Brady Singer, Reds look to respond to chaotic loss vs. Braves
In the opener Thursday night, the Braves scored eight runs in the top of the eighth inning, only to have the Reds open the bottom of the eighth with eight straight hits, a streak that included a pair of three-run home runs, to tie the game 11-11.
It was the third time in major league history that each team scored at least eight runs in the same inning.
The Braves managed to get the game to extra innings, where Marcell Ozuna drove home Matt Olson with a sacrifice fly in the 10th for a 12-11 win.
"I've never seen anything like that," Ozuna said. "I was like, 'Oh my God.'"
It was the second massive collapse by the Braves' bullpen this season. On June 5, Atlanta blew a 10-4, ninth-inning lead at home and lost 11-10 to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Ozzie Albies went 4-for-6 and drove in two runs on Thursday for the Braves, who erased an early 3-0 hole and broke open a 3-3 game with their eight-run eighth, when they sent 13 batters to the plate.
It was an up-and-down day for new Reds third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes, acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday. Hayes committed a key two-run error in the sixth inning that allowed the Braves to tie the game. He then belted a three-run homer in the eighth to ignite Cincinnati's comeback.
"It was a little bit of everything in the game today," Hayes said. "I missed that ball. I wished I could have that one back. I feel like we were able to battle back, tie that game back up and were able to get the winning run up at the plate. But yeah, it was a pretty crazy day. I was able to put a good swing on the ball, but ultimately I would like to get the win."
Atlanta has won four of the five meetings this season with Cincinnati, clinching the season series for the fourth time in five years.
The Friday game is set for the unusual starting time of 12:40 p.m. ET as both teams will leave immediately after for Bristol, Tenn., and the MLB Speedway Classic on Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway. The major league attendance record will be set, as more than 85,000 tickets have been sold.
The Reds send will Brady Singer (8-8, 4.60 ERA) to the mound on Friday. Against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, the right-hander earned the 2-1 win, allowing just one run on three hits over 7 1/3 innings, his longest outing of the season. He struck out eight and walked one.
It marked his sixth start of the season in which he allowed three hits or fewer and his eighth quality start in 21 outings.
Singer is 0-3 with a 7.41 ERA in three career starts against the Braves. He lost 4-0 in Atlanta on May 5 when he permitted four runs on seven hits in six innings.
The Braves will counter with right-hander Bryce Elder (4-7, 6.29 ERA). He has struggled in his past seven starts, going 2-4 with a 10.50 ERA. On Sunday at Texas, he allowed eight runs on six hits in 2 2/3 innings during an 8-1 loss to the Rangers. He fanned three and walked four.
Elder will be making his second career start against the Reds. He threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings on April 10, 2023, striking out seven, but did not record a decision.

Darwin Nunez next club odds slashed as team makes move for Liverpool striker
The bookmakers expect Darwin Nunez to make a summer move to Saudi Arabia, with Al Hilal making a move in their pursuit of the Liverpool striker. The Uruguayan is available for transfer as the Reds significantly revamp their forward line after winning the Premier League title. Hugo Ekitike has arrived from Eintracht Frankfurt and Florian Wirtz has been brought in from Bayer Leverkusen, while Liverpool continue to be linked with the likes of Newcastle's Alexander Isak and Real Madrid's Rodrygo. Luis Diaz has left for Bayern Munich and of course the club lost Diogo Jota in tragic circumstances due to his shocking death last month. Nunez has been linked with a move away from Anfield all summer after a disappointing season on a personal level, despite the team's success under Arne Slot. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. The 26-year-old scored just five Premier League goals in 30 appearances, netting seven times in 47 outings across all competitions. The Reds are happy to let him go, but want a significant return on the initial £64m they paid Benfica for him in 2022. Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal have made a move, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reporting that they have 'presented their project and plan to Darwin Nunez in recent days.' A deal is far from done, with negotiations still to take place between the clubs and the player. While a number of players have been tempted to the Saudi Pro League, plenty more have also decided they would prefer to continue their career in Europe, turning down the vast riches on offer in Saudi Arabia. 4/5 Any Saudi Arabian team3/1 AC Milan4/1 Liverpool9/1 Juventus 10/1 Newcastle Odds courtesy of bet365 Nunez may well have an option to make a big move within Europe, with AC Milan also interested in signing him this summer. Italian transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio reports that the Uruguayan is AC Milan's first choice as they look for a new striker this summer and they have held talks with him already. The Serie A side will not be able to compete with Al Hilal on a transfer fee or wages, but will hope to appeal to Nunez by offering a higher level of competition. There is yet to be a bid from any side, with Napoli and Juventus also linked with a move for him this summer but their interest seemingly fading. It was a difficult season for the striker under Slot, with the manager criticising his work rate in February after back-to-back performances that disappointed the Dutchman. More Trending 'I helped him by saying you can miss a chance,' Slot told a press conference in February after Nunez made substitute appearances against Wolves and Aston Villa, missing a glaring opportunity in the latter. 'I wasn't only hard on him. But for the second time in a row I wasn't happy with his work effort, against Wolves and against Villa. 'I can't accept if a player doesn't give everything. That is clear. I can accept it once, but twice was a bit too much. That's why I addressed it. 'If you miss a chance, you need to be fighting for the team. I'm not saying he didn't do that at all, but it wasn't the usual Darwin, the one that is loved by the fans. That is mainly because he always works so hard.' Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel sends warning to Tua Tagovailoa after Donald Trump called out NFL quarterback
Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel joked that Tua Tagovailoa has been given an 'executive order' to avoid getting hurt after Donald Trump told the quarterback he 'has got to stay healthy'. The 27-year-old started only 11 games last season amid concerns over his health after several nasty concussions. There were fears that Tagovailoa might have to call time on his career but he is back and preparing to lead the Dolphins into the 2025 campaign. On Thursday, president Trump namechecked the quarterback at the White House. Trump butchered the pronunciation of Tagovailoa but said he 'has really been fantastic.' 'When he's not injured, he's great. He's got to stay healthy. But he's a great guy,' the president said. On Saturday, McDaniel addressed Trump's comments during Dolphins training camp, telling NFL Network: 'If I was concerned about how serious he was taking his part in staying healthy, I think he got an executive order last night to stay healthy, if I'm not mistaken.' He then praised his quarterback, adding: 'It's been cool to watch him really evolve into who he is on the national stage but more so, really in his own skin, be the true leader of the team. 'It's real and authentic and all he's done is - in a ton of noise - focus on the right stuff. So there's a lot of things that go into staying healthy but first and foremost you have to front-end prioritize and really acknowledge what you mean to the team. 'And, like in years past, he lives and embraces "control-ables" and is not afraid of any work. So guys respond to him.' The president, 79, hosted multiple professional athletes, including golfer Bryson DeChambeau and Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker, at the White House Thursday for an executive order signing that will reestablish the Presidential Fitness Test. A number of sports stars will form a newly-created council of to help with the reinstatement of the test, including Tagovailoa as well as Super Bowl winner Saquon Barkley. But Trump's attempt at praising the Dolphins passer was almost derailed when the president tripped over his last name, which is pronounced 'Tun-go-val-oa.' The Commander-in-Chief sounded out the last name of the signal caller, who is of Samoan descent, before butchering it anyway and pronouncing it 'Ta-go-valiah.' The Alabama product appears to be close to the president's extended family. Earlier this year, Tagovailoa and his former Dolphins teammate Braxton Berrios spent time with First Daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner. Ivanka, the eldest daughter of president Trump, shared photos of her family hanging out with the NFL stars, which included her son passing the pigskin around and playing chess with Tagovailoa.
