Anwar dismisses Dr Mahathir's demand over Batu Puteh dispute
As reported by the New Straits Times, Anwar, when approached by reporters after the Finance Ministry's (MOF) monthly assembly, simply replied: 'Let it be.'
Dr Mahathir had earlier rejected what he called 'immunity' granted to him, insisting that he should be brought to court if he committed any wrongdoing.
He also accused Anwar of pre-judging the case and challenged the government to prove its claims in court.
Previously, Anwar said the Cabinet had decided not to take legal action due to Dr Mahathir's advanced age.
However, he maintained that Dr Mahathir was responsible for Malaysia's withdrawal from its sovereignty claim over Batu Puteh in 2018.
In December 2024, the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on Batu Puteh, Middle Rocks and South Ledge recommended a criminal probe into Dr Mahathir's role.
The 271-page declassified report, tabled in Parliament, concluded that there was a case to investigate under the Penal Code.
The RCI, chaired by former Chief Justice Tun Md Raus Sharif, was tasked with examining how the territorial claims were managed.
The controversy stems from the government's 2018 decision to withdraw its application to review the International Court of Justice's (ICJ) ruling on the island's sovereignty.

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A 55-year-old retired clerk lost RM600,000 after falling victim to an online investment scam. The woman, from Bukit Minyak, was lured by a Facebook advertisement in May promising high returns. Instead, she was asked for more payments as a withdrawal condition. Mohd Alwi confirmed the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. Kajang student pleads guilty to punching teacher in viral case
KAJANG: A 14-year-old student pleaded guilty in court today to punching and injuring his teacher in an incident that went viral on social media. The Form One remove class student admitted to the charge before Magistrate Fatin Dayana Jalil at the Magistrates' Court here. The case was heard in chambers due to the accused being a minor. The teenager was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code for intentionally causing hurt to a 29-year-old male teacher at a secondary school on July 28. If convicted, he faces up to one year in jail, a fine of RM2,000, or both. The court deferred sentencing to September 11, pending a social report from the Social Welfare Department. The student's lawyer, S Priyalatha, requested lower bail, citing his age and school status. However, deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Syafiq Mohd Zulbahrin proposed RM5,000 bail, noting the offence's severity and its viral spread online. 'The court allowed bail at RM1,000 with one surety,' said Priyalatha. The student's parents were present during the proceedings. The incident gained attention after a video showed the student allegedly assaulting his teacher.

Medical practitioner loses RM8.7 mln in online investment scam
JOHOR BAHRU: A 53-year-old medical practitioner lost her life savings of RM8.7 million after being deceived by an online investment scam offering unrealistic stock trading profits. Johor Bahru Selatan deputy police chief Supt Azrul Hisham Mohd Shaffei revealed that the victim encountered the fraudulent scheme through a social media advertisement in April. The scammer enticed her with promises of high returns, leading her to engage in further discussions. 'The suspect offered returns of up to 520 percent on her investment, convincing her to transfer RM8.7 million into multiple bank accounts between May and July,' he said. Despite the substantial investment, the victim was later informed she had only earned RM6,033 in returns. The fraudster then pressured her into paying an additional RM500,000 as a 'deposit' to withdraw her funds. Azrul Hisham added that the victim realised she had been scammed after receiving threats that her account would be frozen. She filed a police report yesterday, and authorities are investigating the case under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. - Bernama
