet fighter pilot, as featured personalities in 'To Have It All' by Professor Puan Sri Paduka Dr Jamilah Ariffin. The book profiles 20 accomplished Malaysian women from diverse fields, including politics, academia, business, civil service, medicine, military and law enforcement. Notable figures include Federal Minister of Youth and Sports Hannah Yeoh, former High Court Judge Tan Sri Datuk Zainun Ali and Malaysia's first female Major General Datuk Major General Fadzlette Othman Merican. Author Prof Jamilah, a Development Studies expert from University of Malaya who has penned 17 books on women's development, brings unique insights from her academic work and community service. During her 17 years in Johor, she established 66 daycare centres for children with disabilities and training programmes for single mothers. The book addresses a pressing national concern Malaysia's declining birth rate, which has reportedly dropped to 1.6 children per woman well below the 2.1 replacement level needed to sustain population growth. Jamilah attributes this trend to changing life priorities, with motherhood becoming a choice rather than expectation, preferences for smaller families and rising infertility rates. 'To Have It All' offers practical guidance on managing work-life balance, stress management and the importance of family support systems. The author draws comparisons between successful Malaysian women and their counterparts in the United States, China and Hong Kong. The book targets a broad readership, including policymakers, educators, employers, researchers, parents and young women aspiring to excel in their careers while maintaining family life. Kota Kinabalu: The Sino-KDMR Association saw more than 10,000 members officially accepted into the Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA) as of March this year. It was a major milestone in their pursuit of greater recognition and support. Its President Datuk Johnny Goh expressed his gratitude, stating that the association celebrated its acceptance under the KDCA umbrella, strengthening its connection with the wider native community.
