Prasarana Champions Sustainable City Living Through TOD

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 (Bernama) -- As urban mobility becomes increasingly unsustainable amid growing populations and emissions, Prasarana Malaysia Bhd is rising to the challenge by focusing on transit-oriented development (TOD) — a model that clusters residential, commercial, and civic spaces within walking distance of public transport hubs.
Prasarana, the country's largest public transport operator, said TOD promotes high-density, walkable neighbourhoods with reduced car dependency, a vision it is driving through its subsidiary Prasarana Integrated Development Sdn Bhd (PRIDE), which focuses on delivering TOD projects.
'These are live developments reshaping the Klang Valley. Among them is Perla Ara Damansara, a mixed-use development adjacent to the light rail transit (LRT) station, blending affordable and mid-range residential units with retail, office suites, and a hotel.
'Another flagship is The Riveria City in Brickfields, near the Kuala Lumpur city centre, a mixed-use development built within the Monorail Depot and fully integrated with pedestrian flows and surrounding businesses,' it said in a statement.
Prasarana said each TOD site is shaped by principles of inclusivity, mobility, and environmental resilience, including walkability and access to essential services, with the aim of transforming transit stations into vibrant anchors of urban life that support homes, jobs, and retail activity within a unified ecosystem.
Through TOD, the company is also unlocking new value by leveraging station land, air rights, and commercial assets.
'Over the next five years, PRIDE aims to grow its commercial revenue through leasing, advertising, and joint development, diversifying income streams while contributing to broader goals of urban regeneration.
'Malaysia is not starting from scratch. It draws on global best practices, especially from Japan, where railway operators like JR East and JR West have long integrated transport with property, commerce, and services,' it added.
According to Prasarana, Malaysia is adapting this approach to its own urban context, aligning TOD with national priorities such as the National Transport Policy, the 12th Malaysia Plan, and broader sustainability frameworks.

Fadillah said bilateral trade between the two countries remained modest in 2024, despite Russia's large economy. Russia ranked as Malaysia's ninth-largest trading partner among European nations this year, with total trade reaching RM11.46 billion (US$2.48 billion). Malaysia's key exports to Russia include electrical and electronic products, machinery, equipment and parts, as well as processed food. 'I invited Russian companies to invest in Malaysia and take advantage of the government's incentives in strategic sectors such as aerospace, agrotechnology, energy, ICT (information and communications technology), the digital economy, Islamic finance and the halal industry,' the Deputy Prime Minister said. He was speaking at a press conference at the end of his four-day working visit to Russia late last night. Fadillah, who is also the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, called for cooperation in agriculture and food security, and proposed joint research and development in fertiliser and pesticide technologies, agro-engineering and food technology. 'I discussed collaboration in higher education and conveyed appreciation to the Russian government for its scholarships to Malaysian students. 'I also proposed that these scholarships be extended to emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, big data and information science, in line with current industrial transformation,' he said. On tourism, Fadillah said Malaysia welcomed a proposal for direct flights between the two countries, which is expected to be finalised soon. However, he noted that Russia had raised concerns over financial transactions, which had to some extent hampered the growth of bilateral trade. He gave an assurance that the Malaysian government, through the relevant agencies, including Bank Negara Malaysia, would continue to facilitate smooth financial transactions between both sides. 'I will present the outcomes of my discussions with Russian counterparts to the Cabinet upon my return to Malaysia. Losses Incurred By Pineapple Farmers Dropped To RM1.02 Mln Last Year
JOHOR BAHRU, June 28 (Bernama) -- Losses incurred by pineapple farmers nationwide due to unpredictable weather and natural disasters dropped significantly from RM7 million in 2021 to RM1.02 million last year. Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup said the decline was partly attributed to research outcomes, infrastructure development and innovations by the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM). 'For example, in 2021, the recorded losses amounted to RM7 million, which then dropped to RM2 million in 2022, RM1.8 million in 2023 and RM1.02 million last year,' he told a press conference after launching the 2025 International Pineapple Industry Seminar here today.

Five Malaysians Choose To Stay In Iran
REMBAU, June 28 (Bernama) -- Only five Malaysians, comprising four students and a businessman, have opted to stay in Iran, said Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. He said they had signed a letter of undertaking to remain in Iran despite the government's earlier call for all Malaysians to leave the country amid escalating conflict. 'The evacuation process for Malaysians in Iran has been completed, with all having returned home on June 21. I have ordered all Malaysians in Iran to return, most of whom are in Tehran. However, four students are still staying there, namely three in Qom and one in Esfahan, while the other is a businessman. 'They have signed a letter of undertaking and expressed their gratitude to the Malaysian government and Wisma Putra, stating that they have chosen to stay (in Iran)...there are not many Malaysians in Iran,' he told reporters after officiating the 52nd General Meeting of the Kaum Ibu Penajes Cooperative here today. The media previously reported that 24 individuals, including Malaysians, who were in Iran, had safely arrived at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) aboard Malaysia Airlines flight MH781. The group comprised 17 Malaysians, six Iranian dependents of Malaysian citizens, and one Singaporean national. Meanwhile, Mohamad said Malaysia would forge collaboration with Indonesia to explore economic development in the maritime border area between Malaysia and Indonesia in Ambalat. He said that although the area involved was still under negotiation between the two countries, Malaysia did not want this resource-rich region to become a liability or be neglected. 'Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto came close to reaching an agreement. The technical committee is now tasked with promptly identifying ways to finalise the deal so both countries can benefit from the natural resources there.
